What other guns, in whose hands, could you possibly be referring to that would have any bearing on our policies in the Middle East? I'm not the only one on this thread who interpreted your statement as referring to the military. If your comment is some comment about the Second Amendment, that's all well and good, but that isn't what I was referring to in my original comment about the religious right. Again, as I read it, this post is about LIBYA, and that's what I'm talking about. I was making a comparison between the religious right both here, in Libya, and in the rest of the world to say that moderates everywhere need to unite. Again, the post is about Libyan support for America from moderate Libyans. If you have some discussion you want to make about gun ownership in America, please feel free to start your own thread. Not sure what that has to do with moderates supporting the U.S. in Libya, but, hey, whatever. Again, be well.

When we're talking about militias in Libya, that stuff just isn't relevant. And frankly, I'm not sure it's ever all that relevant - the only times I can think of that anybody's rights in this country were secured at the point of a gun, it was the Army or National Guard holding the gun. I do think people should be allowed to own guns, but I don't pretend that a bunch of middle-aged homeowners with shotguns and rifles are going to be any deterrent if the most powerful military in the world decides to turn tyrant. And they're certainly not going to be any help in securing our embassy in Libya.

Most Arab/Muslim nations have long and painful memories of Western colonialism. The door is now open, which hasn't been the case in the past. It will take a lot of careful listening and dialogue on both sides before any talk of alliance is justified. And we need to remember that the door can be slammed closed at any stage if either side puts a foot wrong.
