Erasing evidence, although a routine matter for the Secret Service, is just wrong. Who would have thought that you have to secure the vedio within 72 hrs or the secret service will destroy it. I thought it would have fallen in line with other government records and be kept. I wonder how long this policy has been in effect and what impact it has on other government records.

FOIA appears to be in danger of the political process as well.

MercTech -> RE: Secret Service Flap (3/19/2015 3:08:32 AM)

Don't ask
Don't tell
Those are not the Droids you were looking for. Move along...
Whoops, Mr. Nixon, the secretary accidentally erased some of your tapes...

Yep, feeling snarky on this subject.

KenDckey -> RE: Secret Service Flap (3/19/2015 4:09:47 AM)

Coverups are never good. I was pointing fingers at the Secret Service and others for records destruction and hiding. Not at any one administration. Does it matter who does it? No Does it matter that it was done? Yes

What's particularly wicked is that the incident wasn't reported until 5 days later, which, if my calculator is to be trusted, is more than 72 hours after the incident. I'm sure there wasn't any planning going on there. [8|]

Aylee -> RE: Secret Service Flap (3/19/2015 4:24:25 PM)

Has there been any GOOD news about the Secret Service in the last several years?

MrRodgers -> RE: Secret Service Flap (3/19/2015 5:13:00 PM)

I have a problem with all of it. It seems to be the culture of Wash., since at least Nixon.

The culture of Washington doing whatever the hell it wants. From Nixon on.....

From trading with terrorist nations, to funding illegal wars, to killing 3000 people to simply apprehend a drug dealer and while on CIA payroll, to lying the US into wars to expanding drones warfare with their collateral murder, even down to this outright incompetence and [its] cover-up.

This whole culture has made Washington corruption a very bipartisan and ongoing affair and it's taking over and as pervasive in society now too with wall street, sports, gambling, local socialism for the rich, tax giveaways and exemptions. When will all of THAT stop ?

I think that there hasn't been a lot of news (even though it's mostly not good, or even, bad news) is, in and of itself, good news.

That's one of those things that you'd much rather not hear any news about, imo.

The Secret Service is entrusted with fighting financial crime? I did not know that. I thought they were security for elected officials (and their families).

bounty44 -> RE: Secret Service Flap (3/20/2015 4:04:42 AM)

yes, for some reason they are a part of the treasury department. I first learned that when i was working to catch a thief who had bought an expensive plane ticket on my debit card.

if you read david Baldacci, his books (government thriller types) have a strong secret service component.

KenDckey -> RE: Secret Service Flap (3/20/2015 5:30:37 AM)

If I remember right fighting crime was before Presidential detail.

The President hasn't been shot.....the First Lady seems safe,as do the first children....so yeah,I think there has been good news.
Of course good news often equals no news.
Do any of us have any idea what actual potential threats have been neutralized ?
I think it is institutional policy that demands that those things not be discussed ....granted they seem to be stubbing their collective toes a lot lately.....but given the vitriol the election of this particular President engendered his serving out his term and shaking his successors hand in Jan 2017 will indeed be good news.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Secret Service is to ensure the security of our President, our Vice President, their families, the White House, the Vice President’s Residence, national and visiting world leaders, former Presidents, and events of national significance. The Secret Service also protects the integrity of our currency and investigates crimes against our national financial system committed by criminals around the world and in cyberspace.

from:
http://www.secretservice.gov/mission.shtml

If I remember correctly: The Secret Service was formed after the Civil War by Ulysses Grant to prevent another presidential assassination.

Yes! The one that I am most familiar with that they deal with is counterfeiting.

dcnovice -> RE: Secret Service Flap (3/20/2015 4:42:13 PM)

FR

The Secret Service Division was created on July 5, 1865 in Washington, D.C., to suppress counterfeit currency. Chief William P. Wood was sworn in by Secretary of the Treasury Hugh McCulloch.

Presidential protection, originally on an informal part-time basis, didn't start until 1894.

slvemike4u -> RE: Secret Service Flap (3/20/2015 5:49:03 PM)

If McKinley was shot,as I recall,in 1901 what was the impetus for the formation of the protection detail ?
I mean hell,Lincoln had been dead since 1865,I know Washington moves slow....but that's glacial.

President's are NOT kings. There was not a need seen for a Praetorian Guard.

I want to say that between Lincoln and McKinley, the Pinkertons did some protection.

But yeah, all the motorcades and entourage and hands off stuff. . . that is all fairly recent.

slvemike4u -> RE: Secret Service Flap (3/20/2015 7:59:05 PM)

I'm not sure how we got from a protection detail to Praetorian Guards,but whatever.
The other thing I would ask is......Despite our not agreeing on all that much were you really under the impression that I didn't know President's weren't kings....so much so that you felt the need
to put "not" in caps.
I assure you I passed all my American History and civics courses

Awww. You are going to play at being obtuse again.

At least I hope it is something that you play at.
