I was really not impressed that they don't
have a successor spaceplane...

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orion_(Constellation_program)
The new vehicle isn't just a step backward IMO
It's a leap...
They went from a vehicle that could glide and
land on a runway to a re-entry capsule!
They had those in I Dream of Genie for crying
out loud.

Would be nice is some other country would step up and take the slack for it...I mean we're gonna burn out this planet eventually, wouldn't be a good idea to find another to destroy before we do that...Sorry I've been watching too much Stargate Atlantis

Well Canada has been spending funds all over the place for useless reasons...maybe someone will buy a clue and do something neat for once, like establish a few space vehicles. That would be cool.

A sad end to a fantastic idea space travel truly is stepping backwards, but who to step up to the plate next- China ?

And what happened to HOTOL ?

As to think about it HOTOL or a derivative is the next logical step forward as it uses it's own engines to take off from the horizontal, obtain space, deliver then land again under it's own engines, engines that are jet in air and convert to rocket in space, then back again.

Actually the private spaceship companies seem close to making it to the ISS.

Endeavor arrived at Edwards Air Force Base, early this afternoon. It turns out that I was able to get close enough for a decent snapshot.

Spaceplanes are too problematic. Unless it's small enough to be launched on top of a rocket, they are inherently unsafe (the re-entry shield is exposed to damage). They are less weight efficient than capsules. There is no powered abort mechanism. Etc...

Until a plane is designed with an engine efficient enough to propel it into space under its own power (without a rocket to get it there), capsules are superior.

I saw it at about 11:45 am from my balcony flying over the ocean. It was about 3/4 miles away but it was very clear and very neat to see! I waited till they said it was near where I am on the TV station and bam....there it was!

HOTOL was designed to be that in the early 1980's, but now I understand the project has been picked up again under the name SKYLON
