ORIGINAL: jlf1961 I watch some anime, ghost in the shell, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis. I watch sci fi, star trek, firefly, babylon 5, and a lot of old sci fi classics, 2001, Forbidden Planet among others. I read a lot of sci fi, Asmov, Clarke, Drake, Heinlein. and others. But since most anime is based in sci fi or fantasy, why is there such a line between the people who go to the conventions? Just the same as there is New York Theatre and there is L.A. Theatre. But try to ask an actor which one is better and you will start a catfight. People like their genres, and they get really attached to them, micro-classify them. You know Star Trek... how many books have they published just on the technical inner workings of the Enterprise. How many people will get into fist fights over whether jeffries tube 9 on deck 23 turns left or right. Its the same for anime, comics, sci-fi, horror, magic the gathering, hell anything the have a convention for
