Wolves I have known were notoriously lazy, to the point I could use one of them as a pillow laying in the meadow while poly did the tractor thing. Only had 5 acre range so at most he would patrol 3 hours a day then sleep in the sun all day. But then again male wolves are notoriously lazy with females raising young, hunting & keeping the pack in order.

Best damn dog I ever had was 1/2 wolf, 1/2 akita. I took him from mama and the littermates at 8 weeks, and kept him with me basically 24/7 for months. He was brilliant smart, and the most incredible watchdog anyone who encountered him had ever met. From about 6 months, he took great offense to wearing a leash, and just heeled when he was told to, and stuck close enough when I told him to go on. He would let go of another dog in a fight at a single word, and take a treat from the hand of a toddler using only his tongue.

We lost him a few years back, and if I keep going, I'll probably start to bawl.

We still have the cat he raised from a kitten. She's fucking scary.

Status: offline 		Defiant, I think what you may be referring to is an external scent glad at the base of the tail called the tail gland, stud tail, violet gland or supracaudal gland and is on both male and female cats and dogs.

Status: offline 		We have wolves here on the mountains. The local farmers are given government grants to buy Malmutes. They guard the sheep round here but I have never heard one howling. The problem is, they see all other dogs as wolves and will attack and even kill a dog that is being walked too close to its flock.
I like to see the Malmutes with their flocks. In France its been a tradition to use these dogs for many hundreds of years. I have a healthy respect for them and so keep my distance.

Mastiff isn't a herd guardian either. Anatolian shepards dog is my fave, great pyr, kangle, akbash, llamas & donkeys are commonly used as guardians. Heelers, aussies & boarder collies for moving them
