I just saw a commercial about a woman having her first kid, she was covered up breast feeding. Then it showed her having her second kid. She had her boob out and baby was going to town. The waiter in the commercial was starring. My question is obvious, thus the poll. What y'all think and why?

Missdressed -> RE: Breast feeding in public (7/4/2013 1:35:47 AM)

I fed two out of my four. The last one I suppose I was an extended term breat feeder. I just called it lazy.

I just fed them and did the one top up one down method and had a shawl if I thought people would stare.

I would have loved, one of these though

But sadly I'm heading to one of these

My baby couldn't breastfeed. I'd have fed her anywhere, dressed in anything, if I could have just got her to eat. The few times I did try in public in the early days I used a shawl for the latching on - didn't really have much choice because it wasn't working so I couldn't have done it without extended bare-nipple time. Once latched on you can't see much anyway.

The mothers I know who do breastfeed usually get so quick and efficient at getting baby latched on that there's really nothing to see - at least nothing you couldn't see if they were wearing a low-cut top. I think breastfeeding in public should be encouraged. It's all well and good to say breastfeeding is best for babies, but if as a culture we make women feel that they are doing something so shameful it must never be seen in public we're making it a harder choice.

Now that I've been there myself I spot people breastfeeding in public all the time - my husband almost never notices. It mostly just looks like baby cuddles. I've never seen anyone 'whip out a boob' as I often hear people saying because it's mostly unnecessary - I suppose I might think she was an attention seeker if I saw that. I wouldn't be offended though.

What really makes me mad is the suggestion that women should go to the public toilets to breastfeed. Talk about unpleasant and unsanitary.

I support breast feeding in public, covered up or not.

You left out the best part of the commercial; when the waiter's staring, the woman goes: "Oh! Up here" while gesturing to her eyes.

Oh, I guess I should address the question:

I "made up my own reason" and my reason is that feeding our children is one of the most natural things we can do. Anyone that gets offended by it should be slowly starved to death (out of sight, away from everyone so we don't scandalize others).

Peace and comfort,

I was out yesterday with some friends for a meal. There was a VERY young baby crying and crying and crying and the parents were shusshing and patting and dummying and faffing.

And all I could think was "FGS just shove your boob in it's mouth"

In the end, she got all covered up with a coat and sat all twisted so she was angled away from the room and fed the baby.

And all I could think was how sad that she had to do 20 mins of faffing and then get all humphed up like a prat so she could feed her child.

BlaqPeppa -> RE: Breast feeding in public (7/4/2013 2:33:13 AM)

Its not just the womans right, its the babys right as a human. Should the baby have to go hungry because people get offended? People can get offended by anything. I'm offended by your face, may you please cover it up?

ShaharThorne -> RE: Breast feeding in public (7/4/2013 3:11:15 AM)

It is a natural thing and I have popped out the boob when I was breastfeeding Lizard (OMG, she is 18 now...this is aging me!). I also had a breast pump so Bo could bottle feed her and bond with her before I dried up.

Mom was my breast feeding instructor...kinda cool when a parent is a L&D/nursery nurse. I got free Lamaze(?) breathing lessons from her as well.

Haha yea that's the one!
Reason for asking is because we were at work (club) talking about it and this girl was like "I just don't think that's appropriate to do". Before I thought about what was coming out of my mouth, I spouted " you fucking take your clothes off for money!"
I don't see what's wrong with it. I would prolly use a shawl just because I'm shy like that. Yes I'm a dancer, but yes I'm shy like that in public places.

Anyway, hell I've seen more tit on Beale street in the summer, lol.

Breastfeeding may be a natural thing, so is taking a dump, but that is generally not regarded as acceptable practice in public.

Not all of us are into boobs and exhibitionism. Please be discreet.

I wondered how long it would be before someone made the inevitable comparison to 'taking a dump' . Feces is a waste product. It smells bad. It comes out of your body and then has to be disposed of. Breastmilk is not a waste product. It does not smell. It goes directly from boob to baby so doesn't need to be disposed of. It can be done with minimal undressing. It is not at all the same. It is a food for a child.

As I've already said, I've never personally seen a woman who was being an exhibitionist about it. Believe me, when you have a fussy, hungry baby, your first thought is how you can keep them calm and comfortable, not whether it's an opportunity to show off some tit.

It's reasonable to expect someone not to remove their shirt to breastfeed in public. But comparing it to defecation, and implying that it's an act of exhibitionism comes across as misogynistic. Clearly the female body and human infants must be dirty and/or sexually taboo.

Breastfeeding is so very good for babies. Not just the breastmilk (which is an incredible substance which actually changes according to how hot it is, how hungry the baby is, the age of the child and the time of day, not to mention provides immune system boosts) but the actual act of breastfeeding has all sorts of benefits. It should be encouraged. It IS generally encouraged by health professionals, but ignorant comments like this put a lot of pressure on women to give up.

littleclip -> RE: Breast feeding in public (7/4/2013 4:04:43 AM)

it is only in the western culture that breasts are not acceptable to be seen. the rest of the world breast feeding is what you do to feed the child and no more is thought of it. my wife took all our children from breast to cup and never had a second thought about it.

Toysinbabeland -> RE: Breast feeding in public (7/4/2013 4:09:47 AM)

I'll be offended by breast feeding when men stop wearing no tops while playing basketball or at a swimming pool, and when adults stop sucking nipples at all.

^^^ that there.

It's nothing like "taking a dump"

And, you know what, how about you TURN YOUR FUCKING HEAD AWAY AND DON'T LOOK.

There, see how easily I sorted that for you and stopped you being offended?

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: Breast feeding in public (7/4/2013 4:18:30 AM)

I voted its a woman's choice.

I breastfed both my kids, my son for almost three years, and managed to do so discretely in public. This was over 30 years ago, and very few people had an issue, at least one they were willing to express to ME.

I'm still amazed that people have issues with this. Here in the US, breasts are so obviously viewed as nothing but sexual parts, when in reality breasts are meant to feed babies, this is their function. That men (and some of us females, too) like to look at them is secondary.

Once again I am embarrassed as to how moronic this culture is about anything sexual. It's fine to show tits all over on TV, but a woman can't feed her baby in public, really?

littleclip -> RE: Breast feeding in public (7/4/2013 4:20:07 AM)

just as a addendum there is no legal diffrence in a bare chest of a male and that of a female

Missdressed -> RE: Breast feeding in public (7/4/2013 4:20:29 AM)

I know it doesn't cover breastfeeding in public, but I thought this map made some interesting points.

It's their choice how much boob they want to show while feeding a bub imo... having a babies face next to the boob kinda puts a dampener on any sexyness for me anyway!

Em, I hate to be the one to break it to you, but feeding a baby is feeding a baby. It's not really about being sexy.

I fed the baby, I couldn't really give a shit whether another adult in the vicinity finds it sexy or not. I cared about sustaining my child, feeding them, comforting them.

I hate to break it to you, but you wouldn't be the most important person in my consideration.

That was a bit OTT. No? I don't think it's much of a stretch to say that many men and a fair number of ladies find boobs to be sexy.

I think it's also fair to say that the people who are "offended" feel that way because the lady is "showing a sexual part of her anatomy".

I think the person was just commenting that since they didn't find the boobs to be sexy boobs to be sexual items, at that particular time, they weren't offended by it.

Peace and comfort,

Michael
