In Alaska, we don't really have "spring". We have what is called break up. That means that the river that was frozen in ice "breaks" through and the flowing water can be seen. They even have a big lottery up here about when it's official. Last year, the guy who won threw a big party with his winnings.

Sometimes, it's really kind of neat to live in another place and see things in a different way. Yeah, it's still only 40 degrees F out there, but it's "warm" to Me.

They do that in parts of New England as well.

Here spring thaw means the snow pack melts and the rivers overflow, flooding houses and roads. Along with snow days, the local school system plans a certain number of flood days. If the buses can't get through, school is closed.

This is the first year in a verrrrry long time that we've actually had a spring, instead of our normal 1 week of moderate temps, immediately followed by bowel-loosening heat and humidity.

It's pretty neat. I just walked outside in a skirt and tank top and felt the grass under My feet. The earth is kind of "mushy" under My toes.

I don't know. I felt like I was kind of missing the "spring" experience. Just wanted to share Mine with you.

As it's only May, we still have sunset. It will happen roughly around 10:30. It will come back up sometime around 4:30. That means, sitting here right now, it will be a half hour from this post.

Well, this year in West Texas, it has been very fucking confusing.

Normal season change begins in late March and if follows this schedule:

Winter-spring-early summer-OMFG it is only May!

This year it has been Winter-early spring (Febuary)-winter-early summer-spring-winter-spring-early summer- who the fuck knows what season it is (this month so far.)

In other words, we had 80 degree days in February, 70's first week of March, 50's second week of March which ended with a freeze warning, 90's second week of march followed by one fucking confusing weather pattern.

March had two freezes, April 3, and May has had daytime highs in the fifties.

We also had 80's in march and a frost warning for next week.

Everybody that My other half has talked to has said this was the coldest/snowiest April they have seen in years. I'm kind of hoping that since the cold has lasted longer than usual that it will help to reduce the mosquito population.

I'm amazed that you have mosquitos in Alaska LadyPact I "just knew" that would be far too north for those little pests. I think they are already out in full force here with such a mild winter and wet spring that we've had.

Oh, we've got them, all right. They get to be a rather good size, too. We have lots of areas with random pools of water and that's an absolute breeding ground for the little buggers. You'd think they'd die out, considering the winters, but they are alive and well as soon as it warms up.

By the way, next time somebody is telling you a story about a "blood sucking female," ask them if they are talking about a mosquito. The males aren't responsible for mosquito bites. Only females do it.

I hope this will be the case LadyPact...

Cause in a different part of bavaria they are pested by an enormous amount of march bugs right now with many of them appearing as big black patches cause there are so damn many right now and they blame that unusual big population this year on this long winter...

Yeah, last month we had one day where it was 80 degrees and the very next day it was freezing outside and they were saying a possible chance of snow. It didn't snow but it was damn cold! How the hell does it go from 80 to 30 overnight?? UGH

This is the 7th time spring has meant making the trip from Arizona to Montana.  It's always been a time to visit our lovely national parks and monuments.  It always means giving up the sunny heat of Arizona for the coolness and rain of a typical Montana spring.

The only place Ive seen with mosquitos to compare to Alaska is in the mangroves in subtropical/tropical areas.

They will suck you dry.

I'm loving hearing about Alaska - thanks for sharing! Alaska is on my bucket list of places to visit. Everyone wants to go to Hawaii, but my two must-see places were Alaska and Maine, and I did Maine a few years ago.

A friend and I are talking about going. I want to see the Northern Lights but I'm not sure I'd survive the cold that time of year.

The cold is definitely an adjustment. However, as a summertime vacation, it can be a great experience.

There are RVs all over in the summer. Some drive up through Canada while others grab the ferry in Washington and spend a few days on the water rather than have all of their days driving. Beautiful scenery with both methods.
