ORIGINAL: Salinedion Golden Corral? People need to accept that you really can't have a pile of meat and shrimp for ten bucks and not have it be swill. That salad bar is pretty poisonous too. Volunteer? If you aint been helping all year long, you'll likely feel a bit like a 5th wheel. The Wall Street Journal has done some funny articles about this. Some places now charge to let you volunteer. To anyone who has had a profoundly moving moment lovingly dishing out cranberry sauce to some meekly grateful "It's a Wonderful Life"-quality hobo, I apologize in advance. Honestly, they want a check a lot more than they want you. When I did it way back when, the volunteers were 6 deep. They urged me to go chat it up with a crack head milling around and I did, but did I ever desire to bond with a glass pipe type before or ever again afterwards? No, I did not. And my fellow volunteers were all ghastly, hangdog, NPR, smiling through the tears types. Super-downer, never again. 90/10 man/woman ratio too. Why tell yourself this maudlin tale of being left out of the Norman Rockwell painting? You are free, most likely by choice. Your life is fluid and subject to change. If you were on a yacht, would you even notice the day passing by? I vote for Chinese food, preferably a takeaway, abetted by a couple films and a little net surfing. No biggie. And at least they'll be glad to see you at the Chinese restaurant. While it may be true that many places will have an overabundance of volunteers at this time of year (and we have many places in New York, where even at other times of the year you have to sign up to volunteer, just so they can control the number of volunteers), I think it is not necessary to dissuade someone from trying to volunteer. It looks like you personally don't enjoy volunteering your time in a situation such as you describe. It doesn't mean others would feel the same about the experience. And your reasons for volunteering (or more accurately, not volunteering) strike me as very odd. The nature of the other volunteers? The male/female ratio? The sad aspects of being surrounded by the poor? Are you talking about going to a bar/club/party or volunteering at a soup kitchen, because I'm a bit confused.
