Marini -> Many school districts now serving: breakfast, lunch and dinner! (4/9/2012 9:46:44 PM)

I guess I am late finding this out, but I didn't realize many school districts are now serving; breakfast, lunch and dinner.

NPR: Schools in all 50 states, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner to hungry children

Funding for covering dinner, is being provided by the Federal Government's "Healthy and Hunger Free School Act"!
According to this article, there will be 21 million suppers served in schools by 2015, and 29 million by 2020.

For schools to be eligible to provide dinner, they need to live in a community in which 50% of the students, qualify for free/and or reduced lunches.

This is indeed a safety net, for many families!

It's been over 20 years now since I've been in school but even then, or at least where I grew up, they served breakfast if you got there early enough before classes and then lunch. Now we never had dinner though but the middle school and high school had a McDonalds in the cafeteria that stayed open after classes for those who were in sports, clubs, detention, etc...

I agree little wonder, they have been serving breakfast and lunch, for many years.

But, I had no idea, school systems in 50 states, were now serving dinner also!!

I remember before the Clinton reform of welfare, advocating something like this as part of any welfare reform to make sure that at least the kids wouldn't go hungry (might be cold, might not have shelter from rain, might have ratty clothing, but at least they could get 3 meals a day).
I think every school in the nation should offer 3 meals a day to kids who are sufficiently poor. I'm sure one of the resident right-wingers will come tell me I'm a bleeding heart liberal for it though...

The school lunch program goes back to the days of bi-partisanship, a Mondale/Dole project.

Today, there is no bi-partisanship, intentionally.

Yes and that is always a good thing.

Was there a reason you felt the need to throw this in? Is it really that hard to discuss something without acting like a political bigot?

I think it's a fair comment, given the oft-repeated attitudes and patterns toward spending money on programs.

Fuck it. Just open the school kitchen after school hours for all comers and eliminate food stamps. Hungry? Head over to the local school and get something to eat.

Those on the 'left' just love the idea of having the federal government feed our kids. Isn't that the responsibility of the parents ? Where does all of this end ? Maybe government housing for everyone ? That worked out so well in the past.

Well, it only took 3 more posts before it happened. He made that comment because some people are REALLY predictable.

Nailed that one Softbonds.

I find it amazing that anyone has a problem with children not going hungry. Aren't you one of those guys who are always decrying the evils of abortion? Guess you don't care so much about them once they aren't a fetus anymore. Once they are born,is it OK for them to starve in the streets?

I just said that it is the parents responsibility to feed their kids and not the government. How many of these poor families have a flat screen tv ? How many have expensive cell phones ? How many of these poor parents are smoking and or drinking ? It's called priorities. As long as someone else foots the bill, they don't have to.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Many school districts now serving: breakfast, lunch and dinner! (4/10/2012 7:37:33 AM)

How many are living in their cars?
Besides, it doesn't matter if the parents are spending every last dime on meth. The kids shouldn't suffer. Interesting that pro choice me cares more about children than you do. Ironic, really.

Apart from whingeing, what are you going to do about it? The current situation might not be a desirable thing by any standard but at least the kids are getting something to eat. Children have to be fed regardless of whatever ideology is fashionable at any given moment. Throwing your hands up in the air and complaining about irresponsible parents isn't going to feed one hungry child.

So, servant, how do you propose to solve this problem? What practical suggestions or ideas do you have? How do you propose to feed those kids? Or should we just let the kids go hungry?

I hope you aren't ashamed of it. Me? I'm proud to be a bleeding heart liberal.

I have to check out this school meals thing. I don't think my school district is serving evening meals yet but this school year they did start giving every student free breakfast and lunch. In the past, it had to be applied for and many students had to pay for their meals based on parents' incomes. But with more than half of our students living below the federal poverty line in my city, the school district to scrap the application and just give free meals to every student.

servantforuse -> RE: Many school districts now serving: breakfast, lunch and dinner! (4/10/2012 7:50:11 AM)

The first thing I would do is make sure there is some type of 'means' testing. If these kids really need the meals they should get them. There are millions out for the free handout that should be denied.

tweakabelle -> RE: Many school districts now serving: breakfast, lunch and dinner! (4/10/2012 8:04:13 AM)

That is at best a cop out. Besides it would probably cost more to implement and enforce than it saves. And it could take a long long time to implement. So I can't see that achieving much beyond punishing the poor. It could keep an small (and expensive) army of bureaucrats in work implementing and enforcing it ...... but I thought people like you actually opposed big government, especially when it intervenes in family life

So do you have any practical suggestions that might actually achieve something useful?

So it's ok by you if children starve to death if the parenst are too worthless to take care of them.

I knew you were a heartless SOB but really is there no limit?

As I explained above, my school district has ended the means testing and opted to give every public school child up to and including grade 12 free breakfast and lunch. You know what? They are feeding more kids, but saving money overall.

You tell us. In Florida, only 2% of welfare recipients tested positive for drug use.

Anecdotally, my brother receives SSDI and doesn't own any of these things.

While I believe people should practice Family Planning and not have children when they are not ready for them, which includes having substance abuse issues, I wouldn't want to see the children go hungry due to their parent's shortcomings.
