So about two years ago I packed up for a trip to Pennsylvania at Passover (Easter time for most of you)with a couple of rifles and a shotgun. I was going to go to the range with my family. I had all the long arms carefully wrapped in blankets so they wouldn't get scratched and gun locks on them because I knew I was going to be travelling just a little way through a corner of Maryland. And, of course, an ammunition case. I also had a brand new shiny plastic card that says, "LICENSE TO CARRY FIREARMS." Yay! Well, halfway there and I was at the last stop in West Virginia. I dutifully took my pistol from my belt and unloaded it ( double-checked the chamber to make sure it was really empty.) I locked it in it's own case and put the magazine in the ammo box (also locked.) Maryland has some pretty harsh gun laws. I'm a good citizen! Then, about 25 minutes later I am at the first rest stop in Pennsylvania and I wanted to reload my pistol and put it in it's accustomed place in my belt. Have you ever tried to balance an ammo case on the rear bumper of a car? Oops. Did I mention that one of the rifles I brought was a .22 LR? A little aside for the people who don't live in countries where firearm ownership is legal: the .22 LR is one of the most popular rounds available, also the tiniest, and they sell it in boxes of 1000. So for twenty minutes of travel through MD I ended up spending 2 hours picking up little brass cartridges off the pavement. All because I was being a good citizen (maybe partly because I was clumsy.) I think next time I'm just going to drive through and deal with the risk. It's only twenty minutes, right? What could happen? Why are there flashing lights in my rear view mirror?
