The debt ceiling vote is a stupid recurring thing. Congress passes spending bills and budgets that require borrowing beyond the statutory limit and then have to seperately vote to raise the limit. It is duplicated effort and arguably not even actually required. Congress authorizes the amount to be spent which effectively means they authorize a level of borrowing that corresponds to that.

And just who said this?

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.
...
And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on.

Why, our President on the Senate floor March 16, 2006. And he wants authority for unilateral debt increases.

Come on let's twist again like we did last summer
Yea, let's twist again like we did last year
Do you remember when things were really hummin'
Yea, let's twist again, twistin' time is here

Yeah round 'n around 'n up 'n down we go again
Oh baby make me know you love me so then
Come on let's twist again like we did last summer
Yea, let's twist again, twistin' time is here

And, what was said, was that technically he hasn't won YET (and, searching4mysir even all-cap'ed YET, most likely implying that it is going to happen). Since the Electoral College elector's have yet to have their votes tallied according to the rules, Obama is not the next President of the US. At no point did searching imply that he might not be the next one, only that, according to the rules, he hasn't won it yet.

And isnt there a call for the electorate to ban together to keep Obama from becoming President?

So, while you may want to hinge on the fact that she said... YET. Many are saying yet with the hopes that it simply wont happen, that it can be stopped. LOL

Like I said...

Keep dreaming

But, as Ron points out, this has nothing to do with the thread. So, enough derail. [;)]

OK. Let's not raise the debt ceiling at all. No more federal spending through next September. Shut down the entire military. No more CIA, FBI etc. Lock the gates of the National Parks. Absolutely no maintenance of the Interstate Highways, no matter what happens. Cease all federal aid to the areas trying to recover from Sandy. No FAA so that's the end of the entire airline industry. No customs inspectors so drugs, terrorists and god knows what else comes in through our ports. No Border Patrol so illegal immigrants come across the borders freely. The US defaults on all of its debt so the global economy melts down into a depression that will take decades or a world war to fix. Seniors receive no more SS checks, leaving most seniors without enough income to live on.

Does that really seem like a good idea to you?

Ahh..pick one point..now can you tell me how many times with a GOP President the GOP have not signed a budget from a GOP President where they cared about the debt?? Cause according to the GOP GOD Deficits do not matter, to quote RR, or GWB no as the war was all borrowed???

If so concerned about debt...why support system that has failed??

Unbelievable. So you're saying the federal government cannot operate within its means? That to operate it needs more via added debt? You're admitting that, as Obama said in 2006, Obama, like Bush prior to him, is leadership failure?

No. I'm saying that the federal government cannot simply cease operations in the middle of a fiscal year because a bunch of Ayn Rand cultists don't understand how economics works.

And still hasnt got a fucking thing to do with the GOPs response to a budget proposal.

Sorry, Ron, but why did you pick me out on this one? I wasn't the first to go down this road. Neither was I the second. But, I get called out on the carpet.
