MalcolmNathaniel -> Guns! (A little less vitriolic than other threads.) (12/20/2013 5:25:47 PM)

So about two years ago I packed up for a trip to Pennsylvania at Passover (Easter time for most of you)with a couple of rifles and a shotgun. I was going to go to the range with my family.

I had all the long arms carefully wrapped in blankets so they wouldn't get scratched and gun locks on them because I knew I was going to be travelling just a little way through a corner of Maryland. And, of course, an ammunition case.

I also had a brand new shiny plastic card that says, "LICENSE TO CARRY FIREARMS." Yay! Well, halfway there and I was at the last stop in West Virginia. I dutifully took my pistol from my belt and unloaded it ( double-checked the chamber to make sure it was really empty.) I locked it in it's own case and put the magazine in the ammo box (also locked.) Maryland has some pretty harsh gun laws.

I'm a good citizen!

Then, about 25 minutes later I am at the first rest stop in Pennsylvania and I wanted to reload my pistol and put it in it's accustomed place in my belt. Have you ever tried to balance an ammo case on the rear bumper of a car? Oops.

Did I mention that one of the rifles I brought was a .22 LR?

A little aside for the people who don't live in countries where firearm ownership is legal: the .22 LR is one of the most popular rounds available, also the tiniest, and they sell it in boxes of 1000.

So for twenty minutes of travel through MD I ended up spending 2 hours picking up little brass cartridges off the pavement. All because I was being a good citizen (maybe partly because I was clumsy.) I think next time I'm just going to drive through and deal with the risk. It's only twenty minutes, right? What could happen?

Why are there flashing lights in my rear view mirror?

And in Nebraska they have been known to demand to see receipts to prove ownership for any firearms or they will confiscate them at a traffic stop. And, good luck at ever getting them back even if no charges are filed.

A co-worker of mine had the contents of his gun safe sitting in the back of a U-Haul truck confiscated as he was passing through on a move. Three years later he is still trying to get his property returned.

He must have the world's crappiest lawyer then.

We don't even own a 22 anymore. Yet at some point off from the shelf came this little canister spilling those rotten tiny cartridges all over the floor. I think I put them back on the can, back on the shelf. Because you can't throw them out in the garbage.
Next time I come across them, I'll give them to the cops to dispose of.

Just give them to another shooter. Ammunition has gotten crazy expensive lately so I'm sure the cartridges will be welcomed.

No need to waste them.

I don't know too many people with a 22, but yeah, there is somebody I could give them to. Thanks for the idea.

FR

Can I offer a much simpler solution?

Simplify. Take the gun off your belt and put it under the seat for the 20 minutes of Maryland, and if you should get pulled over and the cop asks if you have a gun in the car, lie. And make sure those firearms cards in your wallet aren't visible, if you need to pull out the driver's license.

I have certainly given that some thought. Risk vs. reward tends to a maximum. Next time I won't try to balance the ammunition on the bumper.

Or maybe you could risk NOT wearing the gun when driving??? Who are you going to shoot in the car (hmmm....ok, maybe when traveling long distance with kids saying "are we there yet!")

I am thinking a loaded weapon, pointed downward in your pants when sitting... Bye bye little buddy if the air bag deploys[:D]

I'll take 'em! Can never have enough .22!

Hundreds of thousands of cops carry a firearm on their belt and don't seem to have a problem... maybe the holster manufacturers know a little something ?

What you're doing there, I don't believe it qualifies as "thinking."

We were laughing when George Zimmerman got arrested again. The reporter said that he was "found with a stash of over 100 bullets".

I joking said "That's not even a good day at the range. We have over 5,000 rounds of 22 alone."

One of our anti-gun friends said, "You don't need 5000 bullets."

I replied "You don't need 48 rolls of toilet paper either, but you buy it that way because it's cheaper. The same applies to ammunition."

Yep. The headline I saw said he had a "large amount of ammunition."

It always amuses me when people who know absolutely nothing about firearms try to discuss normal practices involving them.

Yup. I think it's funny when someone presents an argument against something, but then says things that make it clear that they don't know what they're arguing against.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: Guns! (A little less vitriolic than other threads.) (12/21/2013 3:43:21 PM)

Yeah, since pistol ammunition is sold in boxes of 50, 100 is just two boxes. My pistol came with 2 magazines: one hold 13 and the other holds 16. Allowing for one in the chamber that's thirty rounds right there.

As for the airbag: My carry pistol was chosen because it has two safeties and the trigger is covered by my holster. That doesn't even include the internal safeties. The chances of it going off when I don't want it to are negligible.
