Even nuns are being slammed as radical feminists

American nuns struggled to respond Friday to a Vatican crackdown on what it calls “radical feminism” among the women and their purported failure to sufficiently condemn such issues as abortion and same-sex marriage.

Some nuns in the Leadership Conference of Women Religious characterized the disciplinary action announced Wednesday as an “ambush,” but others — including the leadership — said they couldn’t publicly comment on a system that mandates their obedience. The 1,500-member conference represents the vast majority of the country’s 57,000 nuns.“
People are stunned,” said Sister Pat McDermott, president of the 3,500-member Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, based in Silver Spring. “They’re outraged, angry, frustrated, they don’t know where this came from and how to hold it.”

But it simply cannot be true... there is no war on women.. according to the conservative mindset.

DarkSteven -> RE: Latest in the war on women (4/26/2012 9:12:41 PM)

"The Vatican report didn’t focus on public positions the women took but rather on the private conversations they had at their own meetings and comments they made in private letters to Vatican officials about such issues as how to minister to gays and lesbians."

Real classy, guys. Issue a public pronouncement disagreeing with private communications.

In other War on Women news, even after they're dead:

Egypt plans 'farewell intercourse law'

Egyptian husbands will soon be legally allowed to have sex with their dead wives - for up to six hours after their death. The controversial new law is part of a raft of measures being introduced by the Islamist-dominated parliament. It will also see the minimum age of marriage lowered to 14 and the ridding of women's rights of getting education and employment.

If this is the Arab Spring, I can't wait to see what Summer will bring.

Perhaps if the good nuns indulged in some child abuse they would benefit from some support from the Vatican. As we all know, the Church was an excellent long established track record in supporting pedophiles.

I can only shake my head and wonder what kind of morality inspires an organisation to protect child rapists while attacking nuns for promoting social justice. It simply beggars belief that this Church insists that its moral pronouncements be taken seriously by any one until it has undergone a very long very sincere and very public act of contrition for its past and ongoing crimes.

More like a war on dead woman......

Looks like they`re trying to play catch up with our fundie-woman-haters.......[:D]

I sometimes wonder if the so-called 'clash of the civilisations' - the confrontation between fundamentalist Islam and fundamentalist Christianity - is, at its core, a pissing contest over : "Our misogyny is better than your misogyny" or, perhaps, "Our misogyny is holier than your misogyny" .

More likely the reverse, from the looks of it.

It's amazing to me that you can get so worked up about people calling INDIVIDUAL practitioners of Islam murderers or talk about the SPECIFIC extremists who walk bombs into Israel without your flying into a a deal where you accuse them of encouraging religious and/or cultural persecution. And yet you have no problem using a WORSE generalization in the indictment of the religion of others.
I sometimes wonder if my periodic opposition to elements of your thinking is warranted. I doubt I'll have that feeling again in the future.

Are you fucking serious lady? With the unfounded SMEAR you just posted? Based on what a rumor you once heard about a nun beating a school boy?
Try that was 30 some odd years ago. But somehow you play a WEIRD game of connect the dots so you can have a pointy stick to retaliate K's post.
YEAH, you should be the one delineating these issues philosophically.

I might be concerned if I ever get to see any evidence of you thinking,

As you apparently regard my stating that the Catholic Church has "an excellent long established track record in supporting pedophiles" as a "smear", and not as as well established FACT that has been demonstrated to have happened on numerous occasions on at least 3 different continents, I won't be holding my breathe waiting for you to produce evidence of your capacity to think clearly about any issue with a religious or political context.

Indeed Stern, some "pissing contest" - sure these guys are all as bad as each other, right? Just like a thirteen year old Somalian girl stoned to death for the crime of being raped http://www.jihadwatch.org/2008/11/somali-girl-pleaded-for-mercy-before-being-stoned-her-to-death-for-being-raped.html - some entertainment for a crowd of 1000 onlookers.

...and in other news that for some strange reason never reaches the Islampohobic West http://www.worthynews.com/11367-ethnic-cleansing-of-christians-in-syria-50000-flee

quote:

Islamic militants with ties to terror group al-Qaida have launched the "ethnic cleansing of minority Christians" in Syria, forcing tens of thousands of people to flee the embattled Syrian city of Homs and other areas, aid workers confirmed Tuesday, March 27.

At least 90 percent of Christians living in Homs have fled after "fanatics" forced them to leave their homes, said Dutch aid group 'Kerk in Nood', or Church in Need.

It added that the exodus of 50,000 people mainly took place in the last six weeks. "They have fled to villages and in the mountains, sometimes as far as 50 kilometers from their homes. We have reports that Islamists 'cleansed' the Homs areas of Hamidiya en Bustan al-Diwan without giving them the opportunity to anything with them," the group told Worthy News in a statement.

I am going to say this again. There is just as much of this type of behavior in other religions. The problem with the Catholic Church is that they try to save face.

However, recent Vatican actions have supported the prosecution of priests accused of wrong doing. It has taken some years, but it is changing. And of course a priest pedophile is more news worthy than the sexual predator who has been repeatedly convicted, served his time and does it again.

Wow ... That's terrific ...

With regard to the rest of it ... I am talking about your use of apple and orange science to take whatever swipe you can at Christians.

You're just a bigot.

And when you can't stand on principal you try to make assertions they're stupid. Coming from someone who's developed the reputation you have here. That's an endorsement.
So... Thanks.

Yep... and I'll say one thing right now. I took myself and my family OUT of the local Catholic parish after having to have my second marriage consecrated by the church so my children could be baptized once they were born... not too long after the second one's baptism, I had a colleague wave a headline in my face about the very priest who was in my home and baptized one of my two children, who'd been picked up in an internet sting.
I felt compelled to write a lengthy letter to the diocese and withdrew.
However, I find it LAUGHABLE when who just resents christians grabs the straw, WITHOUT ANY STAKE, WITHOUT ANY INTEREST IN A RESOLUTION. Where I come from that's called bigotry.
And I think it is where you come from too.
That article is astonishingly horrid to see happening still in this century.
I hope the Islamic leaders step in a resolve that quickly. There seems to be so much concern about the behavior of catholics, I'll have to presume they're sending in the 'marines' on an ugly one like that.

Agreed, there is an awful lot to criticise the Church for but it should be proportionate rather than an effort to simply demonise because there are many well meaning decent people in that institution too.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like moderation and tolerance are becoming trends with the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia calling for the destruction of all churches in the Arabian Pennensula just a few weeks ago. Unfortunately it looks like those defending women's rights aren't much interested in the mistreatment of women in the Islamic world either http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2011/03/12/phyllis-chesler-turning-a-blind-eye-to-islams-brutal-treatment-of-women/

It's funny... in ALL the third party bitching and finger pointing ... Catholics THEMSELVES never get any credit for bringing the problems of THEIR OWN church to the forefront and making THEIR own clergy deal with the problems. Despite all the horseshit peddled, I think prosecution (though that too is to the credit of rank and file Catholics bring the issue into the public eye... and at considerable pain, I might add)... prosecution WASN'T what's started the ball rolling towards resolution. And despite everything that's said, it's pretty much always conveniently ignored that we're doing something about the problems in our religion.

You're right.

What's Tweak doing about this? Or is this just one more thing us 'idiots' in the west are 'making up'. I have a catholic Syrian friend who just spent his life savings getting the women and children out who would beg to differ... but what does he know? He's not way down under with his finger firmly on the pulse of 'truth'. [:D]

erieangel -> RE: Latest in the war on women (4/28/2012 3:13:20 PM)

As scandal-ridden as the Catholic has been in recent years, if I were to join a church, it would be a Catholic one, but I'm very ambivalent about organized religion.

I thought not reading everything was a peeve of yours. You obviously didn't get that I was talking about her building nuns into her attack on the vatican which was REALLY about the sexual conduct of priests.
You wanna make it a 'one size fists all' thing?
Cause that's the only way your one-worder has any legs.
