OsideGirl -> News regarding Westboro Baptist Church (8/3/2012 1:40:24 PM)

From Huffington Post. I wonder if they'll be able to make it stick.

quote:

Westboro Baptist Church protesters will soon be severely limited in their ability to disrupt military funerals, after Congress passed a sweeping veterans bill this week that includes restrictions on such demonstrations.

According to "The Honoring America’s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act of 2012," which is now headed to President Barack Obama's desk, demonstrators will no longer be allowed to picket military funerals two hours before or after a service. The bill also requires protestors to be at least 300 feet away from grieving family members.

This aspect of the legislation was introduced by Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), who, at the urging of a teenage constituent, proposed new limitations on military funeral demonstrations as a response to a 2011 Supreme Court case that ruled such actions were protected under the First Amendment.

In the wake of that decision, many have turned to counter-protest efforts to block Westboro Baptist Church's disruptive and insensitive displays, which frequently suggest that U.S. soldiers have been killed as God's vengeance for gay tolerance.

Thousands turned out in Missouri last month, forming a "human wall" around a church where the service for a fallen soldier was being held.

Earlier in July, hundreds of Texas A&M students showed up in a similar effort, joining together to create a barrier between Westboro Baptist Church members and a military funeral.

And while not at a specific service, a group of demonstrators dressed as zombies gathered at a military base in Washington last month, far outnumbering and overshadowing followers of the far-right congregation.

The bill also contains a variety of measures meant to address veterans health, benefits, housing and education. Obama is expected to sign to the legislation later this month.

I have a feeling that they will challenge it. I hope it sticks.

tazzygirl -> RE: News regarding Westboro Baptist Church (8/3/2012 1:45:02 PM)

I worry that making it a 'special case' may mean it gets over turned.

Moonhead -> RE: News regarding Westboro Baptist Church (8/3/2012 1:46:09 PM)

Weird how there's more emphasis on stopping a bunch of twats protesting than there is on trying to increase veterans' benefits in that article...

mnottertail -> RE: News regarding Westboro Baptist Church (8/3/2012 1:47:14 PM)

It amounts to a federal restraining order, don't it?  They are legal.

tazzygirl -> RE: News regarding Westboro Baptist Church (8/3/2012 1:48:31 PM)

All depends on how the SC views it.. and.. lets face it... at this time, that court is almost unreadable.

DarkSteven -> RE: News regarding Westboro Baptist Church (8/3/2012 1:55:52 PM)

If they're restricted, they'll find some new outrage to perpetrate.

This is flawed legislation and it will be overturned by the courts.
I would give them back what they play...sue the phoque out of them for any infringement.

Unless they've come up with some magical wording, I believe it violates the Constitution and will be over turned. I despise these people, but free speech is protected.

Owner59 -> RE: News regarding Westboro Baptist Church (8/3/2012 2:34:07 PM)

I support this bill.

It`s reasonable and respects everyone`s rights.

mnottertail -> RE: News regarding Westboro Baptist Church (8/3/2012 2:35:42 PM)

The fucking supreme court trip is gonna bankrupt them, and they ain't gonna get Shitfilet supporters to bail them outta that imbriglio.

The checkbook will have the effect of law on that one, and uncle sam got real deep pockets cuz he can borrow.

It is, but so are other rights.

If I follow you around all day screaming "Cunt! Cunt! Cunt! Cunt!" relentlessly, will you bow to my free speech rights, or will you call the police and have me arrested for harassment?

These scum bags aren't protesting government. I'd support their rights to protest there. But here they are infringing on the rights of private citizens at events on private property.

Fuck 'em. Not literally.

Ron, they've already been to the SC once. They have enough lemmings (I refuse to call em people) sending them money that they can go again.

Gee.  I wonder if Huff-n-Poo is as ignorant as so many others about the political leanings of this church, or deliberately lying about the reality.  They could just be in denial.  LOTS of that going around.

I like human walls.  I like a free media, freely deciding they will not give this group a nano-second, or column centimeter of coverage.

I'm not so sure I like Congress passing restrictions on free speech, no matter how noble the specific short-term goal they have in mind, but I'd like to know more about the language of the law, and how it will be applied.  As they so clearly illustrated with the phrase I snipped, Huff-n-Poo certainly isn't about to let facts get in the way of how they want to tell the story.

(For those who might have missed it on another thread recently, the founder of Westboro Baptist Church is an NAACP honored civil-rights attorney, who spent many years running in Democrat primaries for various nominations, and one of the sons of the founder was an Al Gore delegate at the 1988 Democrat convention.  Set aside their homophobia, and they would be classified as garden variety liberals, from the positions they take.)

Is or was? Wasn't he disbarred? The NAACP recognition came back in 1987 and honored his civil rights work. I have a hard time believing the NAACP would honor him today or has endorsed his antigay mania.

Every party has its crosses to bear.

A few thoughts:

--The homophobia--particularly its virulence and multifaceted outcroppings--is a pretty big set-aside, at least for me.

--I don't know a lot of garden-variety liberals who've denounced Barack Obama as the antichrist, enrolled at Bob Jones University, led an anti-Semitic protest at the Holocaust Museum, or rejoiced in the Chinese earthquake (and wished that the death toll had been higher).

--Why the quest to label Phelps as a "liberal" anyway? Every liberal I know (and plenty of folks of other stripes, for that matter) is repulsed by him.

"Set aside their homophobia and they wouldn't be what they are." That's like saying "this polar bear used to be a tiny ball of white fluff. Set aside its 1200 pounds of muscle, 3" long claws and razor sharp teeth and it would be a kitten"

Still claiming the Westboro bunch IS liberal Democrats eh? Remember that word you used "IS".

Did you see the little snip I had from the HuffnPoo article in the OP, DC?   One of my neighbors throws dogshit in my yard like that, I'm getting the shovel, and throwing it right back.  As close to the back door as I can manage.

I don't know anyone, of any stripe, who isn't repulsed by them.  I saw in the news that the KKK held a counter-protest to WBC (a good day to cross ones fingers for violent thunderstoms, and a tornado).

Yes.  The hate is one hell of a big set-aside.  It's their center.  Hate knows no party or ideology though, as will be clearly illustrated in here in the weeks ahead, I'm sure.  Take away the hate, as hard as that might be, and find something that marks them as coming from the right.

Hillwilliam seems to bouncing around a little, but I doubt he's even bothered to read the thread you linked to from the last discussion, and so has no idea how far he needs to go to offer a suggestion that their political philosophies have altered much.

I'm not bouncing, I'm quite linear. You seem to be the one tapdancing referring to primaries held over a decade ago.

I'm still waiting for evidence that Phelps IS a liberal as you claimed.

You are bouncing, Hillwilliam, like a maltipoo begging for attention.

Is.  Fuckin' A right, Bubba.  You sure didn't take the time to read about the cases the law firm was taking, when they let a good reporter get close a few years back.

Don't get boring.

Then show that they ARE now liberal democrats. All you're doing is posturing.

You got called on your bullshit. Either back it up or deal with the consequences and quit whining and trying for pitiful attacks.

I was willing to let it lie. NOOO, you had to bring it back up. You dont like being told you're full of shit, quit claiming bullshit.
