Incidentally, public libraries are not limited to school children...

Yep. I know of a couple of folks who use the computers at them to fill out job apps, since there are few places that take actual paper applications nowadays.

Musicmystery -> RE: Book Burning Party at Library (6/21/2012 7:49:42 PM)

I hear they have books too.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Book Burning Party at Library (6/22/2012 7:09:36 AM)

The hell you say?

People don't often act "for" -- they react against. That's the Tea Party incarnate.
Not this time! Sheer genius!!!!

I'm horrified by their tactics.

Horror?

[:D]

There are many things going on in the country and in the world that deserve a horrified response.

A mock book burning party to draw the attention of lazy media consumers isn't among them.

Given what Fareheit 451 was about combined with the protestors using the books imagery transmitted to people via their flat-screen TVs, just. . . wow. It is almost creepy.

And now you know why people oppose closing public libraries.

Yes, the same people that want to live in the world of "1984" where 'Double Minus Bad" is better than "This is very bad and horrible".

midmichiganguy -> RE: Book Burning Party at Library (6/25/2012 4:20:44 AM)

I find the tactics they used to raise awareness very sick and perverted. No matter the positive outcome here for the library; the tactics were still wrong and sick. Whats next? Raise awareness for a small veterinarian clinic being closed by showing advertisements of aborted animals? Animals on fire? Puppies being drowned in a bag? Sick tactics by a sick populace looking to manipulate people for votes.

I'm seriously against blatant misinformation about the other sides position to drown out their argument and manipulate people.

kalikshama -> RE: Book Burning Party at Library (6/25/2012 9:59:27 AM)

I agree that the Tea Party's blatant manipulation was a bad thing.

http://boingboing.net/2012/06/16/award-winning-book-burning-hoa.html

Michigan's extreme austerity measures and collapsing economy had put the library under threat, and the town proposed a 0.7% tax raise to keep it open. The local Tea Party spent a large sum of money opposing the measure on the grounds that all taxes are bad, so the Burnett campaign reframed the issue by creating a hoax campaign to celebrate the library's closure with a Book Burning Party a few days after the vote.

The outrage generated by this campaign was sufficient to win the day for the library, as Troy's residents made the connection between closing libraries and burning books, focusing their minds on literacy and shared community, rather than taxation.

Troy Public Library would close for good unless voters approved a tax increase. With little money, six weeks until the election, facing a well organized anti-tax group who'd managed to get two previous library-saving tax increases to fail, we had to be bold. We posed as a clandestine group who urged people to vote to close the library so they could have a book burning party. Public outcry over the idea drowned out the anti-tax opposition and created a ground-swell of support for the library, which won by a landslide.

It would be truely curious and enlightening to see the Tea Party's 'Books'. Specifically, the accounting books of just HOW MUCH MONEY was spent opposing the whole thing. As this sum would be pitted against how much it would have cost them over a given time period. The end result is "Was the cost of opposing this.....MORE....than what they would have paid in direct taxes for the library?". Also, would be curious to see how much in taxes from various radio and print ads was collected from them. Wouldn't it be funny if they paid the same amount in taxes (or more)? In other words, for all their bitching and moaning, they failed to accomplish anything including paying less?

But this *IS* the Tea Party; the folks whom are against having to show their records, but demand everyone else "Show their papers"!

And now you're rehashing what happened on FB.

That's because it answers the question you're rehashing.

lol! you seem to have forgotten, i didn't ask a question, nor rehashing anything. i pointed out that you're probably wrong, that many voters, whether on FB or not, didn't see the updated story that it was a hoax. you then seem to have copied pasted in some links and a reply that didn't make any sense. And when you realized it, you forgot the original point :)

Musicmystery -> RE: Book Burning Party at Library (6/25/2012 7:15:05 PM)

Yeah. That must be it.

Sure.

Then what's your problem with this one? No one misrepresented anyone else--a group of people organized an event after the closing of the library. They didn't pretend to be anyone.

Fuck, man, they advertised they were hiring a band. Can anyone say "gullible"?

Perhaps you've missed the distinction between animate and inanimate.

I thought the "death panels" bullshit make this look tame. But thats my opinion only

And didn`t Sarah want to burn books?

Ohh....my bad....
