That's doable. I think you should go for it.

Maine Coons will rough up dogs, and tree bobcats. Two possible options: front-declawing and/or neutering.

I doubt either or both of those will work...those are some TOUGH cats.

Daniel Pinkwater wrote an awesome essay about his first Maine Coon...I forget which book it's in. But it seems he did a podcast on the topic, too: http://www.pinkwater.com/podcast/podcast.php?showid=33

I just think it's much harder to train them once they gotten used to going outside. My friends who brought outside cats..in.... had a LOT of behavior problems that drove them to let them back outside. (marking)

I'm not saying it's easy, not with every cat. Most cats are highly routine oriented. If they're used to going outside, they will not be happy when they're denied that. Cats are also intelligent and persistent. It takes time for them to accept a change to their routine, hence why being firm and consistent is so important. Some cats adapt to it more quickly than others.

Marking is a difficult behavior to deal with once a cat has made a habit of it, but I don't think it's likely to come up with a cat that's already living indoors part of the time. It's most likely to happen with an intact tom that's been outdoors for years or in a house that has too many cats/lots of intact toms/not enough or dirty litterboxes. I've adopted two intact toms that were outdoors for years and had them promptly neutered, then dropped them into a house with other cats and lots of clean litterboxes...no issues spraying, ever. I've had some issues with clawing/marking with the scent pads in their paws, though, but putting up a variety of scratching surfaces and being vigilant with a squirt bottle fixed the scratch-marking issues.

A couple of words of caution about allowing a cat outdoors under supervision. First, any kind of time outdoors can strengthen the resolve of a cat that really wants to go out when you're trying to teach it that it can't. It can make the problem of him begging incessantly or trying to sneak out even worse. I've personally found that it's best just to keep them inside totally so that the begging behaviors will die off (unless you have some kind of totally enclosed run you can let the cat into when it asks to go out). Second, even if going outside supervised doesn't interfere with extinguishing the begging to go out (which from what Lookie has described, I don't think would be the case with his cat), be aware that cat bodies are not like dog bodies. A cat can get out of a harness in the blink of an eye and be halfway down the block before you even realize what's going on. I used to try that with the first cat I ever had (the one who was an escape artist). He would come up with all kinds of clever ways to get out of any contraption I could think of to take him outside under supervision. I also realized after just a couple of months that it was making him even crazier to go outside. I wouldn't try it with a cat like Lookie's Maine Coon; I think it would probably make the problem worse, at least early on. Maybe after a good long while has passed and the cat has accepted being indoors, although taking him outside on a leash after he's learned to stop begging could very well make the crazy behaviors resurface.

Not all of them, descrite-- some maine coons actually get along great with dogs. One of my maine coons lived in a foster care house with dogs and he used to play with them all the time. There are some really fun youtube videos that show maine coons playing with dogs.

I don't believe declawing is necessary although I fully support neutering (regardless of breed). Maine Coons are known as the gentle giants for a reason--they are a playful, fun breed--I've never known a maine coon to be vicious. playful biting is a part of their nature, and declawing actually makes them more prone to bite.

I think it really depends on the cat. I was astonished by my neighbor who took her cat for a walk every day. There was another lady on my block who had a cat and a small dog....and both of them walked with her daily ---no leash! it was the most bizarre thing I'd ever seen.

My cats are content indoors-- and I have no reason to screw that up.

Sorry, Haus, good point-- meant to say "can" instead of "will"....I know of at least one Maine Coon that was highly protective of "his" Basset hound. And the cat let that dog walk all over him.

Mainly because the stupid dog had trouble controlling his own feet.

But same said cat would kick the ass of any dog stupid enough to act aggressive toward the cat. Including some four times its size.

Definitely! It depends on the cat. Some cats are well behaved on a leash, though that seems to work out best when the cat has been raised to accept being on a leash from the time it was just a few weeks old. I had one of my dogs at the vet a few weeks ago and was surprised to see a couple there with their two cats on leashes, calmly standing in the lobby. Their body language indicated they were on alert, but not fearful or overly stressed. The cats even walked right up to my dog and sniffed her! Those were two exceptionally well socialized and well trained cats. The people said they had been taking them out on leash since they were kittens.

JJ,

As noted, maine coon cats must hunt. They are a very high-energy, high-prey drive cat. The constant nagging to be let out is really him begging for some activity. If you don't do this, already, supply him with toys that simulate the hunt and use those toys in interactive play. After about an hour of play, each day, if need be, broken into smaller time segments, you will have a satisfied cat and flesh less gound-meaty.

The "fishing lure" type toy (with a long handle for the human, a line and a toy at the end of the line) is ideal for this type of play. Giving him about an hour of play time per day should work out his muscles and stimulate his mind. Please, keep in mind, anything with string or cord should be put up and away from his reach, when you cannot supervise. Cats will swallow strings, etc., rather than spit them out. I remember quite a few unfortunate cats in surgery for removal of strings, shoelaces, leather cords, etc., when I worked in veterinary hospitals.

QR

This works. My maine coon is quite calm and content if played with for a while every day. If not...

Also I take her for walks on a small dog harness and leash. It took a little effort to get her used to it but it does allow me to take her outside without her running off or killing half the neighborhood wildlife.

I've had a number of Norwegian Forest Cats (similar in many ways to Maine Coons). Only one of them has been desperate to be outside (the giant fluffy white one, of course). Fortunately he's easy to retrieve when he darts out, since as soon as he hits grass, he rolls in delight.

A departed one (the biggest, naturally) was utterly petrified of outside, and if he did by chance get out, he would usually break down and start sobbing and screaming within 15' of the door. He also would tattle on other kitties when they were being bad, even coming and getting me if he saw another cat being naughty.

Try playing hard before bed, to keep the middle of the night interruptions down. If all else fails, lock the cat out of the bedroom, or up...

I have a neighbor who must be in his 80's and every single night he has this dog that he walks and it must be as old as the man. It looks blind in one eye and can barely walk. Some nights the man puts him in a stroller and walks him around.

But he also has this cat that walks right alongside him or right behind him, always follows the guy, knows when to move off the road and on to the sidewalk. When the cat gets a little slow keeping up because it's a pretty old cat also, the guy gives a little special whistle and the cat speeds up a little faster to catch up with him. When Master and I are sitting out on the curb it's just so strange to watch. Neither the dog or cat get distracted by people, never run or stop to look at something or even make a single sound. This guy has these pets trained better than children! I just feel so sorry for the dog. It looks like it's soooo old hobbling along.

That was, indeed, wonderful.

Look at the SIZE of that cat!

Yeah, I gotta ask, OP-- why not lock it out of the bedroom? Make your hand less feasible to munch on.

Great video haus...I have never seen a house cat that big!

My second cat I got just after I got married. He was a very young barn kitten that a gal had taken in, and quickly developed allergies to. He was a fabulous kitten. We lived in an upper level apartment at the time, and every once in a while we would look up and there he was, climbing up the patio screen door. We very shortly moved into a townhouse, and allowed him out on a harness and leash. He loved the outdoors. He became quite the little escape artist. We had three hallways that converged at the front doors, so you never knew where he was coming from.

At some point, he decided that jumping up onto the shower bar was a fun thing to do. At Mom's place it was okay, as it was actually a glass door, nice and stable at the top. One day he tried it at home with a shower bar. He jumped, it rolled, he fell and hit his head on the tub. He was never the same after that. His whole personality changed.

As we moved into a new house with an 18 month old baby, the escape attempts were renewed with a passion. It got to the point that when he did get out, I quite chasing him and said f*** it. He always came back. The last straw though, was the day he attacked my son. He was taken to the vet's and destroyed that day. I have always felt badly at how I did that, acting out of so much fear and anger. I made a phone call a few days later, and managed a private cremation with ashes returned. He had been a good friend. I blame it all on the head injury.

The girl we have now has always been an indoor cat with us since we adopted her and her brother at 8 weeks. She is 5 1/2 now and suffering from kidney failure. On a warm day she loves a little fresh air, strolling out the front door and flopping down on the warm concrete.

I'm sorry about your kitty--hope her last days are good days.

My two boys are "half-size" maine coons since they are a mix--and they are easiest larger than most small to medium dogs and larger than all non-maine coons. 15 and 18 lbs.

Maine Coons are not only the biggest cat but also have the biggest personalities. My Ruby, never, ceases to amaze me on a daily basis with her shenanigans.

I can't say she tries to eat me during the night but I do fall victim to random acts of violence: scritch, scritch, grind the cheek against hand, CHOMP! or there's always the hardcore spanking by her big paw (it makes a 'thud' noise) I get if I piss her off or when I brush her.

I'm lucky enough that Ruby has been indoors since birth so has no desire to go outside. In fact, it's very scary out there and even screen doors to "out there" must be met with great caution. However, this is the same cat also afraid of pumpkins and enviro-shopping bags.

My best suggestion might be something like Feliway diffusers - they emit cat pheromones to help with problem behaviours and stress.

One of my favorite things about Abby, my Maine Coon, is she has an entire language of sounds, not just meows and purring. It mostly seems to be about my cruel refusal to feed her what ever she wants at any time of the day or night. Although she does come and tells me all about when she kills the roomba, flips it over, so I know when it needs rescuing from her.
