He of AK-47 fame.

It is said his firearms have killed more people than any other firearm in history.

Interestingly, he died pretty much in poverty. Didn't get too much material wealth from his design.

Like many designers and developers, his work belonged to his employer, not to him. I imagine this is even more true in a socialist state.

I wonder if President Pantload will send Kerry or "Jumpin' Joe over for the funeral?

There would be no reason for the US to be represented, he was a private citizen, so it won't be a State funeral.

I watched an interview of him on tv several years ago and he seemed to be doing alright. The home he claimed to live in did not look like poverty. Where do you draw this information that he died in poverty?

Instead of imagining you could avail yourself of google.

Because they did exactly what they were supposed to, pretty much no matter what you did to them. I read in a news story that his rifle even appears on the flag of a country it helped liberate.

The man did leave a mark on the world in his 94 years. RIP.

Mikhail Kalashnikov was a tank crewman in WW2, his hobby was engineering. When he was wounded and unable to fight on the front, he went to work at a weapons factory.

He started designing the AK47 while working at that plant. His design was so simple, with enough tolerances in the parts that you could bury it in mud, sand or dirt and it would fire. It is the least likely to jam of any production assault weapon on the planet.

From the AK47 design, the soviets developed a series of assault weapons.

From that standpoint, the man was a genius, and probably the last firearm designer to follow the idea of simple is better, with the exception of the Israelis.

Now for all you anti gun advocates, this is one of the guys you dont like so much, the designer of the AK, the most manufactured assault rifle in the world. There are 10's of millions of these beauties in circulation.

Over 100 million, by some estimates. Don't condemn him for what his creation has done, recognize that he created it out of duty to his country. He didn't invent anything new, but took what he had available to him and created a very good machine to arm oftentimes poorly trained soldiers. Good or bad, he made his mark on history.

I recently added two AK's to my collection, one was soviet made and the other was a Romanian made. The soviet AK has papers to prove its authenticity, and I bought it as a curiosity. Both have wood stocks and butts, and both are sweet to fire.

By adding the two weapons, I have gone from "dangerous gun owner" to "insane gun nutjob" in the eyes of the anti gun people.

The AK47 is the single most used gun in history according to the Military channels top 10 assault rifle show the reasons are simplicity and functionality the gun works every time almost without fail and of the failures the most likely cause is the ammo not the gun itself.

The chinese were smart guys too.......they manufactured the AK47 but they made the calibre a mil larger. They could pick up and fire russian ammo but the russians couldn't use theirs. Cleveeeeerrr

Guinea has what looks like a BB gun on it's coat of arms. I've seen the flag with the hand clutching an AK47 on it but can't for the life of me remember which country has it. I have a feeling it's one of the West African countries and if that's so and that is what you call 'liberated' may the gods help us all.

He didn't patent his design, but he died a Russian Lt. General (0-7) and a 1/3 owner of German corporation that licensed out his images, logos, etc., so I'm not sure how relative his 'poverty' was.

No they didn't. It would be both an engineering, tactical, and logistic mistake to do that. 7.62X39 CCCP is the same no matter where it was made, and the same goes for 5.45X39 as well. They're currently fielding a 6.8 mm cartridge in their home-brewed family of arms, but their old AKs were identical in caliber to everyone else's.

Yeah, it's very relative sort of term, but the rebels won, and put the gun on their flag, so what the hell.
