MercTech -> Just to stir the fat pot... (8/26/2012 11:49:15 AM)

I couldn't resist turning things around, advocate the devil, stirring the pot.... an alternate paradigm..

Don't you get sick of looking at all those selfish self indulgent skinny squibs out there. All the self aggrandizing gym memberships and wasting so much time and money on vain body image while we real person majority buckle down and actually get things done instead of spending all of our time on ourselves.

Standing back to duck the flying fur... <grin>

Baroana -> RE: Just to stir the fat pot... (8/26/2012 12:00:02 PM)

Yeah....though I try to do both as best I can.

outhere69 -> RE: Just to stir the fat pot... (8/26/2012 12:37:20 PM)

Heh heh heh. Reminds me of those guys who spend 3 hours a day at the gym, all of it in front of the mirrors where they see who can grunt the loudest.

pfft pretty soon I'm gonna (sort of) be one of those squibs!
But, I am also one to get things done. I am dying to get back to working on my houses! There is nothing more theraputic IMO than spending a day fixing something or painting the entire inside of an empty house with no noise except the music I put on my phone.
I'm probably going to <hate> gym time. Exercize in general to me is deplorable. But I need to do it, put my head to the grindstone and make time for me to be healthy. I have spent way too many years using the things I couldn't do anything about as an excuse NOT to take care of myself...now I'm fixing that.
I think I am going to start really really mellow and maybe do a yoga class or something at the local YMCA. I'm for sure not gonna go nuts and do like pilates or aerobics...uugh I remember my mother doing those types of classes when I was younger and the women she made friends with...christ on a stick I don't wonder why she drinks LOL

ok...I'm rambeling now :P

I've been fat, I've been thin, I've been curvy, thin, fat, thin, curvy, fat, heavy.
Never seemed to matter one way or the other.
If people cannot see beyond their own image.. and by that I mean vanity, they never will see another person as anything but a shell.

Baroana -> RE: Just to stir the fat pot... (8/26/2012 12:54:21 PM)

Vain people piss me off!!!

tj444 -> RE: Just to stir the fat pot... (8/26/2012 1:52:54 PM)

dude.. if you were one of the "people getting things done" then you wouldnt have a profile & be posting here.. you would be too busy getting things done.. [8|] [:D]

personally, I am gonna build one of these and kill 2 birds with one stone.. [:D]

sunshinemiss -> RE: Just to stir the fat pot... (8/26/2012 4:16:05 PM)

Sometimes vanity is insecurity in a tux.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Just to stir the fat pot... (8/26/2012 4:18:15 PM)

I wasn't vain until my hair started thinning.[&o]

TNDommeK -> RE: Just to stir the fat pot... (8/26/2012 4:20:37 PM)

Heeeeeeeeey! I work out to try to get rid of this body fat I have. And Hubs says I am the most conceited person when it comes to my hair.
But I ain't so bad!!

ARIES83 -> RE: Just to stir the fat pot... (8/26/2012 4:35:05 PM)

I thought he was saying that working out
at the gym instead of doing productive
manual labour is selfish and indulgent...

Some people I know who are Tradesmen,
go to the gym before work and then do
12 hours of HEAVY work...
(and are also on roids
but thats another topic...)

You don't get the body by sitting at a desk
so....

I'm one of those self-aggrandizing gym membership people. I spend an average of about 5 hours a week at the gym.
My gym isn't really that expensive though, only $35 a month. Also, I'm not doing it out of vanity. I'm doing it because my fitness levels have deteriorated to the point where I'm having a harder and harder time to actually get things done in general. Going to the gym gives me energy I haven't had in a while.

Also, I've found that I find powerlifting and weightlifting to be both enjoyable and relaxing.

They're idiots.

The human digestive system isn't capable to take up protein in fast enough and sufficient quantity to sustain a 3 hour a day weight lifting regime.
Also, we build muscle not while exercising, but while resting. A 7 day a week, 3 hour a day weight lift schedule does not allow the muscles the down time they need to actually recover and grow. Muscle mass and strength grow by damaging the muscle and repairing it a little bigger than it was before in anticipation of preventing future repeat damage.

Without sufficient protein to match every exercise done, and without sufficient rest time to repair the damage caused by weightlifting, the body will start canniballize itself in an attempt to keep up, growth and progress with stagnate, and injuries will become inevitable eventually.

Mirrors, btw, are absolutely crucial for weightlifting, as keeping the right form is important both to maximize growth, as well as to prevent injuries. Without a mirror, checking your own form is nearly impossible to do. When you see the beefy guys intently looking at themselves in the mirror while lifting, they're checking for form, not checking themselves out.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Just to stir the fat pot... (8/26/2012 5:33:23 PM)

Five hours a week is hardly excessive.

UllrsIshtar -> RE: Just to stir the fat pot... (8/26/2012 5:40:46 PM)

I wouldn't think so, no.

I'd actually do a lot more than that if I could. Considering that I'm basically a housewife, I've got the time to do so, without it getting in the way with my "getting stuff done".
It's just that my body isn't capable of keeping up with a work schedule more rigorous than that. I simple cannot process enough protein to handle the muscle growth at a faster rate than I currently am, and I'm a female. The protein intake demands on a male on the same schedule would be even higher.

Unless you're an endurance trainer, or keeping strictly to cardio/aerobics exercise (both of which shouldn't be combined with an active weight lift schedule designed to gain muscles, because the body can't both train for endurance and muscle mass/strength at the same time in an efficient manner), or taking steroids, you should never train 3 hours a day. Doing more than 5-7 hours a week of weightlifting, with taking at least 2 days a week off, is completely counter-productive. The average person's body can't keep up with weight training that fast.

Yer I've seen a lot of methods but the one
that gets results for me is doing progressive
sets, ( might be a proper term for it i duno
I'm not an expert)

I do as much weight as I can so I can only
get a handful of reps out, then have a 30 sec
to 1min rest and try again until I cant do any
then I drop the weight till I can do a handful
of reps again and continue like that till I get
bored or am at the bar.
It takes awhile to recover from that so for me
with work I only have to go to the gym twice
a week.

Like I said I'm not an expert, I just do what
feels right for me.
I don't do a special diet or anything.

LOL - Actually, that's not all that far from the truth for me. Things could be falling to shit around me and my thought will be to either grab a glass of wine or jump on the elliptical. That's because I find I have a clearer head and more energy(from exercise, not the wine) to handle things, not because I'm vain and avoiding things that need to get done. If nothing else, exercising helps me get things done.

(Though that really doesn't explain all the dishes in my sink, the unfolded clothes, or the pants that are still a bit tighter than I want them to be. But hey - at least my head is clear.)

That's about what I'm doing right now, though I build up more slowly to a heavy weight set.

I do a 12 rep warm-up set at about 50% max weight every time I touch a muscle group I haven't touched that day.

From there I go to a 12 rep set at 75%.
6-10 rep set of 90%.
2-4 rep set of 95%.
And finally, 1 rep at 100%.

Between sets I rest about 30sec to a minute. Basically, long enough to catch my breath. I also circulate which muscle group I work on at any given day, so that every muscle I though has at least a 3 day rest period before I touch it again. I try to go at least 4 days a week, and no more than 5.

I've been on this schedule for about 8 weeks now, tough I've had some lapses due to life getting in the way, and I haven't lost a single pound (which pleases me immensely because it means my protein intake is high enough to keep up) but lost or gained up to a inch, in all the right places.

I'm trying to go from 5'10" at 170lbs to 5'10" at 175lbs, while converting 30lbs of fat to about 35lbs of lean muscle mass, which would have me looking something like like this:

I've actually got her picture hanging up to keep me motivated. [:D]

My next goal after that is to start endurance training again. First for a marathon, but my ultimate goal is to be able to complete an Iron Man. I used to be an endurance swimmer when I was younger. I actually competed on a European level for a while, and I miss the energy and vitality my body had back then.

It's good to be fit, and better to be happy.

Do what feels right. If you're happy working out, and it picks up your self-image, then by all means. As long as you're sensible about it, you'll be ok.
