ORIGINAL: defiantbadgirl I'm probably going to get a lot of ridicule for saying this (I'm used to it on here anyway), but I think sex offender lists should be abolished. When someone is on the list, their entire family is often bullied, harassed, and ostracized. Did the sex offender's parents, siblings, or children commit the crime? With the harassment they're forced to endure, they may as well have. I also think many if not most people have done things in the past (urinating outside, streaking, mooning, making out or having sex in a car, high school teens having sex, etc.) that if caught today, could have landed them on the sex offender list. If truly dangerous (violent offenders, those who stalk daycares and elementary schools), keep them locked up. IMO we don't need lists that hurt more innocent people than they help. I have a few sites I go to to see what kinda crime is in an area, some are for sex offenders but they say specifically what the charge was, such as "AGG SEXUAL ASSAULT CHILD age 13".. I personally think that crime stat websites are a tool to gauge how much crime there is in the area.. but lets face it, there is no area that is 100% SAFE.. its a matter of risk.. there is one gated community i know of with about 10,000 residents and it has only 4 sex offenders living in the community.. that is an amazingly low number for that amount of population, and other crime stats (robbery, B&E, rape, hit & run, murder, dui, etc) also reflect its safer than most communities, gated or not.. When people want to decide on what community they want to live in, there are tools they can use, such as school rating sites, walkscore, tax rates, etc and crime stat sites are (to me) just a tool in that same way.. When a person commits & is convicted of a crime it becomes a public record (just look at celebs that get charged for DUI, etc) and that never goes away, its public info forever, if someone doesnt want a crime they commited to be public info, then really, they shouldnt do it in the first place.. I do think that the minor "crimes" should not be on the registry tho, or perhaps only for repeat offences (for those that have a hard time learning the lesson).. jmo..
