Fox... ugh... completely hypocritical... it refused to name the assailants at the time because they were minors. Ok, understandable. Then they turn around and on Monday, not Sunday when the live verdict came out, but the next day, they didnt even bother to bleep out the 16 year old girls name.

I would sue those fuckers.

As I posted on the other thread, CNN isnt the only one who journalistically raped this girl.

Following on that thought:

How The Media Took Sides In The Steubenville Rape Case

1. CNN discusses how the boys were “promising students.”
2. ABC News makes excuses for the rapist.
3. NBC News laments the boys’ “promising football careers.”
4. The Associated Press and USA Today stress that the victim was drunk.
5. Yahoo News says the victim has forced the town into an emotional situation.

I read the yahoo link, #5 on that list. And to be honest, what think progress reported is not the impression I got from that football editorial.

Really? I only had to read this far to agree with them:

The case of Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond, both 16, continues to polarize this town of almost 20,000 in eastern Ohio. From the crassness of the charges to the...

crass - without refinement, delicacy, or sensitivity; gross; obtuse; stupid

What? You are certain the voice of the Religious Right would side with the rapist? OH, you bought into that nonsense that the GOP are represented by men who war against women...yes! The charges are crass..... the abuse was crass.

polarize, polarise [ˈpəʊləˌraɪz]

Thats a far cry from accusing the victim of doing anything like forcing an emotional situation.

Thats how you see that. Its not how I see that article.

She was drunk. Thats a fact that is not disputed and became a sticking point for the whole trial. I think it would be a disservice to ignore that fact. I agree a female should be able to get drunk off her ass, pass out, and wake up completely untouched. And those boys didnt get a harsh enough sentence because they couldnt resist their baser urges. However, drinking had a lot to do with this whole case. And I am hoping to see further charges based upon that underage drinking, with hopes that the assistant coach gets charged with at least delinquency to minors.

But that article was critical of the whole atmosphere in that small town. At least that is how I read it.

What pisses me off more than anything is the fact that those kids passed video and texts and tweets and no one called the police. I hope every one of them is charged with failing to report a crime and some of them should be charged with distributing child pornography.

I feel for all the kids involved...their lives will never be the same after this. However, we should hold them accountable for failing their moral and legal obligations to help one of their peers instead of laughing behind her back. My parents would have my ass if I didn't help while someone else was being victimized.

Poor Jane Doe and the blogger who broke the story continue to receive death threats on Twitter.

As for CNN, I knew they were the lowest of the low already. This just confirmed it for me. While those asshats mourn the squandered potential of two sex offenders, I will mourn for Jane Doe and the thousands of rape survivors who suffer in silence.

I sent a message to CNN and the reporters about this travesty of journalism.

I continue to advocate either life sentences for rapists regardless of age or execution. I advocate the execution of child molesters.

As for this kind of reporting, I consider it a crime in and of itself and should be punished severely.

The wider problem is that some people confuse pandering with news.

Fox News has more then a few times done what some people did, outed the names of rape victims. As far as the religious right goes, need I mind you of the geniuses in the GOP who have made all these enlightened statements about rape? That, for example, a rape victim would never need abortion, since if a woman was really raped, they can't get pregnant because their body knows the difference (with the direct implication that if a woman got pregnant it is because she wanted to have sex), or other geniuses who say that there is such a thing as 'real' rape and 'non real rape' (really?).

Ever heard the morons on right wing talk radio about this case, who blame the victim and say since she was drunk and at the party, it was her fault, she was asking for it? Need I also tell you that the religious right and the GOP were strongly opposed to laws that made it possible for a husband to be charged with rape if he forced his wife to have sex, arguing that a husband couldn't be charged with rape because sex is part of the marital duty?

Liberals were also the ones who stopped lawyers from being able to use the defense that the woman was wearing provocative clothing, was in the wrong place, as a defense against getting raped (rape shield laws prevent that; conservatives were mostly opposed to those, too). There was a law recently introduced in congress dealing with violence against women, that the very conservative GOP members voted against, arguing it would allow the unfair prosecution of men, because it defined acts against women that today are given short shrift in court.......

Wonderful how the right wingers argument to everything is abortion, geel that just sways so many people *gag*. The GOP and the religious right who dominate them live in the middle ages, they think that rape is caused by lust, that if a man rapes a woman it is because she must have triggered it, and these are people promoting abstinence only sex ed then wondering why abortions happen......give it a rest, will you?

There are several threads about this just now and your opinion reflects My own with one exception. I believe it ties in here considering the reporting.

I don't feel a damn bit bad for the rapists. They chose to destroy their own lives and they don't deserve one tear. The fact that CNN and other networks tried to work that angle is completely sickening. They had choices. They made them. It wasn't an accident. That's the bottom line to Me.

The only part of any of this that I've seen accounted that was even what I would consider decent is one of the fathers stood up and admitted that he didn't parent his son properly. There should be a number of parents in that town admitting the same.

tweakabelle -> RE: Shame on CNN: Apologize for Steubenville coverage. (3/19/2013 11:34:36 PM)

The crimes committed at Steubenville are far from unique. In Australia we have regular incidences of such behaviour - a gang of (usually) drunken footballers or surfers* raping girls. The case of Leigh Leigh - this case formed the basis for the movie 'Blackrock' - is one particularly horrifying case in point. I have no doubt that the US and Australia are far from unique in this matter.

These incidents raise deeper questions about a culture that facilitates young jocks raping girls who are stupid enough to be around them during their drunken sprees. Many of these rapists are confused about having to account for their behaviour to the courts - often, they feel that they did nothing wrong, or, even worse, their behaviour merits social approval . It's almost a given that the adults around them (and sadly, other girls caught up in that particular environment) will participate in covering up the crimes and protecting those guilty of committing them.*

Is there something dark and menacing lurking below the surface of male sporting culture? Where do these boys get the notion that girls are fair game, just another trophy to be collected with no regard for her well being or feelings? Is there something that creates a feeling of impunity, allowing these young males to think what they are doing is OK, that they will 'get away with it'? To what extent are the adults involved responsible for this culture of impunity? Do we need to review the way boys we raise boys?

* The similarities between these reactions and those of homophobes caught for hate crimes are striking. What does that tell us?

ETA: I have re-posted this on the other Steubenville thread, as it seems more suited to discussing matters arising out of this shocking case.

Hi, Lauren. Welcome to the conversation. You'll find a diversity of conservative thinkers here, and you might do well to maybe pay attention to what we say, rather than simply telling us what our arguments are, and reciting the talking points and canned insults against those positions.

CNN made a deliberate choice in the angle they took with their coverage. Many here find that choice offensive. Some would rather talk about anything but.

LadyPact -> RE: Shame on CNN: Apologize for Steubenville coverage. (3/20/2013 12:10:05 AM)

Rich, I'll step up and take partial responsibility for that. I'm kind of disgusted with the whole darn thing and I think I might be crossing subjects.

Keep in mind, I'm not a big watcher of news until something of interest comes along. I don't consider a lot of what the 24 news networks consider "news". I find that most of them are filling time until something worth reporting comes along. (I can't tell you how many times I've literally told clip that what was being broadcasted wasn't news and to shut that crap off.)

I've been on several threads in the past few months with My comments regarding CNN. I don't have great things to say about Fox News, either. I base this on My opinion regarding the difference between "news" and "editorial/personal opinion". For the love of God, I'd really like to have a news source that is about facts and not commentary. I'm not going to get it. There's far too much yellow journalism and sensationalism and this particular piece of reporting (I use that term loosely) is some of the worst of the worst.

servantforuse -> RE: Shame on CNN: Apologize for Steubenville coverage. (3/20/2013 5:20:57 AM)

There will be a grand jury investigating the whole mess. Those who stood by and did nothing will have a long several months ahead of them. I'm willing to predict that more charges are forth coming.

Umm

Don`t listen to rich`s lecture...he`s the resident fox-news repeater here......not much there, otherwise.

Careful though,if you throw water on the irrationality or make a cogent reply.......you`ll be called a lover of authoritarianism or something else just as silly and disconnected from the conversation as that.

IMHO......if a rightie engages in xenophobic bigotry, questions the President`s citizenship, attacks our government as a matter of principal or supports abusing our troops(like in Iraq) but "claims" they`re pro-choice on abortion.......that does NOT constitute a diversity of thought....

That`s just plain rightie.

General reply:

Just to put a finer point on the dichotomy of the liberal/conservative split.....has anyone noticed that the outrage over this ugliness is primarily coming from the liberals.

Haven`t seen one conservative publication or journalist criticize fox,cnn or the other outlets who made similar comments

Guilt aside, the two boys are never going to get the help they need behind bars. I've seen too many of my peers enter the juvenile justice system and come out worse than they were before. I don't believe in throwing children in jail and throwing away the key. However, they should have considered that before raping Jane Doe, so my empathy goes only so far. You are absolutely right, LP.

It has been so difficult to follow this case. Hearing the comments from the folks who live in that town and some of my unenlightened friends talk about how young girls should "be more responsible because boys will be boys" makes my blood boil. No responsibility placed on the boys, none on their town, none on our society for putting athletes on a pedestal. Something's gotta give.
