We've had this discussion before, and we narrowed it down. We said Santa is one or more of the following:

Santa is:
childlike wonder/innocence
dreams
faith
idealism
mythology/folklore
a coming of age experience
a parental archetype
a model for understanding reality
the gift of stories and shared experiences
an actual man living with elves at the North Pole
evidence of the subjective nature of reality
a controversial political topic
a lie
a fantasy/delusion
just one of the hundreds of lies society tells children
just one of the hundreds of truths society tells children
a symbol of greed and capitolism
a symbol of peer pressure
a copout by parents who can't think or act for themselves
a religious symbol
a symbol of the tension between religions
a symbol of the tension between classes
an insulation from unpleasant realities
a poison (perhaps the opiate of the masses?)

So... what is Santa to you?

Santa to me is the big giant initial my mom STILL puts on the presents for me and for my brother, just like "Santa" did when we were kids :)

If you are ten or under then Santa is a real person who lives at 1 Reindeer Lane, North Pole.  Don't worry about what others say. 

If you are over ten, then Santa is the giving spirit of Christmas. The spirit of Santa is in us all and as long as we remember what Christmas is really about, then yes he is real.

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Santa is me and the hubs to the girls, and the dogs,lol. But I also think Santa is a great childhood memory. And even though I am 32 years old, I still love Santa!!

At a church I once went to a lady pointed out that when you rearrange the letters, Santa spells Satan....

So apparently Santa is the devil and wants to suck out your brains and make you his ho ho ho

Well Yes, Virgina there is a Santa Claus.

Just because we don't see him, just because "He doesn't exist" doesn't make him any less real. Because as long as the spirit of giving and kindness exist there has to be Santa.

A Bishop and Saint

Nicholas grew to be a well-loved Christian leader and was eventually voted the Bishop of Myra, a port city that the apostle Paul had previously visited (Acts 27:5-6). Nicholas reportedly also traveled to the legendary Council of Nicaea, where he helped defend the deity of Jesus Christ in A.D. 325.

Following his death on December 6, 343, he was canonized as a saint. The anniversary of his death became the St. Nicholas holiday when gifts were given in his memory. He remained a very popular saint among Catholic and Orthodox Christians, with some two thousand churches named after him. The holiday in his honor eventually merged with Christmas, since they were celebrated within weeks of one another.


Today his kindness, faith and charity are ideals that we share on this day of the year that we also celebrate on the day we celebrate as the birth of Jesus who also taught to be kind, faithful and give charity to our fellow man. Even though Jesus may not have been God, even though he may not have been born on December 25th, what is so wrong about celebrating the life of a man who taught us how to live a life of peace? The same goes for Santa. Why not repeat his acts to show our love for one another?
