Romney on Good Morning America said that middle class families have an income of up to $250,000 a year. This guy is completely out of it. It is a matter of definition. NY Times argues around this question: http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/14/defining-middle-class/ It is interesting about half of Americans consider themselves being middle class. Medan income at the same time is order of magnitude less (and falling fast) compared to the Romney description.

Let me get this straight... President Obama thinks any family with an income of 250K or more deserve tax increases because they're not paying their fair share. Romney says the middle class ends at 250K and anything above that is upper class. Now JanahX seems to have a problem with Romney's statement, but gave Obama a pass for using the same dollar amount. Who is out of touch here?

Now, it does depend on where you live - places like NYC or DC or LA do have both higher wages and much high cost-of-living than, say, Detroit, so what constitutes "middle class" is going to be different. But $1 million/year is very solidly upper-class anywhere in the world, and in a lot of spots in the US $60,000 is upper-middle. I'd say a middle class household income is more like $30,000 - $100,000 in most areas, and somewhat more in expensive areas. I think if you're making more than $150,000 anywhere, you're at least on the low end of upper-class.

If they're spending their business' $1m income on rent, payroll, R&D etc - then they're "only" earning a half million a year, not a million. Which is still a crazy amount of money. If you can afford a penthouse and a housekeeper and private school for your kids, you're not middle class.

So the line dividing middle and upper class is the same with both, yet it's different? Obama said those making MORE than 250K, Romney said 250K is middle class... Defining Middle Class In a discussion on “Good Morning America” about his tax plan, Mitt Romney suggested the cutoff for middle income was for households earning “$200,000 to $250,000 and less.” President Obama has used a similar threshold in talking about extending tax cuts for the middle class. To be clear, both politicians appear to be talking about the ceiling for the middle class, not its midpoint. Yeah, my fucked up mind grasps the concept of topics. Obama isn't calling $250,000 middle class. It's a tax demarcation line. In fact, he's not defining the middle class at all in that statement. Romney, on the other hand, isn't talking about taxes at all in that statement. He's defining--rather erroneously--what income constitutes "middle class." It goes beyond "out of touch." This guy wants to "fix" an economy about which he's clueless.

That is a remarkable 2.79% of all the returns in 2009. How is "Middle Class" being defined?!?
