Climate science deniers react to the study with cyber bullying and trolling. Link to the study at the bottom of the article.

Recursive Fury goes recurrent

Some 18 months ago I published a paper with colleagues Oberauer and Gignac that reported a survey of visitors to climate blogs which established a small, but significant, association between the endorsement of conspiracy theories and the rejection of several scientific propositions, including the fact that the earth is warming from greenhouse gases. The effects reported in that paper have since been replicated with a representative sample of Americans. No scholarly critique of either paper has been submitted for peer review to any journal to date.

Publication of the first paper (now known as LOG12) engendered a sustained and ongoing attack on the research and my work in general. Most of these attacks have been pursued by defamation on the internet, but they have also involved activities beneath the surface hidden from public view. I have already written about this Subterranean War on Science.

The strategies employed in those attacks follow a common playbook, regardless of which scientific proposition is being denied and regardless of who the targeted scientists are: There is cyber-bullying and public abuse by “trolling” (which recent research has linked to sadism); there is harassment by vexatious freedom-of-information (FOI) requests; there are the complaints to academic institutions; legal threats; and perhaps most troubling, there is the intimidation of journal editors and publishers who are acting on manuscripts that are considered inconvenient.

Together with colleagues Cook, Oberauer, and Marriott, I also published another paper last year, entitled Recursive Fury, in the online Journal Frontiers. This article reported a narrative analysis of the blogosphere’s response to publication of LOG12. The blogosphere’s response bore a striking resemblance to the very topic of LOG12: our finding that rejection of climate science is associated with conspiratorial thinking triggered elements of conspiratorial discourse among those who sought to deny that denial of climate science involves a measure of conspiratorial thinking:

So this is a new thing for people? That there exist people who are ignorant and foolish, doing anything and everything to destroy knowledge in the hopes they will not be forced to actually do real work, and learn it? Sounds like those sports types in American colleges and universities with GPAs lower than 0.1, obtaining degrees because they placed in some major league sports arena (i.e. football, basketball, hockey, etc.). They make up part of the 'low information voter' in this country.

Not at all surprised really. The ignorant have always feared those facts that contradict their belief system.

The more Global Warmers slander people, the more crazed and wild-eyed their position looks. Nobody has forgotten all the failed predictions, or the outright lies. As a foot-in-mouth blogger over at Climate Nuremburg puts it:

It’s all well and good for the science to tell us global warming is a bigger threat than Fascism was, but Joe Q. Flyover doesn’t understand science. He wants evidence.

Gee, ya think? Fucking crazy, ain't it?

Aw, come on K. Those scientists asked about their own papers are just "ignorant and foolish". [:D][;)][8D]

So who is wild eyed and crazy?

So...wait a minute, we're not supposed to point out how insane Deniers are and that we should just "go with the flow"? So if someone says 2+2=203 I shouldn't correct him because he might get upset? Man, deniers got some pretty thin skin if being corrected is such a big issue for them [8|]

Go with the flow? Absolutely not, and you'll note that deniers, what I think of as skeptics, are not going with the warmers flow. Now, do you have anything to say about the "97% Study Falsely Classifies Scientists' Papers, according to the scientists that published them"? they're not exactly going with the flow either.

Tkman117 -> RE: Study shows climate science deniers associated with conspiratorial thinking in general (4/12/2014 8:30:42 AM)

You clearly need to go back to school and learn to read, I meant going with the flow as in not correcting deniers on their absurd opinions on climate sciences [8|]

I suppose that's an improvement. Until now, there hasn't been evidence of any kind of thinking taking place in the science deniers.

Baby steps.

I realize there are some numbnuts who don't think the climate is changing (somebody posted a list of them once) but, there are unresolved issues. How much? How fast? What is really going on? And not least of all, would preparing for the effects be more time and cost-effective than trying to stop it. Suppressing anomalous data in order to further an agenda, however well intended, isn't science. It's fraud.

Bad science happens -- it's the publish or perish thing, added to normal human ego.

The 97% study is a joke of a meta-study, as it sets out to establish a point, not to investigate, and even as a meta-study, it measures not evidence and methodology, but conclusions and speculations. There's nothing scientific about it, and that happens frequently in academia.

But a bad study (or even several) doesn't mean there's no evidence and no good science; it means, like with all studies, we need to look at the data and methodology, not simply the conclusions. I agree that speculation is the bane of science in many areas, including this one. I also agree data get exaggerated when the egos and views of the researchers (or their funders, in the case of industrial studies) replace science by deciding what they intend to conclude, then try to construct the case, solid or not.

But to dismiss global warming as simply bad science ignores a lot of good data, and while I'm not fond of doomsday predictions, should be considered seriously.

30-40 years ago the settled science was the coming Ice age. The problem is that climate change is no longer a scientific issue, it has become a political issue.

Is the climate changing? Of course it is! Always has. Always will. If it never changed Chicago would be under a mile of ice.

The are eons of temperature fluctuations, some are very dramatic swings. You can look at any set of data and pick a portion that supports your position. Out of the millions of years worth of data, we have only captured this infintesimal, teeny, tiny, slice of it. And much of that data is suspect. Many "official" temperatures are recorded in urban heat islands.

And this is why people like you need to take a class on climate.
1) Proxies, we have many examples of indirect evidence pointing to the conditions of past climate, so by combining proxy data worldwide, we have a good example of what climate was like in the past.
2) Temperature fluctuations and cycles do happen in climate all the time, except for the fact that the three main climatic cycles that drive climate change on this planet happen over too large of a time scale for current climate change to be attributed to them.
3) Fluctuations in climate are usually in response to something. Changes in insolation, aerosols in the atmosphere, a dying off of vegetation which results in a change in albedo, increased weathering on newly exposed rock, changes in atmospheric chemistry by biological means, etc. There is always a cause and effect when it comes to climate. When you spew a heat trapping gas into the atmosphere in the millions of tons that we do yearly, you're going to see a gradual increase in global temperatures over time. Cause, please meet effect.

This is not political, this is fact, if you want to understand the facts then please ask and I'll give you some info to tide you over.

I personally don't think he does. The major problem when it comes to climate change and the conceptions it has on people is that it's complex. It's not as easy to simplify like evolution for example where "organisms change a little bit, and over time little changes become big changes." When people say global warming, they think that it'll be 29 instead of 25, but that's weather. They don't understand the difference between climate and weather, and they don't understand that it's not an increase in temperature as much as it is an increase in the amount of energy in the climate system, which in and of itself will result in a variety of different effects such as increased average storm intensity. Measuring averages over time makes sense from a climatic standpoint, but to the average person, they will likely not have the scientific background needed to be able to visualize climate change. Therein lies the problem.
