So. . . any suggestions on what to get my mother for Christmas?

She has clothes, shoes, jewelry, and cookware . . . accoutrements for the house galore. Given that. . . any ideas?

Read a book aloud with each other. Take a class in something both of you are interested in. Gratitude you still have each other to spend time with.

Have a star named after her.

Make a scrap book.. if you have children, have each of them write her a letter, put it in a photo album surrounded by pictures. Dig into her past and put special episodes of her life into the scrap book via newspaper clippings of the day she was born, her wedding day, anniversary and pics from Christmas past.. things like that.

Love hlen's idea of time. You can make up a coupon book for her giving her specific allotments of time to spend with you.. maybe getting mani/pedi's together (your treat!), going to movies, the library, museum or a coffee chats. Most cities have loads of freebie stuff to enjoy so if you're on a budget you can incorporate that free Bard in the Park Fest or the $2 movie date night among the coupons.

If you are separated by a great distance and it isn't feasible to spend time together then maybe a plane ticket out to visit you and the family would be a gift she would appreciate.

Hot air balloon rides are a blast and mini-trips are lots of fun. A few days together at a lux hotel getting the full spa treatment gives you time together and allows you both to relax without having to worry about doing up dishes later.

I also like surprise boxes.. lots of little nic-niks all wrapped up and put into a box. She dips her hand in and pulls out her presents. Gag gifts from Spencers work great for that sort of gift, they are fun and I do love the gift of laughter.

(Example.. my almost 17 year old grandson is getting the pink bunny suit from A Christmas Story this year. He is gonna LOVE it. lol)

A nice bottle of wine, scented candles, lovely bath soaps or salts, CDs or money towards a large purchase are all things i'd give my mom for a special occasion or holiday.

My mom pretty much has everything she wants as well. Last year I bought her a Keurig so this year I'm buying her a gift basket that includes some pods.

My sisters are the same as my mom so I'm buying one of them movie tickets in a gift basket with popcorn and movie stuff.

The other one is getting a basket with a bottle of wine and some renaissancey time stuff since her and her boyfriend go to the faires all the time and buy wine.

My daughter is getting a dinner gift certificate and movie tickets as well since her boyfriend said that's what she wants.

So basically buy her things that she likes to do, foods she likes to eat, baskets filled with stuff she likes that normally she would only buy to indulge herself. Does she like going to a spa? Is there something she wants to do but has never taken the time for? Does she like to read? Books....a kindle....Does she have a lot of physical photos from before computers? Make a nice photo album for her or scan them all onto a disc.

I gave my 78 year old mother a cordless drill last Xmas. She loves it - she does DIY jobs all over her house, now. But not everyone's mother is like mine.

Meh!!

It's just a normal day for us and always has been in our family.

The best xmas prezzie I gave my mum (when she was alive) was to help her in the kitchen - helping with the preparations and helping to clear up afterwards so she had more time for herself.

Time is the one thing money can't buy [;)]

One year i got a picture of my mothers mother, taken on the day she turned 16 and put her hair up for the first time. I had a photographer reproduce it and had it framed. My mother burst into tears!

She took me down to my aunts house - her sister - and i gave her sister the same thing - with the same result. I was in a car with two crying women. Hehe.

It wasn't desperately expensive and they loved the pictures.

You could do the same thing with fathers, mothers, siblings , grands, honeymoons, weddings etc etc etc.

How old is she?

If she's over 40, I'd say the best gift to give her would be spending time with her and family togetherness. But I can't truly answer for you, since I'm only able to tell from my point of view and experience. My mother, at her age, appreciates when we take time out and spend it with her than any gift we would likely buy.

Of course, my dad still buys her jewelry. It's just his thing.

How about doing a photo book by Snapfish or one of the other companies. Even if she's seen all the photos, making a "theme" book (i.e. "Mom's hairstyles through the years) could be fun. I have the same issue with my mom getting gifts - she's got all the clothes and "stuff" she'll ever need and she doesn't need more. I also do gift cards etc....she likes to go out to eat, or for manicures and stuff.

If your mother wants for nothing, yet you still wish to let her know you're thinking about her, why not a donation, in her name, to a great charitable or conservation organization?

Here are two such organizations:

Heifer, International www.heifer.org is the first that comes to mind. For very, very little expense, you can help a family survive, thrive, then pass on the gift of bees, chicks, a goat, a cow, etc.

I know they do great stuff, and I've supported them in the past.

I like to get her things she won't splurge on for herself like her favorite candy or the perfume she actually likes but never wears because it's expensive. I also did up a birthstone necklace for her one Mother's Day. Had my sister's stones on one side, mine on the other, and met with her stone at the tip of the v. She loves it and wears it all the time. Updated pictures too. My mom LOVES them.

I gave Mom an extra bottle of wild honeysuckle perfume that I had on the dresser. She loved it!

Now if I can get more Passion perfume, I would be happy.

It seems like a lot of people this year are going the more personal route in making gifts even the most simplest....a photo album, little toys that they remember from their childhood, a basket with little goodies, stuff they can make on their own that they know the person will cherish.

For my daughter this year I've decided to make wood and velvet box that will hold her dad's military medals. I feel she's finally mature enough to have them. I've always had the medals but they were never neatly organized. They just sat in a box. I feel this will be something sentimental for her. I'm not sure it's something she will feel the same about but I'm hoping she will.

I try to hand make her something special every year.

The biggest hit I've had in recent years was a gift certificate for a sushi-making class. Your mileage might vary on what is available, and what sort of specialty food she might be interested in learning.

Other than that, I don't go far wrong getting her something sparkly, that comes in a little velvet lined box.
