Other than the Firefly parts, how is all the material NOT on the P&R board?

Yeah, I agree, Firefly is one of those shows (like Jericho) that was not explained in the right order. It was under funded, had a really good cast and crew. A story that was original but played to some past references to things. The episodes were great to watch, its the withdrawal that none more will be made that is the worst.

So if fans of Firefly were ever to put the cash together, could make such a production. Or a couple rich fans....

Like I said, not going to happen. Fox owns the rights, so in order to use the story, characters, or anything really, you need to buy it from them. And they aren't selling at any price. Serenity was pretty much the only compromise they made, after that, the subject was closed. Even Joss stopped asking after a while, and that is saying a lot

Actually, Fox routinely drops hints that they might be interested in a Firefly reboot, with the original cast and writing team.

Since the deaths of Wash and Book, it would have to be a reboot.

Or it could be an age thing, as the vets are (mostly) a bit older?

Well I'm old enough to be a vet but being where I am I wasn't conscripted, so I wasn't.

I'm a Whovian but not a Firefly fanatic.
It was Ok, but not great IMHO.

You will find that many vets weren't drafted.
At least in this country.

Joss has said he will never ever work with Fox again after Dollhouse, they did exactly what they did to Firefly to Dollhouse after explicitly promising not to (showing the series out of order). Since Fox has also refused to sell anyone the rights to Firefly that kills any hope of a new series or even a sequel movie.

jlf1961 -> RE: Browncoats UNITE (4/16/2014 2:58:13 PM)

Well, FOX just sent out a cease and desist order to moms and grandmothers who are making Jane hats on the grounds of copyright infringement.

In fact, FOX seems to be going out of its way to piss off as many fans of as many shows as they can.

There was a fan page that was taking pledges to help Nathan buy the rights to Firefly, but Whedon said he could not support such an effort.

The rumor mill is that FOX is willing to sell the rights to Firefly and other franchises, but at prices that would bankrupt anyone buying them. This includes other franchises that they seem to have locked up.

All this means is there are some big name talents who refuse to work for FOX except for fees that would bankrupt the network.

I agree but if they are holding it that close to the vest, they have something planned for the future for their own buck.

Petitions failed, fan outcry failed.

We have been ignored too long!

It is time to form a paramilitary political action committee to force congress to do the following:

1) Return Firefly to the prime time lineup with a guaranteed 20 year run, which will consist of the 20 new seasons, and no reruns for 1040 weeks

2) A federal agency that will take ideas from sci fi and research the possibility of developing them into viable technology. Some of us want replicants and replicators.

Secondary demands:

Healthcare reform that makes sense, not some convoluted mess like the Affordable Care Act.

A Balanced budget that covers the necessities, defense, infrastructure, education and getting people off welfare and to work.

Government incentives to bring jobs back to the US.

Now of course the most important demands are the primary, if we get the secondary demands, great, if not, oh well.

1: what's Firefly?
2: "we were promised jetpacks" best band name in a long time.

You do understand that when the browncoats take over the US, you will be sent to a reeducation camp?

Different armies, different vets, different preferences. I have read (some of) Mein Kampf but have also ploughed through Das Kapital..............I found them both equally boring. I guess that makes me a fence sitter huh ?

I'm just surprised that two of the SF writers you name are notorious lefties: given some of what you come out with in P&R, I'd have thought Heinlein and Pournelle would be more your speed than Asimov and Clarke.

I'm also a big fan of Roger Water's music, and he's fairly far off to the left of me politically. I don't have to agree with a point of view to enjoy a good, thought provoking story. I realize lefties tend to be a lot more narrow minded and intolerant, so that might be where the confuzzlement is coming from.

No, it's simply that all right-thinking people understand Firefly as one of the best TV shows of all time. Heck, even my wife who is utterly and absolutely NOT a sci-fi fan likes it.

CobaltRose -> RE: Browncoats UNITE (4/16/2014 11:03:53 PM)

Well, as for Firefly....."Better to die a hero, than live long enough to see yourself become the villian" who knows, if Firefly is picked back up, it might suck.

Yeah, I can't see Joss coming back to Firefly, he has moved on. And he really really hates Fox. Second, and be honest now, would you, or anyone for that matter, want to see the series redone, reboot or recast? The actors were fine, the stories were fine, hell leave them to the annals of history, and move on. Don't desecrate their memory by potentially mucking it up (anyone want to say "Total Recall:The remake"?)

The thing is Nathan Fillion does want to make more and between him and Joss that's quite a bit of Hollywood power. But like I said Joss has said he'll never work with Fox again and Fox has refused to sell the rights to Nathan or Joss so...

It is not that FOX wont sell, it is that FOX will sell the rights for a sum that is either going to bankrupt the buyer, or is about a couple million more than the buyer can pay.

TBS wanted to pick up Family Guy after FOX cancelled the series, Fox set the price so high that it is doubtful that TBS can even consider it.

FOX studios is more than willing to allow another network to pick up the show, but since Joss will not work with FOX again...

Basically FOX is willing to do with all of its franchises as it did with Futurama.

Of course, FOX studios are reaching a point where no writers or actors want to work with them because of the bullshit.

Of course, if there were a bank error in my favor to the tune of 75 billion dollars, I could buy the studio outright.

I dont see that happening, so there is plan B.

Plan B, psychological warfare with a certain conservative leaning Collarme member doing the planning and setting up the program.

In the television/movie biz, this is not wanting to sell, heh. Fox knows full well the value of all its intellectual properties. By setting the price at ridiculous numbers, they essentially make it a non sale. Thus keeping each in their pocket for some future deal, or out of another's pocket down the line. Do you really think Fox would ever want someone else making money off their stuff?

smileforme50 -> RE: Browncoats UNITE (4/17/2014 4:31:33 PM)

Really cool tidbit.....right after the show was cancelled I discovered that I work with Sean Maher's sister. My ex bf was a HUGE Firefly fan....so for Christmas she got me an autographed poster and the canvas back to Sean's "director's chair" from when they made the movie "Serenity".

Wasn't part of the point of making Serenity (and killing off the two best characters) Whedon making sure that Fox couldn't possibly try to do anything else with the intellectual property without him and the co creator?
(It's actually really annoying I can never remember his name, as he wrote the best two or three episodes...)

In the digital comic series, Zoey is in a certain condition which makes me go "YEA!". You can get the digital series on Dark Horse Comics (I just need to remember my user name and PW).
