So do you think little kids lemonade stand should be illegal?
Do you think cops should scream at the tots to shut it down?
well it is, and they did.

There are hundreds of ridiculous intrusions into people lives and they are throwing people in jail just like they did before the revolution, in fact this is exactly what the revolution was fought over and why the kings head was chopped off in 1200.

How many of these candidates are taling about REAL american issues which is the corrupt beyond recognition GUBAFIA.

SpaceSpank -> RE: Everything Is Illegal In America - SHOCKING VIDEO ! (9/7/2012 5:40:40 PM)

He would have had a stronger message if he hadn't thrown drugs and prostitution into it. They are their own separate fights.

But yes, there is certainly an issue with vague laws that make any number of actions questionably illegal. All it takes is some precedence to make something move from legal to "probably illegal".

The lemonade stand is a good example. Although there are certainly points that could be made. Should a kid under 18 be required to fill out months worth of paperwork for a wooden stand on their front yard using their garden hose, a handful of lemons, and some sweetener? No, they shouldn't.

But should an adult setting up a stand for their own use (not for kids to use) have more requirements? That's a maybe. They are adults, so would technically be required to record income from it.

The taxi thing has always been bullshit. I have no issues with the medallions themselves, it lets you know this probably isn't some lunatic who gave their car a taxi paint job. But they need to be available (and priced) as such to not force independent/new taxi drivers.

There are all sorts of nuances and one off situations that make it so these rules should be much more specific, and then leave reasonable leeway for fringe cases that are too numerous/unpredictable to try and compensate for.
But that isn't good monetary sense of course!

I was only able to get through about 60 seconds before the horrid editing job started to spell "ruined Friday night". Sorry reached my bear-ability threshold. I did my best, really I did.

well when its against the law in america for children to enjoy a koolaid or lemonaid stand and cops come at them screaming to tear it down that is sort of a tough pill to swallow.

So I understand. Maybe when you are in a stronger state of mind and you are able to get past the editing to get to the message you may want to come back to it since the message is so important if this country is to be anything but completely destroyed.

Then again maybe I suppose its always possible that the message and the now extreme over the top levels of corruption people have allowed this country degenerate to is just too difficult for you to bear in which case I would not want to see you hurt yourself.

SpaceSpank -> RE: Everything Is Illegal In America - SHOCKING VIDEO ! (9/7/2012 10:44:20 PM)

It's not even the corruption per se.

One of the big issues is being INSANELY politically correct. Better not offend anyone in the slightest or lawsuit time!
It's gotten to the point where nothing is their own fault anymore because it's always someone else. No one need to be accountable when it's so easy for it to be the other person's problem. Many of the laws and regulations follow this course of action.

The lemonade stand is a perfect example. They don't know how it was brewed or prepared, what ingredients, etc.

"Back in the day" as they say, no one would even bat an eyelash at it. You think the kids are up to no good? You don't buy from them, maybe go have a stern talking to with their parents/guardians. Point is you would take responsibility for your own self and deal with the situation.

Now? Can't talk to the kids, maybe you're a pedo, or you're trespassing, or you're just crazy. Talk to the parents? Trespassing, maybe sexual harassment or assault. People are often so terrified of the consequences of confrontation (or just confrontation itself) they just call the cops to settle everything, or the local housing board, etc. They get someone else to take care of the issue.

This happens enough times, it's easy to start getting laws passed. "It's for the good of the community/nation/people!" After all, those kids could be reusing cups, pissing in the jar, whatever! So some law, ordinance, something... gets passed that can be enforced if they want/need to, much like jaywalking.

Granted, this probably wasn't started over lemonade, it was probably something a lot more serious that provoked a knee jerk reaction/outrage somewhere. So it got rushed through poorly worded/defined and can now apply to some kids with a lemonade stand on their own lawn.

~FR~

First they came for the lemonade stands, but I remained silent because I didn't have a lemonade stand. Then they came for the farmer's markets, but I remained silent because I didn't go to the farmer's market. Then they came for the garage sales, but I remained silent because I didn't have garage sales....[sm=bury.gif]

So you put some bad conspiracy material up and that gives you license to insult people?
That is the weakest card in ANY deck.
Shame one you.
Now, we've got you piss poor behavior behind us, do you have anything good on UFOs? I really like GOOD UFO stuff.

SpaceSpank -> RE: Everything Is Illegal In America - SHOCKING VIDEO ! (9/8/2012 9:18:55 AM)

It's not really even conspiracy. More of a "look how fucked up it is when it's so easy to make something so innocuous illegal".

It just goes off the rails at a couple points talking about a few things that are blatantly illegal here (drugs and prostitution). It would have been a much more effective message if it kept to things like the lemonade stand and the incompetent land dispute stories.

It's a fluff piece. In RI for the longest time, Prostitution behind closed doors was basically legal behind closed doors. It got yanked when a lot of Politician's wives became activists.

But back to the topic. It's pretty much accepted that Fox tries routinely to reel in conspiracy theorists and John Stossel = 60 Minutes Reject. Any guy who can make his "journalistic technique" the focus of a personal injury law blog is a real special case -> http://www.newyorkpersonalinjuryattorneyblog.com/2010/07/john-stossel-hypocrisy-again.html

Baroana -> RE: Everything Is Illegal In America - SHOCKING VIDEO ! (9/8/2012 10:20:53 AM)

I so didn't want to step in this muck, but I have to agree with that small group of folks (i.e. the rational world) who criticize Stossel every time he goes on one of his anarchist rants.

Let's take just the one example of a kid's lemonade stand. It's not as innocuous as it may appear at first glance. Even in this case of cute, disarming little kids, poster faces for libertarianism or whatnot, are you sure they should go about their business unregulated?

There's no health inspection, so you have no idea how that lemonade was prepared. Did they use sanitary conditions? Did they use a dirty or contaminated surface to slice those lemons? Did they take an unwashed knife that mom had just used to debone raw chicken? Did they wash that pitcher? Did the dog lick the stirring spoon? How long has the lemonade been sitting out? Hell, they could have spit in it for all you know.

I'll leave it there.

SpaceSpank -> RE: Everything Is Illegal In America - SHOCKING VIDEO ! (9/8/2012 10:25:37 AM)

Of course it's a fluff piece. But it's a subject that doesn't get much "real" media attention unless it's attached to some big outrage. It's just the kind of story that isn't run often with much fanfare because they tend to happen with such disparate situations and in so many different parts of the county. One lemonade stand closed down in Podunk Iowa isn't news on its own, but it would be if it was a national campaign to shut them all down.
Since these situations are all small in scale, they get overlooked. It's just when taken as a whole they show a trend of poorly worded/defined laws and regulations being used to enforce things they were almost certainly never meant to enforce.

It would be nice if it was a more fleshed out piece of journalism, but it's still got some validity.

It is not against the law in America. It is not Federal Law, is it? Make up your mind. You want local government or no government at all? You want local government you're gonna get a plethora of laws and regs. Suck it up. Stossel is making a good buck off his libertarianism.

A bogus issue, this.

I'm fine going with Baroana's read on this. The kids were probably blowing their noses  into the stuff and someone called the Dept of Health. Or maybe some Tea Party turd down the street turned them in cause his frozen lemonade was losing business. If someone calls the Dept of Health, they can't say "Oh it's just kids" they are obligated to investigate any complaint which sounds like a health law violation.
I don't see any  Novus ordo seclorum here. Sorry.
