Although I am known for being a shoe diva (the higher the better), I would not recommend a heel for this event. Contra dancing requires you to be up on the balls of your feet for most of the dance, so a dance flat or cute athletic shoe is best (but not one that is too grippy to the ground). If you want to spend some cash- a low ballroom dance shoe would work. It has to be a heel lower than 2 inches with straps to keep it on. A leather sole helps for twirling and spinning.

A high heel will limit your movement and a wedge will kill you.

When I was a kid, I'd just shuck my shoes off for Scottish or English Contra dancing.

Aside to MasterCaneman: I did work for Witness for Peace in Nicaragua in the 80's. Thanks for the bad pun and the memories!

I did go to the dance, I watched a lot of dancing. I gotta say, I didn't actually get up the courage to ask someone to dance. I also wore the wrong shoes during the day (I have 2 pairs for our uniform, and I grabbed the ones that rub my anckle with the wrong socks). By the time we all got back from touring the city, I was estatic to be able to but my normal runners on.

I did get to catch up with people I hadn't seen in a couple of years, as well as met some new people.

The band was a local seed band. We have a lot of musicians come to the weekend and enjoy playing in the band. So we hire a core to keep the music going so no guests feel obligated to stay up there all night. The band I beileve was Relative Harmony. The callers were likewise people that were up for the weekend that had called in the past and offered to call a couple of dances. There's a lot of crossover from the Morris dance community and the country/contra dance community up here.

Ooooooo! I checked out Relative Harmony's page and can't wait to hear some samples from them. Lucky you to see them in person! Sounds like a great dance :-)

I've actually known the family for years, so I've heard them play a lot. They've been around under one name or another for decades (though not always with the kids playing). I grew up on their kids album. Lol. They are a lot of fun to see.
