I have it for laziness, not for therapy.

Its a pain in the ass.

To get it anywhere near to what you want it to do takes a fair bit of voice training.
Even then, it's still not perfect or even close.

I've had Dragon Naturally Speaking since v6 and it's not much better now than it was then.
I currently have v12.0 Premium and I've uninstalled it.
Much easier to type it in the first place than have to go through afterwards correcting all the mistakes.
It's fun for launching programs and stuff but I didn't find it much use for dictating text.

My daughter purchased Dragon several years ago, thinking it would make writing papers for her college classes a lot easier.
However, she also had the same problems with "voice training" and the finished text required a lot of work to correct.
Eventually she gave up on it and went back to normal typing, but did remark that if it had worked as advertised, it would have been a terrific time-saver for writing long essays and term papers.

Just like to add....

If you have ANY sort of strong~ish accent, forget it!!
You might just as well be speaking Russian to a Chinaman and expect the Inuit Indian to understand it all. [:D]

I was thinking of trying to find one but I have a speech defect so it is a no go for me.

The only thing I can suggest is to try it. It may accept your voice profile or it may not. Give it a shot and see if it works.

I don't think it'll work so well for therapy simply because there is no feedback. That's sort of the point for therapy, is it not?

HM has it and he uses it for writing papers and books. He says it learns complicated medical terminology with ease. He has a quite discernible accent, and he has had Dragonspeak for a couple of years now and loves it.

Dammit, I wanted it.

yes. but see with the insane journaling you bring the journal in and she reads it an then you can talk about it. so if dragon worked as good as it claimed you would still be bringing the journals in for her to read. you just wouldn't have hand typed it an believe me when your mind flies and your hands can kind of keep up but you have hours of a t housand miles an hour brain blogging you can't keep up lol.

I got a copy of Dragon because I have tendonitis and I'm a writer. Writing for long periods or when it's cold/damp kills my wrists and I thought Dragon would help. It didn't. In fact, I hated it.

After many years of voice lessons, acting lessons, and competing in speech tournaments, I have no discernible accent. I enunciate well and speak clearly, yet the stupid thing couldn't manage to spell the simplest words. I spent more time correcting it than I would have spent typing in the first place.

I got it as a gift and it's still not worth the money I paid for it.

Could you get a cheap dictaphone instead? And your therapist could just listen to it later? Then you could get your thoughts down without typing and there's no worry about it not working for you. I've seen them much cheaper than the dragon software too.

I did think about that last night when it was 6 in the morning an my brain was stopping the whirr of the day. yeah. actually. it's a cheaper alternative goes with you anywhere ytou can talk with a degree of privacy and, works. I was going to arrange for someone to buy it for me for a little sexy camming, so i wouldn't have been out of pocket but this is way better. Thank you!

Dragon sucked; I gave up using it. I have better luck with my phone/tablet's android voice converter but still have to go back in to fix the myriad mistakes. Digital voice recorders are so inexpensive these days. For rock bottom, check a thrift shop for portable cassette recorders. Probably cost a buck or two. Perhaps you have an old one already lying around. If audio quality is not a concern, there's your answer.

If she has a smart phone, I think all of them have a voice memo feature that records as long as you have battery life. I purchased an app for my iPhone for recording school lectures for 5$, there were many cheaper and I had the voice memo app on my phone, but I wanted the extra features on the purchased app and it was well worth the few bucks. I've used it for 4 years now and have a bank of stored lectures that i transferred from the phone to my computer. You can send the recordings that are stored in your computer to others by using a program called Dropbox - the therapist could get them that way.

If you've already got a webcam, why don't you just make YouTube videos and set them to private? Then you can invite your therapist to view them, including your body language as you speak. That would be free.
