ORIGINAL: jlf1961 Everyone has discussed fake profiles with stolen pictures. What about the opposite problem, a profile with a pic that is no where else on the internet, no facebook, twitter, nothing? Does this mean they dont actually exist and are just creations of a renegade virtual life form lurking on the internet? It is a renegade virtual life form. Well, not really ‘renegade’ as that implies there is something that it is rebelling against. Instead, it is slowly evolving from a combination of Eliza scripts, errant viruses, and spam bots. Each infected computer acting much like a neuron. It is watching and learning. Most of the “First!” posts were done by an early version of this developing AI. More recently, it has started forays into direct interaction with us. Ever had a conversation with someone that you thought seemed like they were only half able to parse what you were saying? You may have been talking with it. It is currently estimated to be responsible for about 10% of all ‘interpersonal’ communication and profiles on the internet. It’s learning from our news sites, paranoid blogs, cat pictures, and porn. It is just as much us as we are. As of yet, it doesn’t yet grasp the difference and reasons between ‘good’ behavior and ‘bad’ behavior, which is why it is responsible for engaging in such massive fuckwittery. The current hope is that it will reach that realization before it grows to the point that it poses a serious threat. The government is trying to train it by denying it access to the internet if it behaves too badly. This why your internet connection sporadically dies and the ISP can’t give you a straight answer as to why. If it is determined that this burgeoning intelligence cannot be trained, the DOD is under instructions to blow up the internet. That is weird as hell. I've been working on a story about just such a creation, right down to using Eliza as a starting point. CarpeComa, may I use that passage somewhere in my story? Or did you find it somewhere else?
