Marini -> Good News!!! Senate UNANIMOUSLY passes bill to help homeless vets! (7/28/2012 1:20:07 PM)

Okay, here is some wonderful news, that maybe BOTH sides of the aisle can be happy and proud to hear.

I am not sure if many are aware, but last year the number of homeless veterans was around 14%, out of all homeless people.

On July 19, The Senate UNANIMOUSLY passed a bill to reauthorize CRITICAL homeless veteran programs!!

Way to go!!!

The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans that is one government agency, that should be in the news front and center, for what they are doing.

From the link, I will post below, " On July 18, 2012, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed H.R. 1627, the “Honoring America’s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act of 2012!!!!"

I would encourage anyone interested in this topic, to look at this website and see what this government organization is doing to help veterans.

National Coalition for Homeless Veterans

Maybe, this is some news coming that everyone can feel happy about.

Whatever they're doing, it's not enough. Our Vet's put everything on the line in service to this country, the very least we can do as a nation is repay them with quality medical care, and good housing.

Yay for unanimous support on the bill.

(not going to grumble about my current issue with the VA.)

As a veteran, I'm cynically predicting that the reauthorization will die in the House, as the Tea Party Republicans there will consider it "excessive federal government spending" and somehow a violation of their pledge to Grover Norquist.

Good news. Ex servicemen and women dont get enough support here in the UK either.

It passed the House before it went to the Senate.

Um FD, look at the bill number it's HR 1627... Here's a clue, HR stands for House Resolution... That means it was written, and voted on in the House BEFORE going to the Senate for ratification.

Is it possible to give our veterans enough support?

Before you misunderstand, there is nothing too good for the men and women who put their ass on the line for this country.

I agree with you rob!!
We need to do MORE for veterans that are homeless and non-veterans that are homeless!!

Who says we can't learn anything around here?
I didn't know what the "HR" meant either.

Thanks rob!

We are doing a few things right here in the States, Lucy!
Can you believe that homelessness among vets is/was 14%?

What a damn shame.
I am also going to try to start posting, more good political news, though it's often harder to come across.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Good News!!! Senate UNANIMOUSLY passes bill to help homeless vets! (7/28/2012 9:59:44 PM)

While I have very little hope that any bill that comes out of Washington will really do anyone any good. This is, at least, an indication that their hearts might be in the right place.

It's good; if for no other reason than it's probably easier to seperate a pile of snowflakes than to get 100 senators to agree upon anything.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Treatment of UK servicemen is indeed woefull. I find it frankly amazing that so many young men and women continue to sign up and serve their country at great personal risk and all to often actual sacrifice for so little appreciation from the state especially over the last decade + of conflict. Although things do seem to be slightly improving in recent years.

There is no one "putting their ass on the line for this country" right now. We are not at war. Everyone serving is basically one less person on unemployment, and that's it.

To which I say, "Bring them ALL HOME NOW", if the choice is putting them at risk and paying them or paying them to sit home safe with their families, I know what "SUPPORTING" them really means.

How to balance the budget:

1) disband the army until we declare war and need to draft an army to fight it.

2) disband the air force. The navy and marines have their own planes and drones.

3) no more aircraft carriers. Drones get the job done, cost less, and have zero risk to the operator.

I'm not actualy sure if we're actualy at 'War' right now or not. Its not common to actualy declare War these days.
I find your comments about people not just being unemployed and then 'bring them home' confusing and conflicted. I will leave comments about the justfication or otherwise for NATO being where we are for another thread...it has little impact on the troops served and serving overseas in conflict zones who are following choices made by their elected officials however ill-advised or indeed criminal I may consider some of those recent choices.

1)Um. Drafted conscripts dont fight well, even in defense of the motherland and it takes quite a while to raise. And modern wars tend to be quite quick moving things, its the clear up and follow on operations that seem to be our weak point. If you wanted to argue for a homeland defense force and large well organised reserves for a defensive force...well its one aproach and one with merit.

2)The airforce is actualy the main homeland defensive force. The marines and navy are mainly about power projection which seems to be arguing against your intial point. You could certainly decrease the airforce and make large use of reserves if you aim was defense of the continental US.

3)Untill your drones get taken out by someone with some decent electronic warfare ...as as already happened to the US. Drones require total domination of the electronic warfare arena. Fine when you have it, very bad if you dont. Drones are an ideal tool for police actions/counter insurgency not so good for actual warfighting. Heavier use of drones for use at the pointy end is of course likely.

FR: would it be horribly cynical to suggest that this bill might not have garnered such unanimous non partisan support if it wasn't an election year?

Lucylastic -> RE: Good News!!! Senate UNANIMOUSLY passes bill to help homeless vets! (7/29/2012 5:55:00 AM)

You howwible howwible cynic.
They claimed Obamas words about other Vet problems were electioneering, cant see why it would be different for this.
