Oh My, Alone at Thanksgiving,

I so do not want to go to Golden Corral again. My Local Golden Corral is right next to Ft.Jackson. The US Army's #1 base for recruitment, basic training and Retirement.

So you know how bad the crowd is gonna be.

when i was away from family at thanksgiving in college, i went to a four seasons hotel and they served a pretty good dinner. the prices weren't terrible -- $30 for entree and sides, dessert included. are there any decent hotel chains in the area? that may be a good option.

I hear you. Thanksgiving without family ain't fun. I used to hate it.

I have friends who don't always travel to see the family on Thanksgiving so there is usually 5 to 10 people I know who are all alone for the day so we get together and cook a big meal and enjoy each other's company. Personally those have been some of my favorite Thanksgivings.

eh, it wasn't so bad. thanksgivings in my family range from heartwarming to disastrous, depending on who's invited and how many people are drinking heavily. personally, i don't mind the occasional friends-giving or doing something solo.

but don't mind me, i'm a weirdo :P

I'm sure there are a few shelters that could use a helping hand in feeding the homeless.
It's a truly humbling experience, and a reminder of all you have to be thankful for.

One year, I was in New Zealand for work over Thanksgiving (which happened also to be my 35th birthday that year). I had a nice dinner at the hotel restaurant, but it was a tad lonely.

I wonder if any churches or community groups near you might have celebrations you can join.

I've spent a great many holidays, anniversaries, and birthdays deployed or on temporary duty somewhere else. My family was always fabulous about celebrating holidays on different dates. It's not the date that matters, it's the celebration.

Message your friends and family. Let them know you miss them and want to celebrate when time permits. I'm pretty confident they'll be all for it.

I think I would see what type of soup kitchens/community groups  are serving that day and volunteer.  The comraderie is great and it's a very uplifting way to spend the day in many ways.  You truly do realize what you have to be thankful for.

As poise said, it is a humbling experience and you will walk away feeling as tho you came away with way more than you gave :)

I'm the lone survivor of my immediate family for many years. The holidays are what I make of them. I have a close friend who also lost her parents and brother all within a short period of time. We've made a tradition of meeting in NYC on Thanksgiving at our favorite Polish restaurant for a meal and to celebrate our friendship and all the good that is in our lives.

Golden Corral? People need to accept that you really can't have a pile of meat and shrimp for ten bucks and not have it be swill. That salad bar is pretty poisonous too.

Volunteer? If you aint been helping all year long, you'll likely feel a bit like a 5th wheel. The Wall Street Journal has done some funny articles about this. Some places now charge to let you volunteer. To anyone who has had a profoundly moving moment lovingly dishing out cranberry sauce to some meekly grateful "It's a Wonderful Life"-quality hobo, I apologize in advance. Honestly, they want a check a lot more than they want you.

When I did it way back when, the volunteers were 6 deep. They urged me to go chat it up with a crack head milling around and I did, but did I ever desire to bond with a glass pipe type before or ever again afterwards? No, I did not. And my fellow volunteers were all ghastly, hangdog, NPR, smiling through the tears types. Super-downer, never again. 90/10 man/woman ratio too.

Why tell yourself this maudlin tale of being left out of the Norman Rockwell painting? You are free, most likely by choice. Your life is fluid and subject to change. If you were on a yacht, would you even notice the day passing by?

I vote for Chinese food, preferably a takeaway, abetted by a couple films and a little net surfing. No biggie.

And at least they'll be glad to see you at the Chinese restaurant.

I'm with poise on the volunteering thing. It certainly isn't time wasted and will probably be something that you will remember for the rest of your days.

Quite often, there are a number of folks in any kink community who are also on their own for the holiday. Even if it's just three or four other people from your local munch group, that's more than enough to do a potluck between you. We've done that a couple of years ourselves when we knew there were people who are going to be on their own.

Since moving to CA, I've always been the house where friends who weren't going home could come for dinner. We've even volunteered to be dinner hosts to Marines who are stationed far from home.

Dinner is at 2pm.  Come on over.

I have lived away from my family for over 12 years now.  Why can't you cook your own little feast and invite a buddy over?  Do any of the people you work with know that you will be alone and would like an invite?  Check your local grocery stores, many of them have box kits and some even cook it for you.  Can you set up a video chat on Skype and eat your dinner with your family electronically?  Can you hiking/fishing/beach/ some outdoor activity?

Use your imagination and come up with a plan for yourself.

......And out of curiosity, why does military people + Golden Coral = hell?

How berserk can they go over by the baco bit tub at the fixin's bar?

I occasionally end up in some ass end of nowhere place with an army base on biz and they seem fine to me. Is it like in some old black and white war movie where they start fights over nothing due to their lusty and brawling nature?

Who do you expect to see eating at the Golden Coral? Paris Hilton dining with Philip Roth?

I have adopted family I spend as many holidays as possible with. Chinese, movie & friends is good. My city has charity fun run early in the day...20000 people that don't care you're dressed like a turkey & did embarassing things to your dog is fun!!

Beats trying not to club great nieces & nephews like baby seals because mommy decided to teach them the word spinster. Better is not having to detox from days of alcohol, valium or both to be around people i dont like. Friends are the family you choose to be with.

Just do a good steak with all the trimmings at home, and then go out to a movie or something.

I spent a Thanksgiving in boot camp. I can barely imagine how awful it would have been if a family had not extended that kindness to me. Thank you so much.

Did that for years after the divorce....took me a while to get over my issues of eating alone, but...the turkey was always good.

(Tip well).

This year, Mom's explaining to me how to cook turkey (like I give a shit as long as she's cooking...."yeah...exactly....wow Mom...that's awesome!!!! Tell me again?????....is it ready?????")
