Lately I have read quite a few articles about children aged 7-9 being handcuffed by the police, after the staff called them. Latest example: Cops handcuff and interrogate boy, 7, for hours over missing $5: family http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/cops_are_cuff_guys_with_kid_eaRQ39892kXQndMJkDgY9J I suppose the police will have to come if they are called, but why put small children in handcuffs, and why call the police in the first place? Other instances have been throwing a tantrum or arguing with other children, things teachers should be able to handle. Comments?

While handcuffs are an overreaction by police, the ridiculousness of filing a $250 million lawsuit is beyond belief. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that the Mom was thinking "paydirt" from the time she showed up. Exactly why she insisted on a picture being taken with the poor kid handcuffed to the wall. Not "get My kid out of those things" or tearing the police a new one. Instead, she went straight for documentation. Dear ole Mom skips the fact that it took her over four hours to get to the school before the boy was taken to the precinct.

I don't know if the same attitude was behind this, but when my dad was the chief at his station (London Metropolitan) his standard tactic in the case of really out-of-order children, when the police were called in by parents or teachers, was to send the largest Pc they had to the kid's home or school to be 'intimidating'. Lots of barks, gruff noises and threats of arrest - though no more. This could have been similar to the tactic involved here - though, if it was, I'd say it went a fair bit over the top.

From the article: "School officials said the incident took place off school grounds and referred questions to the NYPD." It appears to have nothing to do with the school. It doesn't say who placed the 911 call. I work with someone who is an ex-cop. He does not paint a flattering portrait of his ex-peers. The story wasn't terribly surprising to me. I hope the family gets a nice settlement. Totally uncalled for.

The story is outrageous on many levels. 10 hour interrogation? $250 million? Anyone in the area seen more on the local news? I'd be interested to see more developments and how this plays out.

It was also reported that the kid punched the victim to get the money, that is violence and he was charged with robbery, that is the justification...and I see nothing wrong with it. I know it seems outrageous but police do have the right to protect themselves and others. When I worked in Juvneile Hall we handcuffed kids younger then this kid when we took them across the street to the court.

It may have been an overreaction, but maybe they were trying to scare the kid out of misbehaving in the future. From the article it seems like this isn't the first time the child has been involved in bullying others. I think you are right about the mom thinking she has hit pay dirt. With the attitude that she is entitled to something for nothing it does not surprise me a bit that the kid is having problems.

everybody seems to know their rights ( ie money) but very few seem to know their responsibilities ( good parenting)

The piece said the money was dropped and scooped up by someone else,then a confused scuffle followed..... Yeah.....normal kid playground stuff. A ten hour interrogation....... over 5 bucks?[8\|] Oh Jesus.....

That anyone would think that terrorizing a 7y/o this way is OK.....NO MATTER WHAT the circumstances were...... is a reflection of how sick and depraved some parts off our society have become.

I hope he never shoplifts a pack of gum at Wal Mart - they'll get out the Uzi. Seriously, Wal Mart not far from us had a 4 year old arrested once. This kid needs some discipline. I even think that there are times when a nice big tall police officer coming to have a stern talk with a kid is a good idea. But the handcuffs and hours of interrogation seem a bit over the top. That being said....I am sure Mom is already picking out the color for her new Cadillac.

First of all...it's a well known fact that the 7 - 9 year old's are the worst offenders....in damn near every crime stat. Secondly....if you're gonna do the crime....be prepared...bring a ten spot and offer to give change. (Pretty damned simple if you ask me).
