You have to nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. [:D]

That new enzymatic stuff works wonders.

But: carpet, padding, and anything under has to go. Including mastic under tiles under carpet. Yup.

LittleGirlHeart -> RE: her whole house reeks of cat urine and she wants to get her carpets cleaned professionally (8/14/2013 8:37:48 PM)

No, she feeds the ferals. that show up in her yard, and some were pregnant, or had babies with them, and she couldn't afford to have them fixed, so some had litter after litter, and they had litters. She said she tried getting help for getting them homes, but nobody would help, so now she has a bunch, and when they have babies both mom's n litter come in infill old buff to go out.

Mmm about 2 years maybe.

If she's renting, then she needs to pay for the replacement of the carpet and subfloor. You say "ages".....as in how many years? You're not going to get rid of that smell without doing he repairs that everyone else has already recommended. Depending on the amount of carpet and flooring needs to be replaced, I hope that woman has a lot of money in the bank. She should consider herself lucky if she doesn't get evicted for the damages the cats caused.

She's not one of those animal hoarder types is she? Id she is, there's a bigger issue there that should be addressed.

Yeah. That's hoarding.

once she gets all the cats causing this issue rehomed she wants to try to get the god awful smell out of her house and her carpets. This issue has been going on for years so the smell is really really "ground in" and it's horrific, one step into the door way of her house and you wanna run the other way or gag. she's done carpet shampoo'ers before and yeah they remove the dirt somewhat but not the odor, and i think i have heard that there are carpet cleaning companies that specialize in carpet and soft surface clean up from heavy repeated over time pet soilage.

Am I on the right track? How else once she gets all the soft surfaces in her home professionally cleaned can she help clear up the odor if the carpet cleaning doesn't help much. Or can you ever come back from that smell after it's been ages an ages?

Carpet cleaning won't help. It has soaked into the padding and most likely the flooring underneath. She will need to pull everything up and repair the hard floor underneath before she can put down new carpeting and pad.

Carpet cleaning only removes the very top layer of dirt but that's about it. They don't get into the padding and underlayment. And actually trying to clean the carpet will only make it worse because now she has pet smell mixed with damp carpet which makes the smell even stronger.

Let's hope your friend isn't sued by the landlord for the cost of repairs.
Looks like it will be many thousands.

I've seen this movie somewhere before.

It doesn't have a happy ending.

Yeap, that is definitely animal hoarding. Had a friend like that....the neighborhood LOVED dropping off their unwanted cats on her, knowing she would take care of them. Don't know what happen to the cats when she died of cancer.

Every place I've ever lived has had a program to fix feral cats for free or minimal costs.

How is she planning on accomplishing this?

You have carpets in your living rooms?

You have carpets in your living rooms?

It's very common in the US.
I've even seen carpeted kitchens and bathrooms.

FR

Nature's Miracle is truly a miracle.

Don't ask how I know.

Good suggestion for "normal" cat accident type situations, but I really doubt if it will help someone who's been letting multiple cats urinate wherever they like for years.

that kinda stuff never worked for me.. and I never had those kinda HUGE kitty problems..

ick... I hate carpet.. I rip it all out.. quite frankly I would rather have the bare plywood than that critter and dirt magnet.. ick.. carpet holds moisture too.. ick... when you remove carpet is when you find out all the grossness of it.. [:'(]

and there are a lot of chemicals in carpet, especially new carpet.. people with sensitivities look for homes that don't have any of that..

maybe the carpet was old and ready to be replaced anyway?

MariaB -> RE: her whole house reeks of cat urine and she wants to get her carpets cleaned professionally (8/15/2013 8:01:07 AM)

We tend to have marble or tiled floors throughout the house here and some of the older houses have polished wooden floors. In England they tend to have wood everywhere but the bedrooms.

Carpet in the bathroom and kitchen is disturbing!

pahunkboy -> RE: her whole house reeks of cat urine and she wants to get her carpets cleaned professionally (8/15/2013 8:05:49 AM)

This post is timely- as my cat peed outside her box the other day- one day before that- it was dirty- so it could be my fault.

When I bought my house- it was a foreclosure- this means I had to bring it to standards to get a mortgage on it. I had to tear the carpet out due to pee. When I did tho- the bank complained. I was required to have floor covering- EVEN IF IT HAS PEE ON IT.

floor covering doesn't have to be carpet tho... it can be many other less soakable materials..

eta- you are a bad daddy! you need to clean your catbox!.. either that or get an automatic cleaning one..

I really liked the white tile I saw so much of in Mexico.

But they don't have any problem with cold floors, do they?

MariaB -> RE: her whole house reeks of cat urine and she wants to get her carpets cleaned professionally (8/15/2013 10:50:28 AM)

Underfloor heating FrostedFlake. Nice and cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

that is complete bull. I live in England and have carpets throughout most of my house. virtually everyone I know has carpets throughout their houses. although one friend has put laminate down due to having a lot of dogs she says it is no cleaner, it's cold, and wishes she'd stuck to carpets.

all I can say is that a clean house is a clean house. if you're a mucky sod, or don't care for your animals correctly, then so it your house.

it never ceases to amaze me when people say they have changed their floors because of their animals, but then let them sleep on the sofa and their beds. so your animals are too disgusting to lay and walk on a carpet, but clean enough to sleep on your sofa and bed. no logic there.

having been in a friend's house with a cat that pees everywhere I can tell you that even tiles and laminate don't stop it stinking.
