As for comparison....even the blue haired population of Florida are expert drivers compared to the morons in that video.

You would think so, wouldn't you?

Quite a few of the clips from the second video are from Poland which in places can be just as bad as in Russia.

I admit that I failed my driving test in the UK but passed on the second attempt in Poland. It was the same as the newer UK tests but earlier, back in 1996. I didn't pass the first time because the Moskvitch I was doing the manouevres part in (separate from the town driving) was so old the gearbox kept sticking and the examiner took offence to me calling it a heap of junk.

Second time round I passed. I remember my last lesson prior to the test. I had an older instructor and a Fiat 126p (Polski Fiat) and despite the fact that it was pouring with torrential rain and getting dark (an evening lesson in May) we went ahead.

I took a wrong turning and didn't think about it when the instructor said that he had never seen this street before. It wasn't until we had passed a duck pond, flower bed and people walking their dogs on the grass that my instructor started swearing profusely. I had turned into a public park and was driving along the pathway.

Things took a turn for the worse when my instructor demanded that I immediately leave the park and return to the streets. I swung a sharp left and started driving first across the grass towards the edge of the park, then through the trees in the wooded area.

The car was bouncing up and down because of the bumps and I kept having to swerve to avoid the trees. I don't think I've heard anybody swear as much as that driving instructor who also kept crying out 'My heart! My heart!' between swear words, some I'd never heard before. Finally the car rolled down a bank onto the pavement and I turned into the road stopping by a bus stop. The instructor wished me lots of luck saying words to the effect that I needed a bloody miracle and that I would be the last ever Brit he taught.

However I can attest that some of the driving you see in both videos is plausible and i even recognize some of the roads in the second video, particular the main A2 trunk road which runs through Poland between germany and Belarus. Every year in Poznan, a city in the west where I lived during the early 1990's you'd get a story of some articulated lorry, usually a Russian TIR turning up in someone's living room and demolishing half of their house. The house was always on the main A2 trunk road, which is still a single lane carriageway in both directions with space on the right to swerve if someone coming from the opposite direction is overtaking. In both Poznan and Warsaw I've seen car drivers trying to force trams to swerve to get out of the way. They always seem to look so surprised when the tram doesn't swerve and they're standing beside a damaged car waiting for the police.

In my opinion the atrocious driving in Russia is the consequence of the Russian population not having sufficiently evolved within the Christian reproductive algorithm, as Christianity arrived late in that territory.

Alternatively, I see various possible leading causes for the mishaps on Russian roads:
1. They have roads. If they did not have roads, there would be no such mishaps on Russian roads at all.
2. They have cars. If they did not have cars, there would be no such mishaps on Russian roads at all either.
3. They either have no eye tests, or their eye tests suck.
4. It is due to the wodka: they use the tyres of their cars to brew wodka.
5. They have their eyes on the camcorders in their car instead of on the traffic and on the road.
6. Russian is such a long worded language that their thoughts take up so much room that they have no brain capacity to spare to drive competently and safely.
7. Russians like to drive cross country and to them roads are just coincidentally flat areas of the ground.

Status: offline 		The video from Russia was funny. I haven't laughed out loud like that in quite a while. If you put a dash cam in my ride the video would be very boring but the audio would be atrocious. I am not verbally kind to my fellow drivers.

I don't think I've ever seen anything as bad in the video, although we have our share of car crashes here, too.

Some statistics relevant to the topic. The U.S. had more total vehicle deaths than Russia, but Russia had a higher death rate per 100,000 vehicles. The death rate per 100,000 vehicles in the UK is less than half of what it is in the U.S.

People are crazy out on the roads. The video shows some pretty horrid examples, though. In some cases, it didn't seem like it was the driver's fault, such as where a tree branch suddenly drops down in front of a car.

Most of what I see when I'm driving are people who just aren't paying attention. Either they're distracted by their cellphones/texting or they're just not watching what they're doing when they drive.

A lot of people don't use their turn signal either. That always tends to bug me, along with those who don't turn off their turn signal after they've made their turn.

Then there are people who drive too slow in the fast lane. Sometimes, on the Interstate in sections where the speed limit is 75, I see a whole bunch of traffic stuck behind two vehicles where one is going 60 and the passing vehicle is going 61. Then there's a whole clump of vehicles behind them because they'd rather be going the speed limit of 75.

I once got stuck behind some big RV (as big as a Greyhound bus) towing an SUV. It was on a two-lane road, and I just couldn't get the opportunity to pass - or when I did - he would start speeding up and preventing me from passing. Finally, we got to a rather long hill where there was a temporary passing lane, and I got my opportunity to pass, since he couldn't accelerate uphill as fast as I could. He was trying, though. He was desperately trying to stay in front of me, just so he could slow me down.

Status: offline 		Fun thread, Stella. I watched the video over my coffee yesterday morning, and, even though my commute is over a wide open stretch of straight line freeway, found myself just a bit paranoid on the drive. Just for spice, we'd had an early morning rain, and the roads were wet.

While Rule offered some interesting theories, I think we can keep our feet a bit more on the ground, in terms of explaining why it is so bad. First, and probably foremost, is that under the miseries and deprivations of a socialist/communist paradise (c'mon, you didn't think I would skip the easy shot at that idiotic sociopolitical system, did you?) the people simply didn't grow up in an automotive culture. I've seen similar sorts of video (more from traffic cameras than on the dash) from China, where private vehicle ownership is a recent social development.

Those of us blessed to grow up in systems that promote prosperity and individual liberty, with the car as a prime expression of that, have been on the roads our whole lives. We have a foundation of knowledge, and an almost instinctive grasp of the general rules of the road. We may choose to ignore them from time to time, but they are a part of our culture. We learn our driving skills from people with a lifetime of experience, and the overwhelming majority of drivers possess the basic competency to safely go from point A to point B. Fewer ignorant asshats = fewer crashes.

Right along with the ingrained basic knowledge of the driving fundamentals, comes the awareness that cars require maintenance. Whether you grew up helping daddy change the oil and spark plugs, or just hearing Aunt Beula bitch about how badly she getting fucked over for a brake job, and watched the roadside tire repair guy torque the lug nuts with the tire back on the ground, we pretty much all know that cars need more than just gas. I couldn't believe how many wheels were flying off the cars and trucks in the video. I was also struck by the number of hydroplaning incidents, and I'd be willing to bet bald tires were a big contributing factor in those. Obviously, they can't coin check their tread quality against Abe Lincoln's hair on a penny, but I bet the same trick would work with the blotch on Gorbachev's forehead, or something, if they knew to do it.

As for here, I live in a flat, sprawling, low density area. Our streets are wide and straight, and generally well maintained. Speed limits along the avenues through our cities are as high as 60 mph. Congestion is restricted to a few bad intersections, and a couple areas of moronic urban planning. The dangers are fucktards, being stupid at those speeds. Get out of the cities, and our desert roads are narrower, but still straight and flat. Again, the biggest danger (aside from the odd flash flood) is some fucktard blowing a stop sign. The nearby mountain and canyon roads are a playground for those who enjoy a good car, on a twisty road, but do offer those same fucktards ample opportunities to tumble a few hundred feet to the bottom of a cliff, or hit a tree from understeer.

Status: offline 		I live in Baltimore, MD. Allstate Insurance data says we are the number 2 worst drivers in America. Washington, DC is number one which is only about 45 mins from here and they both commute back and forth between the two cities.

Believe me, I'm not surprised. Master and I comment on the drivers all the time here.

Not a requirement, but due to various circumstances in Russia, they are quite popular. In short, it's due to rampant careless driving, scams, corruption, and road related violence. Dashcams provide for a relatively cheap way for the driver to prove what he says happened actually happened.

Status: offline 		The Man wants a dash cam for his cars. Two weeks ago a drunk kid without a license was stopped dead in the middle of the street. The step-daughter had a nondrinking friend as her designated driver. They flashed their lights at the drunk who slammed his car into reverse and hit the gas before fleeing the scene with the passenger who was suffering from alcohol poisoning. She kept passing out and he kept picking her up and dropping her.

The insurance company kept saying it was the step-daughter's fault, they refused to admit the other car was also insured by them, and they wouldn't get the police report. He got the policy number of the other car from the DMV and he called the police and got the police report. They still won't call him back and talk about totalling out the car though. They now say they can't talk about totalling out the car until they decide if the drunk passenger's injuries were from the accident or from being dragged.

As far as us, horse aren't that common. Most people keep their fences in good order. But the highest cause of death here is from car/deer interactions. People want to swerve to avoid the deer which puts you into a ditch, a tree, etc. Hit the brakes but hit them straight on and you'll survive the accident.
