Stockholm's male train drivers wearing skirts to work

More than a dozen male employees working for the Roslagsbanan train services in the Swedish capital have been wearing skirts in order to keep cool. One of the drivers, Martin Åkersten, explained that temperatures can hit 95F (35C) in the train cab during the summer. Uniform regulations by the train company Arriva state that skirts or long trousers are acceptable. At a meeting last year, drivers were told that shorts were not allowed.

Needless to say, another meeting is scheduled. Heh.

Good for them. Although allowing them to wear Bermuda length shorts would have been a much easier solution. I am having this image of these guys wearing all different styles of skirts from minis, pencil skirts and long flowy types. Seems saying the long shorts for everyone would have been easier to maintain the uniformity of the uniforms for everyone.

Here, our postmen wear shorts or long pants. I may have seen a couple of women wear skirts, but they were in the post office not delivery.

We have a woman that delivers in a skirt. She works downtown and has to do a lot of walking between businesses and houses. Totally unrelated, but I enjoy seeing her. She always looks so happy.

As for the men in skirts, I was picturing the same thing - women's different fashion skirts.
Now, if it were a kilt, I wouldn't mind seeing that. I love seeing men in kilts.

I thought a kilt was a specific type of skirt, not simply because a man was wearing it.

Although I agree, if the train company had a kilt designed as a uniform option, that would be cool.

I often wear dresses and skirts in the summer. The occasional breeze is very refreshing. [:D]

There is no difference between a kilt and a skirt, they are basically the simplest form of clothing outside a loincloth:). I am not entirely sure, but I believe in traditional Scots culture, Kilts were only worn by men, they had the colors of their clan on them, and it was their preserve (women of course wore skirts). Or at least that is my impression after reading Diana Gabaldon.....:)

The Scots are who I was thinking of, actually, since they (kilts) originated in the Scottish Highlands. And yes, it has the tartan of their clan (or did years ago. I guess some here in the US don't necessarily know what their tartan looks like).

I believe the way it is structured is also different now that I am thinking about it. There is a particular way it is made with the pleats.

Did you know that they make suits for men that have shorts, not pants now?

My point was that if the shorts were of a uniform material, and a uniform length, they are well....uniform (the other kind, as in all the same). That would still present a professional appearance.

I agree with you that there are some pretty snazzy shorts for the professional man,
and I'd like to think that this company will soon come to a compromise for all involved.

I read once that pants were actually more expensive to make & therefore they were typically only worn by upperclass men. They were considered better for hunting & riding because of the restrictiveness of wearing skirt-like bottoms. If you look around the world, especially in poorer countries you will notice most men wear a non-separated bottom (skirt). Also robe-type items (I.e. a SKIRT) are preferred in extreme heat areas such as desert or tropics
