About 3 years ago, my daughter and her friends were old enough to drive and go off on their own to the cosplay. Let me just say after seeing the photos she brought back of her costume and that of her friends, I was glad I was not there. OMG. Had I know she was wearing that costume I would have been begging and pleading with her to make another.

ETA: The reason they are territorial is that Anime is seen as more mmmm.....elegant, unique, modern. It comes from Japan and the cosplayers feel they put more work in and are just more dedicated. They even have a special name for dedicated fans: Otakus. They don't like the comic and sci-fi fans because they see them as geeks, nerds, old fashioned and most who attend such events are usually much older than those at cosplay.

I'm mostly a gamer and that disticntion seems absent at gamer cons. Saturday at GenCon, costume contest day, is a pretty amazing mix of genres.

Just the same as there is New York Theatre and there is L.A. Theatre. But try to ask an actor which one is better and you will start a catfight. People like their genres, and they get really attached to them, micro-classify them. You know Star Trek... how many books have they published just on the technical inner workings of the Enterprise. How many people will get into fist fights over whether jeffries tube 9 on deck 23 turns left or right. Its the same for anime, comics, sci-fi, horror, magic the gathering, hell anything the have a convention for

This was the creepy thing at the cosplay conventions. When she was too young to go by herself yet, I would walk around for awhile with her and just when I thought it was ok for me to leave her alone so I could go back to the hotel or go catch a movie or whatever, I'd see these 50 year old men wandering around ogling the under the legal limit girls and I'd start freaking out. Yup, instead I stuck to her like glue until she started yelling at me and we started arguing.

Then we would compromise and I would make her call me on her phone like every hour lol. There were times I'd even sneak around to watch her without her knowing.

Hey, I'm a mom. I'm allowed to be paranoid.

Forbidden Planet!..When Worlds Collide, The Day the Earth Stood Still, (I don't mean that horrible remake with Keanu Reeves) Now that is Sci Fi!! It was actually pretty faithful. Specially compared to that David Lynch disaster.

nothing beats the books.

I still can't wait until they make a movie out of

This comment is not meant to offend. I say that because some people here are so incredibly sensitive if You question them or disagree with them and can get reaaaaallllllly nasty.... so here goes.

I have seen Civil War re-enactments, in particular at Gettysburg, and frankly I think it borders on the absurd to say they are based in reality. When you see 20 guys on one side firing their muskets at 20 guys on the other side it certainly does not represent the reality of The Civil War, and I would venture to suggest that it is almost insulting to those who lost their lives. For me, (and I am English btw, but was very moved by my visit to Gettysburg), what is important in preserving the memory of The Civil War is surely the tragedy of the huge cost in human lives.

Considering the butcher job they did on the story line, and no one has made a decent version of the Dune series since then, it was a poor reflection on the work of Herbert.

There is no way to do Dune in one showing, it would have to be broke up into a number of 3 hour features. Hell if they made a tv series on the books, they would have a good 12 to 20 seasons worth of work.

I can say for me the Civil War group I belong to has standards and to be a member you have to pass probation and review. This is the same with Adria which I am current a member of the board. Basically anyone who is considering on joining is on a 90 day probation period. At the end of the period if they still wish to join they must come up with a "persona". The persona is based on what the person has learned about what is was like to live in that time period. They must create a name using that time period. They can not say they are the son of a Plantation Owner etc..we look for something more toward what happened not Gone with the Wind. Then we look at their custome, and equipment. In many cases they don't come in as a General...more a private and work their way up. In Adria more of a lower class and not the illegment son or daughter some of King or Queen, that and wearing polyster in my view gets you kicked out.

Being English dom2ownbio I understand your own Civil War is very popular.

Status: offline 		My sister's boyfriend is on the board of a civil reenactment group in Gettysburg and like Nosathro mentioned, they are very strict on everything. Once upon a time, the History Channel was making a reality show of the Civil War re-enactors and his organization was the group they were going to follow. Unfortunately it never made it on air though. As for it being an insult, I've been to a couple of his gatherings to watch and there is always a prayer and silent time to remember those who fell on both sides. They actually use it to educate others about the war and how many died and what took place. They go around to schools and all kinds of places to teach.
