Why do you have two threads on the same subject?

popeye1250 -> RE: Norwegian rape victim "pardoned" in Dubai. (7/22/2013 10:33:28 AM)

tail, this is a *differant* subject.

(And in other news George Zimmerman will change his name to "Ben Ghazzi" so the Obama administration will never mention his name again.)

Yes but unless I am mistaken the rapist is also free.

So now it is your belief that dubai has embraced multiculturalism?[8|]

Pragmatic thinking obviously. I predicted something like this when I found they were not exactly hustling her off to prison. Here's what's got my undies in a bunch. The US state department in it's own travel advisories on UAE does not say something sensible like, "Female travelers should avoid this destination". Rather, it recommends that if you are raped you should go to the local authorities.

Huh?

"Dalelv said her attacker was sentenced to 13 months for extramarital sex and consuming alcohol without a license."

Why cant people spend 10 seconds with Mr Google before they post?
It prevents ignorant posts.

Jeff, the State Dept has been behind the curve for decades.
USCG "code" for them when I was in was,..."white collar welfare."
I have a cousin who worked for that private security firm (Blackthorn?) in the 80's and he said that they were useless as for getting any info from, that they'd be asking the security guys about local conditions.

I am glad this Lady was pardoned but the real issue here is countries like Dubai who still have laws like this on the book. Religion and politics do not mix and this is a clear case of that here. First off, I wouldn't be traveling to these countries in the first place. Dubai only pardoned this Lady because it was bad publicity. Still, if the laws still on the book, nothing changes. This Lady was raped and then she was found "guilty" of Adultery. What a joke of a justice system there. Dubai isn't the only country as many countries in the Middle East treat their Women like second class citizens. America needs to put its foot down with countries like this and let them know this kind of action is intolerable. What makes Dubai stand out, is that it pretends to be a tourist haven for Westerners. When in reality, Dubai is no better than the rest of the countries in the Middle East who have no respect for Women at all.

If I read the story correct, the "accuser" was also pardoned. Where is the justice here? What a joke of a court system. Some countries really still are stuck in the 1500's.

You mean the accused, don't you?

Hill check THIS out

This link is why I stated he was also free... see what I mean?

quote from the link:

The alleged attacker, identified as a 33-year-old Sudanese man, was charged with the same offenses and received a 13-month sentence. He also cleared by a pardon, according to Dalelv.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Norwegian rape victim "pardoned" in Dubai. (7/22/2013 12:09:23 PM)

Saw that. my mistake.

I saw she lost her job too which sucks but I'd guess they could always say that was for the partying.
If she woke up and realized the guy was having sex with her, it's good odds she was drinking heavily.
That doesn't excuse the rape but if I were an employer, I'd think twice about having someone on the crew who was a heavy drinker or did drugs. I got to watch a good friend die in an industrial accident on my 24th birthday because he took his lunch break along with his recreation.

Thus spake the voice of the military industrial complex.

I, for one, wish America would take a look at it's own problems which are, at last count, pressing. How about we worry about saving the rest of the world after we've cleaned up our own systemic abuses, fed our own poor, and in general kept our nose in our own business.
