I have recently been made aware of the cosplay culture.

People dressing as their favorite anime, sci fi, comic book, etc character for conventions.

I always thought it was Star Trek fans that had no life outside the series.

But I have since discovered that it is a whole sub culture around the world.

I have to ask, is it something akin to civil or revolutionary war re enacting, I used to do the civil war thing, going to events held on the actual battlefields.

But this seems altogether different, not based in reality, and much more expensive from what I have seen at the online costume suppliers.

Or is it that I am just too old to understand the younger generation?

There is LARP (live action role play) which is similar to war re-enacting, except that it's a made-up fantasy world that everyone participating agrees upon. They do battles, some have camp outs, and everyone is "in-character."

Cosplay (which means costume-play) is just dressing as a character from a show, movie, book, etc. It's just like Halloween, but you do it any time during the year. And I suppose there is less candy involved. Some people role-play also, acting just as the character would, but not everyone does this.

Dude, cos-play is nothing new. The furries have been doing it for decades.

Well... except the furries are even more bizarre.

Have I mentioned Comic Con...? Renaissance Faires?, Adrian Empire? Steam Punk? Yes Star Trek but this new JJ Abram...sucks...Spoke and Uhura . There is a Civil War group near me, I am a Union Officer from the 19th Massachusettes Infantry Regiment. And it has taken you this long to discover this?????

PS I am 60.

PSS I don't buy online, I get the pattern and have it custom made now that is expensive.

1) I have never been to a sci fi, comic or anime convention, since I really dont like crowds. Personally I think it has something to do with working private security at the Atlanta Olympics and having some nutjob set off a bomb 100 yards from where I was standing.

2) I was active in the civil war reenactors in Hendersonville NC, and many of us traveled to the various events at the battle fields.

3) The last time I dressed in a costume was for a bar sponsored Halloween party when I was 25 or so, and all I wore for that was my civil war uniform.

4) With my ptsd, and bipolar disorder, there are days when staying in the here and now is problematic, too many bad memories etc.

5) None of my favorite Sci Fi or anime characters have beards or they dont have a full head of hair, I aint shaving what I have had for the last 30 something years, or shaving my head.

6) And I doubt that anyone under the age of fifty would even recognize my all time favorite characters, either from 2001, Dune, or Forbidden Planet.

7) Now it might be tempting if there were groups that were extremophiles about Bogart movies, Alfred Hitchcock movies, and the rest of the suspense classics.

And I am not saying there is anything wrong with cosplay or stuff like that, I was just shocked at how large the sub culture was.

Lets not forget the LARPs...I did Vampire the Masquerade for months and Amgard for sword play.

Lizard loved my dagger as a toy.

My daughter had a couple of friends who did this when younger. They made their own costumes. One of them got into theater based on her cosplay experience.

My daughter and I would travel all over the place for the Cosplay events. She was into it bigtime. She would make elaborate costumes, she would buy all the anime and manga, met tons and tons of friends through it all.

The first time I took her to one I was a bit creeped out by it but over time as I got to know more about it, it actually seemed like fun and she was having a blast.

Now that she's 21 and working and college and all that she just does not have time for it now but she is still into the anime and manga and still has friends from it all that she keeps in contact with from it all.

While I'm not into cosplay myself I do appreciate those who enjoy it. Some people devote an enormous amount of time and creativity into their costumes.

Did I almost forget to mention that a lot of cosplayers are attractive women wearing very very little? How could that bother anyone?

It really depends on what convention. Anime cosplayers wouldn't be caught dead at a comic-con or sci-fi convention, or vice-versa. Each group is fiercely territorial and quite proud of their characters, costumes, and sub-groups. I have seen actual fistfights break out over small things such as two people coming as the same character or one group of friends making fun of a rival's costume.

As for cost, it ranges from a few bucks for pvc pipe and foam to make a Link sword, to thousands of dollars in a hand made fully articulated Master Chief Spartan Suit

Lizard special orders her costumes with her measurements and when they arrive, usually they are too big (must be using different measurements in another country). Luckily she lives near a seamstress that she does piecework for and gets it more tailor-made. I usually stay up in the hotel room and she would be running around. I did buy a pass last year and dared her to enter the cos-play contest. No winner but she had fun.

Some of the groups I belong to are more historical, about 3 times in the year we go to schools in costume to educate the kids. Then we have an event held at a local lodge each year to educate people on the Vestors...what is more commonly called Vikings. In Southern California we do theme parks, but Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm etc have become expensive so Renaissance Faires provided a more cost effective event for families. A side benefit is the money some of these events put into the local economy, otherwise taxes would have to raised, one of the reasons Comic-Con is so welcomed in San Diego.

I watch some anime, ghost in the shell, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis.

I watch sci fi, star trek, firefly, babylon 5, and a lot of old sci fi classics, 2001, Forbidden Planet among others.

I read a lot of sci fi, Asmov, Clarke, Drake, Heinlein. and others.

But since most anime is based in sci fi or fantasy, why is there such a line between the people who go to the conventions?

I have actually met people who claim to be sci fi fans and have no clue as to what I am talking about when I start talking about 2001 or Forbidden Planet.
