Old, though. We had a few client customers try this at our call centre. It freaked out one newbie, and a few played along.

Why people think this is better than a simple, "Please do not call again" and hanging up, I'll never know. Some telemarketers do actually follow the rules. The only exception I've ever personally seen to the DNC request is where politics are involved. If you get called with a survey it's because you're a registered voter, and those records are public. No one is going to call you back if you turn down a survey, though; it's not worth it.

I have yet to have the first request to "please remove me from your call list" work. I generally have to speak to a supervisor.

I prefer the "Yes I'm very interested, hold on a second and I'll be right back."

Then I lay the phone down and go watch TV.

Yes, political calls are excluded. I volunteered on a political campaign in FL a few years ago and my cell # is in robocall databases. I may have to change it for this election cycle. Now that I'm in MA, my FL area code confuses people.

https://telemarketing.donotcall.gov/faq/faqbusiness.aspx#who

Who May or May Not Call?

Who is covered by the National Do Not Call Registry?

The National Do Not Call Registry applies to any plan, program, or campaign to sell goods or services through interstate phone calls. This includes telemarketers who solicit consumers, often on behalf of third party sellers. It also includes sellers who provide, offer to provide, or arrange to provide goods or services to consumers in exchange for payment.

The National Do Not Call Registry does not limit calls by political organizations, charities, or telephone surveyors.

For more information, please see FTC INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTS below.

What about an established business relationship?

A telemarketer or seller may call a consumer with whom it has an established business relationship for up to 18 months after the consumer's last purchase, delivery, or payment - even if the consumer's number is on the National Do Not Call Registry. In addition, a company may call a consumer for up to three months after the consumer makes an inquiry or submits an application to the company. And if a consumer has given a company written permission, the company may call even if the consumer's number is on the National Do Not Call Registry.

One caveat: if a consumer asks a company not to call, the company may not call, even if there is an established business relationship. Indeed, a company may not call a consumer - regardless of whether the consumer's number is on the registry - if the consumer has asked to be put on the company's own do not call list.

I've never had a chance to do this.

If a telemarketer calls about a burial policy, I would let them go on with their spiel, then when they pause in the script for me to give an answer, I would wait just long enough to make the pause uncomfortable, then say, "We don't bury our dead."

Maybe you haven't been called by Canadians. I've been the caller and the supervisor, and while I didn't exactly set the bar I am generally very polite. I let people vent, and I respond nicely - it works better for everyone involved.

I did once steal this one from Carl Hurley.

I once let the marketer start his spiel and I interrupted him with "Ya know whut"...he said "What".

"Tomorra, I get ta ride in a police car and they're gonna buy me ice cream..............but first, I gotta show em where I put the body"

I'm with you. I can't recall ever having a problem when I've said "No thank you, and can you please remove me from your list?" Why would I need to be mean-spirited about it?

I also enjoy participating in the political surveys, so I get called fairly often for that reason.

Apparently you've never been a former subscriber of the Miami Herald or asked for information from certain colleges. The temptation to scream kicks in after the 3rd or 4th time you've been called after being asked to be removed.

Even though I'm on the "no call list" I still get calls from the same companies again and again.

You know what? I have to be honest and say that I rarely answer the phone if I don't know the number. So maybe they're actually calling me all the time.

I'm a lot friendlier (or snarkier-depending on your point of view) since I was one of those dinner time survey takers. If Scarborough research calls, try to finish the survey, since they will send cash (anywhere from 2.00 - 20.00 depending on the demographics) with a TV diary after the initial phone call. Hey, I hung on when a guy fetched a few beers. He was a nice, but ornery ol' coot.

However, if it's a call from an alarm company, "My husband's in the business, I'm quite happy with his service, thank you." I'm paranoid about telling an alarm or security company a blanket, no thanks.

I always get the ones that what to argue with me when I say "No thank you. Take me off the list".

I have a friend that used to:

Keep them on the phone and start talking softer and softer until he was sure that they had the volume on their head set turned way up......then he would bang the phone very loudly into the side of the fridge.

Being that I used to work as a telemarketer at one time when my daughter was first born and we were desperate for money, I feel differentlly about them. I keep in mind that they are simply doing their jobs, most are doung the job because it's all they can find right now and they don't like doing it any more than you do. So I try to be polite and nice and not once have I ever had a problem. Most end up laughing and smiling and even thanking me for being so kind.

These days though, unless I know the phone number I just don't answer. Even some numbers I do know I won't answer lol.
