Interestingly enough our House used to be his comedy partner in Ye Old Jolly England-o.

Laurie and Fry was a bit of a knee slapper, it was. Sort of like Laurel and Laurel (No Hardy for a straight man).

I love Stephen Fry always have, grew into adult hood with him and hugh laurie:) My daughter is in the UK watching re runs of all the 80s comedies, she is a huge fan of QI,
There is so much more he could have said to make his point, I wonder how much was cut......

never youtubed Hawkins before, I sense a wealth of comedy/facepalms etc to be had mainly at the expense of believers, all be it mainly the mouth breathing variety

Fry went to visit Laurie in the US a while ago when Laurie was still filming House. Laurie spoke in his House accent throughout the visit. Actors can be ... a little weird.

Ask your erstwhile Colonel Washington, or Sam Adams and them blokes.

I saw a movie some years ago, after he was on House and in the movie the airplane went down like in a desert, and some ended up eating each other, and he was full of the Queen's slang.

Must not have wanted to break character, so that cuz..........for some time, I could have sworn he was real American.

Same with Jax on Sons of Anarchy. English (with the exception of Michael Caine) do pretty good American accent. The same cannot be said for the other way 'round usually. Though Depp does a pretty good Keith Richards.

Now Jack Thompson (admittedly Ozzie) does a real good American accent nowadays, mostly southerners.

Heh. I should imagine that Michael Caine's US accent is up there with Dick Van Dyke's cockney in 'Mary Poppins'. I *know* I'd wince. ;-)

Entirely right. Blackadder in it's day (80's) was top class comedy. Remember rushing home from playing snooker to make sure I didn't miss it. Two of the best sketches of all time are Percy when he thought he'd made gold and the other when they attempted to sail round the world and got as far as Southampton with Captain Rum drinking his own piss before he got out of the dock. A very middle-class bias to that programme if you watch closely enough. Mr Bean is an embarrassment.
