FR
1988 Al Gore was pretty much a conservative southern democrat.
He was amongst other things anti choice in
those days not something garden variety
liberals espouse. I imagine any dabbling
Phelps did was with the conservative wing
of the democratic party not the liberal
or even moderate wings. There is a difference.
Just like a Rockefeller republican is
different from a neocon or a teabagger.

I've never fully understood why the
Phelps were free from public nuiscance
laws since they are protesting at private
funerals. For it to be construed as a protest
against the military or the government
seems a bit of a stretch.

In other words, you cant show anything but you cant stand being called on bullshit.

I'll clue you in. If you dont like being called on bullshit, dont post bullshit.

If you post bullshit and get called on it, don't whine.

Nosathro -> RE: News regarding Westboro Baptist Church (8/4/2012 7:04:02 AM)

This group comes to Comic Con to protest gays and just about everything else, they are attention seekers nothing more. A Sheriff had the right idea, they were in town to protest the burial of a Veteran, so the day before the funeral, he arrested all of them. This is perfectly legal, you can be detained up to 72 hours, after that you have to be charged or released. If I were the Sheriff, I would have forgotten where I put the key.[:D]

I'm no expert on constitutional law... but this does seem like an infringement of free speech.

That's not the American way.

Now this.... this is the way to do it.. Patriot Riders - Fucking Awesome

Gore was a blue-dog democrat.Still plenty of them in our party.....it is truly....a big tent.

But no one let that creep in.......

Only someone as out of touch and and as screwed up as phelps could claim phelps was/is a democrat.Sounds like a guilty conscience has got someone acting defensive and shit......[;)]

Who would have know back then that Al Gore would one day be the the GOPs whipping boy, for being a tree-hugging climate-change leader and the very symbol of the ultra liberal......[:D]

Thaz -> RE: News regarding Westboro Baptist Church (8/4/2012 7:38:02 AM)

Boggles my mind that the man behind this was also a respected civil rights lawyer

Although there were signs the rot was setting in when he sued over Ronnies apointment of an ambassador to the Vatican he was still doing this untill the late 80's....but by 91....

DaddySatyr -> RE: News regarding Westboro Baptist Church (8/4/2012 8:28:02 AM)

It's easy (but not easy) to put these people out of business. It could be done but good people would have to be willing to go to jail and pay some pretty substantial fines (and become unemployable, thanks to laws added in the last 45 years).

Any speech that incites violence can be excluded from 1st amendment protection. Counter protestors need to decide on a phrase or three that will be their "go words" and every time these Westboro idiots use those words, attack them.

As I said; it would take some time and some cash and some sacrifice but if people are that bent on helping the government to take away our rights, that's the way.

Personally, I prefer the counter protests that seem to be pretty effective.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Another link for you Hillwilliam.  Now if you have evidence that the hate which made them famous also altered their outlook on proper size and role of government and business, feel free to bring it up.  But you don't.  You've got nothing but hurt feelings.  Too bad.

True. And the Westboro folks are in a demented league of their own. The word "fruitcakes" came to mind, but I actually like that much-dissed dessert.

Moonhead -> RE: News regarding Westboro Baptist Church (8/4/2012 2:04:26 PM)

How about "blue waffle" as a diss instead, then?

Thaz -> RE: News regarding Westboro Baptist Church (8/4/2012 11:16:27 PM)

I wonder if someone should grab the man behind all of this and stick him through an MRI. Seriously. Respected but somewhat obsessive civil rights lawyer to alleged child beater and hate monger in 5 years? Thats a pretty extreme change...

From your link

As a lawyer, Phelps was good in court
In an out-of-court settlement, Johnson received $19,500 from the school board in U.S. District Court late in 1978
• In August 1979, Phelps filed a class-action lawsuit on behalf of Carla Michelle Miller,
• After police and sheriff's deputies raided the Jordan-Patterson American Legion Post, 811 S.E. 15th, on June 28, 1979, Phelps filed suit, representing several clients.

In 1987, Phelps received an award from the Bonner Springs branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for his "undauntedness" and his "steely determination for justice during his tenure as a civil rights attorney."

.

Now, lets look at his more recent stuff from your link..

"And on Jan. 11, 1993, a fax, sent out under the Westboro Baptist Church heading labels a local black lawyer as an "INCOMPETENT BLACK WHORE" and "BLACK TRASH."

A fax dated May 22, 1992, called a black politician a "BLACK THUG," a "CRIMINAL" and a "HOLLIGAN"."

Is the above the mind of a liberal?

There is nothing in your link indicating Phelps IS a liberal Dem. The title of the article should have given you a clue. "The Wayback Machine"
As for his suits he filed, that proves nothing more than he was a money grubbing lawyer.

Please read stuff before you post it.

Actually as pointed out by a Supreme Court Justice, they are free to to say want they want, just away from a funeral. Something like, yes you have free speech but it does not give you the right to yell "Fire" in a crowded theather.

Oh the irony.  Had you been taking your own advice, Hillwilliam, and reading the thread, you would be aware that I was quoting Thaz, who provided that link, and all your caterwauling and foot stomping still doesn't offer anything to show the leopard changed spots.  We already know that WBC will say or do any extreme thing to draw attention to their beliefs about homosexuality, and to express their hatred for any who might disagree with them.

defiantbadgirl -> RE: News regarding Westboro Baptist Church (8/5/2012 10:50:12 AM)

I'm wondering why these assholes are still around. Poor Gabriel Giffords was shot, innocent people in a movie theater were shot, yet nobody that has decided to go on a killing spree has targeted what is probably the most hated church in the US.

TheHeretic -> RE: News regarding Westboro Baptist Church (8/5/2012 10:54:52 AM)

Easy.  Decent people don't decide to go on killing sprees, and it is decent people who are repulsed by WBC.

Once again sloooooowly. You made a claim. You supplied yet another link (what is it, the 5th or 6th?). Your link doesnt support your original claim that "Fred Phelps IS a liberal Democrat"
You are now posting links that show you are full of shit and whining when you get called on it. [sm=lol.gif]
