Violence in MY cities ? Firstly I don't own any cities............ Thank the gods. But I do believe I have heard there are few cities in the world that DON'T have violence. I am only guessing mind you. It's just one of those silly rumours I have heard.
Who mentioned torturing crims ? Not me. I said that if you put them in some kind of PB, you had better be sure they aren't going to come out. A different thing entirely. Think it through.

the part after FR was not in reply to your post maybe I should have splitted them but I supposed that was enough, my bad.
It's not my fault if in english there is no distinction between singular and plural in the second person, anyhow I'm sure you (Dvr22999874) got from the context what i meant but wanted to make some kind of point.
This strong dicotomy in your thinking process is really part of the problem and the obstacle to any solution.

We're not talking life sentences for rape, are we? If I were raped, I'd want him to go to jail AND get counseling so he didn't rape someone else when he got out.

Why wouldn't you just want him to stay in jail?

I am all for violent offenders completing their time behind bars; but they too should be offered some type of rehab during their incarceration. Eventually they will get out and hopefully with the right type of treatment they will be able to change the behavior that led them to prison in the first place.

MsMJAY,

I used to agree with you. What would you say to the person whose daughter was raped? The father and/or mother wants this person to be punished and go to jail. They don't want the criminal avoiding jail and getting counseling and learning a trade. What do you say to the person who is the victim of the crime?

Have you seen Demolition Man?

seen it and loved it. They can learn to knit!

I don't think a life sentence is ordinarily appropriate for the most common type of rape, that by an acquaintance, which statistically involves less violence than anger, sadistic, war rape, etc.

Federal sentencing guidelines take use of violence (among other things) into account:
Under federal law, the punishment for rape can range from a fine to life imprisonment. The severity of the punishment is based on the use of violence, the age of the victim, and whether drugs or intoxicants were used to override consent. If the perpetrator is a repeat offender the law prescribes automatically doubling the maximum sentence.

See the chart in the above link for what types of rape are not eligible for life imprisonment under federal sentencing guidelines.

If these women had survived, I would have no problem with life imprisonment for the perpetrators: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheshire,_Connecticut,_home_invasion_murders

Using FR:

I agree drugs should be legalized and the money we would have spent keeping druggies in prison should be used for drug rehab.

I don't want my tax dollars supporting white collar and non-violent criminals. They should be made to repay their debt to their victims and to society. These days the criminals get all the money spent on them, the victims (for the most part) get nothing. This should change.

I agree that there is a segment of the population that is prone to violent crime. Prison makes these people better criminals. Very often there is no way to rehabilitate them b/c they were never habilitated in the first place. There is nothing to do other than lock them up.

For those that can be rehabilitated, obviously education is the key. There are some who might benefit from group therapy as well. A program where older, rehabilitated cons mentor the younger ones might work.

I think there's lots that could be done that we (as a nation) are not doing. If we were, we'd also have the sort of social services structure in place so that less people ended up in prison.
