dcnovice -> Ever Like the Movie Better Than the Book? (9/8/2012 7:38:59 PM)

We've all heard, and perhaps said, it: "Oh, the book was so much better than the movie!" But are there times when filmmakers actually tell an author's story better than s/he did? I can think of three examples: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: My least favorite of my beloved Harry Potter books, it seemed clunky and talky--until Alfonso CuarĂ³n worked his magic on it. The Joy-Luck Club: I enjoyed the book, to be sure, but it had a certain reserve that the movie broke through, to the point that I cried--a rarity for me. Fried Green Tomatoes: It's heresy in my tribe to ay this, but I found the movie more engaging, and I confess I liked the addition of the Bates-Tandy subplot. Any others come to mind?
