Marini -> McDonald's Job Ad for cashier asks for college degree! (4/4/2013 9:50:29 PM)

Do you want fries with that shake?
Do they teach you to say that in those business management classes?

A McDonald's in Mass. posted an ad stating that they were looking for cashiers that had a bachelor's degree.

After being confronted, of course the owner stated that cashier's really don't have to have a college degree.

Hummm interesting.
With so many college graduates unemployed, this might be the opportunity they need.

Does anyone else feel this is the wave of the future, for many college graduates?

New York fast-food workers turn up heat on pay demands

Maybe to get the 15 an hour more BS degreed cashiers are needed?

Actually, tazzy if they raised the hourly wage to $15 an hour, they will automatically be competing with recent college grads.

If I was a college graduate having difficulty getting a job in my field, I would work at McD's until I could get what I want/or move into managemnt.

My first degree was tailored for banking... just about the time the S&L bailout happened. So, yes, I took whatever I could get while regrouping.

lol, I RARELY set food in McD's or any fast food place.
I went with my favorite young person to kill time, and I had some coffee.
This was a recently remodeled place in D.C. and it was a bit up market.
They even had a little coffee section similar to starbucks, with many selections.
I said, "Oh my!"

Maybe as McD's begins to upgrade their digs, you might need a degree to wipe off the tables soon.

unfortunately i think this is the wave of the future. college degrees are like high school diplomas were back 30 years ago. i got my degree in business. i quickly learned that a business degree is worth really nothing out in the marketplace. one has to specialize in some field...

I work in the employment field here in Michigan helping people find gainful and stable employment and you would be surprised at what I see. I showed my co-workers a listing one day that was posted in the Lansing State Journal where they were looking for a custodian to work part-time at 7.50$ per hour. The catch? They needed a Masters degree in any field, a drivers license, no criminal background, and 5 years experience.

midmich? You win, hand's down!
No-one will be able to top this one!
I might print this out to show people.

We don't have a job problem in this country~
Oh no!! There are thousands and thousands of jobs to go around.

Everything is jim dandy!

Peace

The sad reality is that it is an employers market right now. That is to say that they can set outrageous expectations for low end and unskilled labor positions and they can reasonably expect to get it because people are desperate for work; any work. You would be shocked at how many individuals are staying in shelters who have higher education. We routinely see people come to our agency where I work at who are homeless, have Bachelors, Masters, and occasionally Doctorate degrees and they cannot find work. Not because of mental health issues. Not because of addiction or physical disabilities. But because they lost their work, things snow balled financially for them, and wham they are suddenly homeless when their benefits run out and they have not been able to find work.

If you have your choice of either a person that has demonstrated enough discipline to have gained a degree or someone who hasn't demonstrated that yet, who would you choose? Many times, employers post that so they can get a better mix of applicants, and sometimes it's so they have an "reason" to not hire someone. If you don't have a college degree and still wow the employer, you may still be offered the job.

My ex is a HR manager.

These idiots are playing with fire. Many years ago, a company required a HS diploma for some entry level jobs and got sued. Because minorities had disproportionately lower rates of HS diplomas and the diploma itself was not a bona fide job requirement, it was ruled that it was de facto discrimination. Link.

Any decent lawyer could go after McDonalds' deep pockets here.

only if it is a corporate policy or corporate new. Otherwise, they are suck suing the franchise owner as it is an independant business. Still can sue, just a lot less to be made. In other words, not worth a shark's time.

fucktoyprincess -> RE: McDonald's Job Ad for cashier asks for college degree! (4/5/2013 10:01:02 AM)

This is why we need major education reform.

There are too many people getting college degrees - degrees that cost too much, and do not provide them with jobs afterwards.

We need appropriate technical and trades education.

All education should be subsidized by society so that people do not graduate with massive amounts of debt.

There also needs to be a societal shift in attitude that changes the way we view "blue-collar" jobs - all work is honest work. There is nothing wrong with working in the food industry provided one gets paid adequately.

There also needs to be a shift in expectations. We cannot continue to sustain a society where 90% of people expect post-college to have a secure, long-term desk job somewhere shuffling papers around. There is far less need for middle management type jobs today than in days past. People have to train for the jobs that exist - or create new industries and the new jobs to go with them. For many people, rather than going to college, learning technical skills or a trade would be a much more lucrative investment of their time and money. Getting a college degree at a lower tier school today does not make one competitive with the educated pool from elite schools, and also does not prepare you with technical skills or a trade that you can actually use to make a living. The problem is too many college grads who do not have the skills we actually need for the jobs that are available. There absolutely is a jobs/training mismatch issue.

erieangel -> RE: McDonald's Job Ad for cashier asks for college degree! (4/5/2013 6:18:48 PM)

I agree. When I was in school, they were phasing out the shop classes and home economics. Kids today aren't graduating from high school with any marketable skills to get a job and many aren't even graduating prepared for college--which is why so many colleges offer remedial programs.

I spent 2 years at the city vocational school where I studied nurse aid. It was called Twin Tech because the school ran 2 sessions--longer days but each session was only 3 days a week and one session went to school on Saturday (we were expected to work on our days off). They eliminated that and turned it into a regular 5-day school and did away with more than half the technical training programs.

I keep helping my clients look for jobs and keep hitting road blocks with ads that state "3 years experience" or "5 years experience required" for entry level maintenance or grounds keeping jobs or the like. It gets very discouraging when not everybody is cut out to work at McD's.

I'm not even gonna read this buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuullshit.....

McDonalds brings so many NOBODIES up through the ranks....it's pathetic.

I was a lowly nobody know nothing subcontractor in 1979 (in Seattle)...I think McDonalds had 150 stores at the time in Washington State....today they have, I don't know...500 or so....

Now, here's how I saw things back then:

McDonalds....hamburger flippers, fry throwers....losers.

And then I started working for them as a subcontractor....at night....2 in the morning kind of stuff....

And then I met some janitors...who showed me the binders....3 inches thick...several...on how to leave the building...they had 4 fucking binders, 3 inches thick on HOW TO LEAVE THE FUCKING BUILDING!!!!!

And then (to condense things) I met these same people....4 years later....managers....then 2 years later as half owners....then....3 years later as owners....

5 years later as owners of between 2 and 15 stores.

Wanna bitch about McDonald's pay?

Bitch about a chance to change your life.

McDonald's takes care of their own.

Fuck you....those of you that think McDonald's fucks their employee's....ask their employees (not the ones that got unemployment)....ask the one's that got a shot at the brass ring (and took it).

Ask the one's that took their shot....and grabbed it.

I'm just a contractor (and I've made a fuckload of money off of McDonald's....I ain't hurting) but I can tell you this....if you start out at the bottom, high school or PhD....you can become a millionaire in fewer than 5+ years working for McDonald's....if....you give a shit.

Fuck all these people that have some kind of concern that corporate America is destined to fuck you over.

Guess what?

Work hard....get rewards.

(It's that simple).

Do it....work it....give a shit.

On the flip side, some places won't hire somebody that's highly educated and experienced for a low-skill/low-wage position, because they know that person is looking for a better job and will quit the moment they find it. It's a waste of money hiring and training people and doing background check, drug test etc if they're only going to stick around for a month anyway.
