Inverse square law.

You could use directed explosives, sure, but it's still gonna be one hell of a ride. Plus you need access to the materials that allow you to build directed explosives.

I'm sticking with Betty (my shotgun.)

VERY true. I was never an explosives man but I have seen a sandbag absorb a lot of the back-blast from a claymore. Would that work in any way ?Maybe give you a headache but give the bad-guy an even worse one maybe ?

Maybe a little, but you'd add a lot of weight to an already heavy system. I'm with Malcolm and Betty on this one.

Why not a Herkimer Battle Jitney?

Um, an emp bomb is very easy to build. Just wrap a lot of wire around a stick of tnt or a pipe bomb and hook up to a car battery. Then, blow the charge. Anything electronic and most electrical within 100 yds will be down for the count.

I would be very leery of reactive armor on a home made vehicle... DARPA kept screwing that up for over 20 years before they got it marginally right. At least reactive armor was how I interpreted all the talk about hanging explosives on a vehicle.

For a zombie apocalypse, why not flame throwers?... now, where to get some calcium carbide (like used in miner's lamps). I'm trying to remember what metal makes a catalyst to ignite acetelyne???? Anyway, a tripwire dumping water on calcium carbide in a sealed container generates flamable gas. You have a catalytic ignition nozzle on the end of a copper tube to direct the flame. If you have seen an oxacetylene torch started, the flame before the oxygen is turned on is what you get. My cousin Johnny and I rigged one of those back when we were 12 and got a good proof of concept out of it. But, Uncle B.. made us give back the nozzle of his instant start blowtorch.

FR

There are all sorts of nifty things in the world, for people with time on their hands to play with.

For the rest of us, there is, "what is the simplest and most practical?"

I agree. I don't know how this thread drifted from starting a survival store to torching zombies and reactive armor. Surplus tents, gear, and uniforms are okay, maybe some vehicles, but no more than that. Like Malcolm and Heretic said, simpler is better. If you want to build a guntruck, go for it. Money's better spent on ensuring you've got clean water, food, shelter, heat, hygiene and the means to protect yourself.
