Israel Spied on Iran Nuclear Talks With U.S. - 3/24/2015 12:41:46 PM

Status: offline 		Soon after the U.S. and other major powers entered negotiations last year to curtail Iran’s nuclear program, senior White House officials learned Israel was spying on the closed-door talks.

The spying operation was part of a broader campaign by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to penetrate the negotiations and then help build a case against the emerging terms of the deal, current and former U.S. officials said. In addition to eavesdropping, Israel acquired information from confidential U.S. briefings, informants and diplomatic contacts in Europe, the officials said.

The espionage didn’t upset the White House as much as Israel’s sharing of inside information with U.S. lawmakers and others to drain support from a high-stakes deal intended to limit Iran’s nuclear program, current and former officials said.

“It is one thing for the U.S. and Israel to spy on each other. It is another thing for Israel to steal U.S. secrets and play them back to U.S. legislators to undermine U.S. diplomacy,” said a senior U.S. official briefed on the matter said.


Israeli officials denied spying directly on U.S. negotiators and said they received their information through other means, including close surveillance of Iranian leaders receiving the latest U.S. and European offers. European officials, particularly the French, also have been more transparent with Israel about the closed-door discussions than the Americans, Israeli and U.S. officials said.

Status: offline 		Why then could not Obama be open... he should have kept congress informed... why the hell should the congress need to get information from Israel? Hell why should not we all be informed as the negotiations proceed? It seems to me this would add support.

Status: offline 		If we know... and the world knows... what is being said by whom then in the end there could be support for whatever action we take. The world will know we tried peaceful reasonable negotiations and if they fail they will know who is at fault.

I understand your point but it is the wrong point... it should never have happened because congress should be informed and in agreement as to the particulars of the agreement before we even went into negotiations.

Fuck dumb ass... I could not care less about him... he is not important ... what is... a united front... or at least a well informed one. What good does it do to negotiate an agreement between the minority of our government? I'll tell you Iran understands this... no wonder they are in no hurry for an agreement... they understand it would be useless.

Status: offline 		If he did then why be upset if Israel told them what they already knew?... And DC if they did know would they have sent the letter then?... No common sense says they did not know what was going on and Obama kept if from them because he knew they would not agree.

I think what they did is treason... that is not my point... what is ...all the dumb ass secrecy and political intrigue with something this important... how could we screw it up more!

I would not dream of negotiating a treaty without the support of congress... If support could not be found then he should not be negotiating a treaty without power and integrity ... our actions as a country are disgraceful.

Yeah there is,talks of this magnitude are delicate ,they must be conducted with one voice.Premature speculation can kill the talks before they bear fruit.
There are also interested parties with a vested interest in the failure of these talks....we just saw 47 members of Congress put their collective feet in their mouth by a public letter....imagine giving all of these folks input as you negotiate.
Instant failure .

Not only that there should be nothing delicate...why...Is there something in the agreement that the American people would be against?... Well if there is then we should not have an agreement.
