Shahna -> Old threads (2/15/2013 8:05:37 PM)

Why exactly do so many people get upset when someone posts on an old thread? Isn't discussion the whole point of a forum???
Why I find a topic that particularly interests me, I read it from end to end. I go through every post looking for new information, and new points of view- and since it is a forum- I post my views whenever I feel like it. So whats the deal? I am astounded by how many threads I have seen on this forum, where someone expresses their views, and then a bunch of other people pop up to say they shouldn't be allowed to because the post is too old. Then the thread is closed. You're kidding me right?
So new information/expressions are frowned upon if the original topic was brought up too long ago- maybe that is why this forum is a complete mess.

OsideGirl -> RE: Old threads (2/15/2013 8:11:33 PM)

For two reasons:

1) The OP is long gone, there's no point in giving them a response.

2) Per the guidelines of this forum, the powers that be have stated that they do not want threads older than three months resurrected. They clearly state that if you wish to contribute, start a new thread with a link to the old thread and then feel free to make your comment.

As for the last statement, if you don't like the forums, you don't have to stay. Feel free to go elsewhere if the rules here bother you.

Actually, it's not a complete mess, but you wouldn't know that, having just joined a whole day ago. My advice to you -- read a bit, absorb the wealth of resources and information here before writing it off. You may end up liking it, you never know.

LadyPact -> RE: Old threads (2/15/2013 8:47:08 PM)

Do you talk to somebody years after they've left the room?

New information or opinions aren't discouraged here. Please read the second (number two) comment that Oside gave. That's the way the Mods want it done so that is the way that is acceptable.

littlewonder -> RE: Old threads (2/15/2013 9:54:58 PM)

Let's see...when was the site created? early 2000 maybe? Can't exactly remember, but over 10 years of posts at least. Why not go back the the very first post ever on here. I'm sure they'll love you for that.

If you have a topic to discuss, just start a new one. The people who wrote the old threads most likely is not even around here anymore and even if they are they probably don't even remember starting that thread or their problem has been solved by now. People change, people fix their problems, get new jobs, have children, families, etc....

So just start another. I hate reading old threads just because it feels like I'm talking to ghosts, people I haven't seen in forever and are no longer here, except remnants of their shells.

Yep, this. Say you read a 9 year old thread about, say, a fetish for toothbrushing, and someone made an interesting comment which you're dying to reply to. Copy it into a new thread, with a link and say 'I saw this on a new thread and it made me think/wonder... what do you think?'

Voila.

The point of a thread is discussion and interaction - usually in an old thread most posters have moved on so you can't discuss or interact.

Shahna -> RE: Old threads (2/16/2013 8:48:28 AM)

Thanks guys, most of you actually posted thoughtful/helpful/friendly responses.
There's one negative comment I have to respond to though- I don't need you to tell me to read a fucking comment. If you can't come up with your own shit to say- don't bother riding on someone elses post. Or is that more of the masturbation I just heard about? Please don't be stupid, or act like I am.
Also- I really wish I had a fetish for toothbrushing- just because of how much it would weird out my boyfriend. I think I will pretend to tonight.

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: Old threads (2/16/2013 9:31:33 AM)

Huh? Was that aimed at me? Because quoting someone's post to agree or add to it is pretty standard message board behaviour and if it upsets you, you'll probably find every thread upsetting.

Edit: re-reading the thread I think it was aimed at someone else, but the comment was completely innocuous and did not warrant your outburst.

Aileen1968 -> RE: Old threads (2/16/2013 9:34:31 AM)

Nah. I think she was bitching about LadyPact.
This should be fun....

[ED for typo]

Woot!

So you're looking for a gal to come an join you and your man eh?

You appreciate how rare they are?

So... I wonder what a single fem looking for a couple is going to think when she reads this...

Is she going to think "Oh, way to go... that's a really mature approach, I think she'd make a fucking awesome Domme for me!"

Or is there a possibility that she's going to think "What an obnoxious, childish little asshat!"

What do you think?

The reasons tie into a group of regulars in this place and how they think they practically own the joint.

You'll notice two things. If someone comes on and asks a question, they'll almost invariably be told - unless they're young and cute or old and a femdom - to use the search feature. This is because the usual suspects here have decided that because THEY have discussed a particular topic to death, that no-one else is entitled to discuss the topic either.

Alternatively, if someone new DOES use the search feature, then finds a thread discussing the topic and tries to expand upon it, they'll be yelled at by the same thundercunts for resurrecting an old thread.

This is despite the fact that these people actually have nothing to say themselves and these forums stagnate like a fetid pond unless someone like myself stirs things up and makes them interesting.

Basically there's a cabal of regulars with empty lives who get off on being a bunch of self-righteous cunts with the moderators' home numbers on speed-dial in case they get their ass handed to them.

I keep pointing out that regulars who don't want to read, view or answer a topic have the option of - oh, I dunno - shutting the fuck up and instead reading another of the many scintillating threads in which they mutually masturbate each other in public. ("Oh, you're so wonderful. No, YOU'RE so wonderful. Oh no, you're so pretty." etc. etc.)

The various justifications they come up with are mere excuses for their cunty behaviour and desperate need to parade their witless personalities in public whenever possible. Ignore them and start a thread on whatever damn topic you like. Nobody's shoving their nose into the screen and forcing them to read it.
You know, for somebody I'd consider a fairly intelligent man, you seem to have this new habit of regurgitating things that you've heard from a rather airheaded twatwaffle on another site.

The reason they don't want old threads (very specifically old threads, not old topics) resurrected is because when it becomes a habit done by multiple people, it pushes the current topics off of the front page of the board. That means that the person who comes along and asks a new question quickly gets pushed back to page two obscurity where they don't obtain the help they would like to receive or the information that they would like to know.

It's actually pretty rare for forum participants to flip through even to the second or third page of any given board to see if they are asking the same question as someone did a week ago. They used to redirect posters to a current thread on the same topic if somebody was basically doing a repeat of a thread that was already in progress. I'd actually like to see that come back.

Nah, no particular fun. I probably should have linked where the Administration had already said it first to begin with. If more people would read that stuff, they would understand what the issue was in the first place.

dcnovice -> RE: Old threads (2/16/2013 10:17:44 AM)

FR

One factor that we may be overlooking is that folks tend not to resurrect single necro-threads. What seems to happen, at least ime, is that a newby comes along and (with admirable but misplaced enthusiasm) adds his or her bit to a dozen or so threads, thereby wiping the whole conversational plate clean. That irks regular posters, who then can't find the threads they were following.

myotherself -> RE: Old threads (2/16/2013 10:52:07 AM)

...and then hopefully the new person realises they've made a minor faux pas, says 'oops, sorry!' and continues on to be a valuable member of the messageboards. [:)]

OsideGirl -> RE: Old threads (2/16/2013 11:12:14 AM)

I would also hope that newcomers realize that expecting an established forum to change to suit them is unreasonable. If I go to a restaurant and don't like the clientele, I don't stand there telling the patrons that they should change. I go somewhere else that is more suited to my style.

myotherself -> RE: Old threads (2/16/2013 11:54:05 AM)

Good point, well made Oside [:D]

TNDommeK -> RE: Old threads (2/16/2013 12:51:51 PM)

Hahahahaha^^^^

They are entertaining. It's good to have comic relief from time to time.
