..... on shoes.

I'm not a girly girl at all, so when I want to dress up a bit, I'm totally lost. Normally I live in my running shoes, summer, winter, doesn't matter. This weekend, I'm going to a contra dance, and I want to dress up a bit. Not fancy, but a flowy skirt and top. But I have no clue what shoes would go with this.

Help!

It's summer time, so take the getting into girly shoes slow and easy with some heeled sandals.

For winter, try sexy boots.

Go to the best show store you can afford, heels will be hell on feet not used to them.

Since you don't wear girly shoes often, splurge on a color that will match your girly outfit. And have I mentioned handbags?

If your not used to wearing heels, Kitten heels are making a huge comeback and are ultra sexy.. great for summer wearing

They have the cutest closed toe shoes, with a back strap made especially for dancing. I am tall so I like the fact they are still very sexy but with a low heel like kitten shoes. Comfort and sexy all in one.

Toysinbabeland -> RE: I need some girl advice..... (8/30/2013 7:53:39 AM)

Aerosoles heels can be worn all night without pain.

lovethyself -> RE: I need some girl advice..... (8/30/2013 8:19:34 AM)

So, heels then. I'm have to see what I have in the closet. I didn't plan to wear a skirt for this, but then I realized I now have skirts (He likes to see me in them). I've mostly only worn them at home, so no shoes needed. I'm hoping to actually dance at the contra (think country dance, or ceili type thing, with a band and caller), but in past years I've noticed that if you don't dress for the dancing, it's assumed you're not interested, so you don't get asked as much. Since it's part of a bigger weekend event, not everyone there is there for the dancing.

Thanks for the suggestions. Um... what are kitten heels? Can I assume they're just low heels, or is there something specific that makes them 'kitten'?

They are a low heel that tapers towards the bottom

Omg, a shoe thread! I'm in heaven!

I think strappy wedges go great with skirts, and they are comfy too.
I love a black skirt with black strappy wedges, they make your calf muscles look delish!

I like the kitten heel idea and they can be super sexy. I have a pair of slingbacks that look like this:

There will be lots of spinning, twirling, somewhat fast paced dancing happening. I don't think the higher heels would work for me, since I can barely walk in them normally. Lol.

Where's MistressDartArts? She knows what kind of dancing I'm talking about.

I should maybe also mention that the skirt is more of a casual thing, not formal wear at all. More like this. I'm not posting pics here cause I'm on my phone, and I can't tell if there are minors in the pics.

If you find that even wearing kitten heels is a problem, just wear a pair of black flats. Flats are very, very popular right now. They even make ones that look like a mix between ballet shoes and regular flats. I have a pair and I love them. They look nice with skirts yet flat and comfortable.

6 inch heels go with everything.

(Trust me on this).

25 years of contra dancing up and down the west coast have taught me your running shoes are ideal for this, especially a well-broken in pair. If you find that the soles grab too much while buzz stepping, slide an old sock over toe/ball of the foot part of the shoe.

Contra folk are generally focused on comfort. Yes, we wear beautiful flowing skirts (men too!) and light tops, but that's mostly to keep cool since it's intensely aerobic.

Congratulations, is this your first dance? I think you will love it! If you haven't danced before, have a look at this great video for a preview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9L0dz3qmsc

Wow, I hope we have a chance to meet some day. Between the acoustic music and contra, we seem to have several things in common. Have fun! Hope to see you on the floor sometime!

MDA, if your band is ever playing a gig in Ontario, hit me up! I'd love to hang with you, and see you perform. I grew up in the Toronto folk community, started dancing step clog, and play fiddle for an english morris group. I've been to contras in the past, and when I was younger I mostly danced as the guy, since there weren't enough guys to partner.

The difference with this one is it's part of a larger weekend event, and it's assumed with my age group that if you aren't dressed for dancing, you're not interested. There are sessions happening in other rooms at the same time. I want to dance, since I get so little chance to do it these days (my dance group is a mens group, so I'm not allowed to dance with them when we busk). I usually end up barefoot by the end, but I wanted to be feminine for at least the start. Whatever I end up bringing, I have to carry there in the morning, along with my fiddle and costume for the dance group.

LW, I love the idea of flats. I will definitely have to look into getting a pair for my closet. It sounds like just what I would wear. Thanks!

I can't wear heels. and when I have tried, it was like watching a cow totter a clomp clomp clomping along. *shudders*... but kitten heels? I may have gotten a few (*koff* six *koff*) pairs on my most recent stopover in the USA.

My darlings lushy, hejira, and tulip were all at fault. They made me buy the shoes. It wasn't my choice. Honest.

MsMJAY -> RE: I need some girl advice..... (8/30/2013 8:57:32 PM)

I saw shoes and got all excited!!! I'm loving the pics. Please keep them coming. This is better than porn![:D]

littlewonder -> RE: I need some girl advice..... (8/30/2013 10:18:33 PM)

These are the flats that I own and I love the glitter ones when I want to have fun when I dress up and the black ones are just extremely comfortable when my feet are hurting.

Me too, so when I dress up I go for wedges with thick soles. The first time I wore these was to a wedding, so I was in them for a really long time - no "breaking in" required. I got them at Kohl's. (They only carry up to size 10 in the store but had 11s online.)

^^^Those are adorable wedges! But contra is strenuous, and it isn't likely someone would make it through a 3 hour dance with heels that high. Also, I recommend closed shoes as opposed to sandals; feet do get accidentally stepped on, and side foot support contributes to staying power on the dance floor.

From the top down, contra fashion ends at the ankles. It is quite common to see a graceful, meticulously put together outfit ending in a clunky pair of comfortable support shoes (often with cute socks, though).

Seriously, these have been my contra shoes for the last 5 years. I bought them at Kmart on sale for $6 (actual leather!)
