Some days a black guy just can't get a break. Say "no comment" and you get reamed for evading the question, answer it honestly, and get reamed for answering it.

Presidents should not comment on individual crimes or controversies. It is becoming more common for public figures to appear on shows like Letterman or comment on crimes that are still under investigation as this one. It is not professional.

This thread is quickly devolving into stupid personal attacks. Obama is not using this to score political points. Since his so-called political misstep of saying that the police were stupid to arrest and handcuff Henry Louis Gates, Jr., he has stayed out of the political fray when it comes to race. My guess is that he had nothing to gain by seemingly siding with Trayvon Martin's parents and family, seeing as how Florida has a large number of both black and Hispanic voters, as Zimmerman has attempted to portray himself.

This is an absolute travesty. A boy who had no criminal record, a solid academic record, and only Skittles and iced tea on his body after he was shot to death is a reason for an outcry. Anyone who wants to say that race is no longer a mitigating factor in this country is ignorant. I feel so sorry for his family.

However, I believe that the state of Florida is the demon here. Who passes a law that basically gives you the right to say, "I felt threatened for my life; therefore I killed another human being," and walk away scot free? That is disgusting. Every lawmaker who voted for that should be in jail for the murders committed in his/her name.

It gets worse - and it spreads:

Indiana's "Stand Your Ground vs. Police" Law signed by Governor

quote:

Although he said it was a "close call" that took days of consideration, Gov. Mitch Daniels signed into law a measure that gives Hoosiers the right to use force to resist police officers who illegally enter their homes.

The new law is a reversal from last year's controversial Indiana Supreme Court decision. Advocates called it an effort to protect against rogue police – although Daniels acknowledged that the law might create perception problems.

"In the real world, there will almost never be a situation in which these extremely narrow conditions are met. So as a matter of law, law enforcement officers will be better protected than before, not less so," Daniels said.

"What is troubling to law enforcement officers, and to me, is the chance that citizens hearing reports of change will misunderstand what the law says."

The new law gives Hoosiers the right to resist officers who they believe are acting unlawfully. Using deadly force against an officer is only protected to prevent serious bodily injury.

Groups such as the Fraternal Order of Police and other law enforcement organizations had lobbied against the measure. Rep. Linda Lawson, the No. 2-ranking House Democrat and a former police officer, said it will create "open season on law enforcement."

You live in Indiana. A police car pulls up in front of your house and a policeman gets out. You have no idea why he stepped onto your front lawn - you can't think of anything you may have done wrong - but he's there and now he's walking up to your front door, so he MUST be there unlawfully. You're scared - so you open the door - and empty both barrels of the .20 gauge shotgun you keep for home protection into his chest.

And the law your Governor just signed will prevent you from having to spend a day in jail...

How do the mods let you post such bullshit?

The Indiana law was written to protect innocent homeowners from illegal search and seizures, and from no knock invasions of your home. You can't just grab your shot gun and shoot a cop who steps on your lawn.

SNAKE OIL ALERT!

Hold up there Trigger, let's not jump off the deep end just because some members of the press have pre-judged this case, especially when there is no case yet. And lets not judge a law that has saved many innocent citizens in Florida just because the press has pre-judged the case. So let sanity prevail and lets inject some facts into the situation....

  • First, the law does not let one kill another without cause.
  • Second, the statistic below indicates lots of innocent people have been saved by this law.
  • Third, if you were one of those who defended themselves and/or their family members from an attack then you would not agree with the quick and ill advised judgement made by the Left and many here.

According to statistics from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, before the law was enacted in 2005, there were about 13 justified killings each year by citizens from 2000 to 2005. Between 2006 and 2010, the average has risen to 36 justified killings each year.

"Stand Your Ground" says you need only to "reasonably believe" using force is necessary to protect yourself from great harm or death.

Notice the key word "justified". This means the 36 cases would have resulted in innocents being harmed by criminals if they had hesitated to defend themselves without protection of this law. Thirty six. A lot. Could have been you and your family. So, it's important to have such a law because without it people were being killed because they were afraid to use deadly force to defend themselves or their families. That is the reason for the law and it was needed and still is.

To be sure, one must justify why they "reasonably believed" using force was necessary so it clearly is not a blank check to kill fellow citizens as it has been made out to be in the Snake Oil press.

Finally, let's be honest, attacks by criminals on innocent citizens occur daily and this law protects those innocents and so it is a Very Good Thing to have such a law and one cannot jump to the conclusion the law must be done away with because of this one situation which has not even been fully investigated but clearly it is not such a slam dunk or the man would be in jail already. So, don't railroad a possibly innocent man and don't railroad a good law that has save so many innnocents from criminals. Such a determination is made only on Snake Oil so far.

Yes, that is a lot. 36 "justifiable" homicides. That just means that after killing another human being, the killer claimed self defense and the cops and courts failed to take it any further. "Reasonable" is such a vague term. I heard on Keith Olbermann the other night that some of those incidents were road rage incidents and arguing neighbors. But, hey, if you want to take the numbers at face value go right ahead. It is what ALEC and the NRA is hoping people will do.

Just like the Florida law was written to protect you legally if you shoot someone who is attacking you with their bag of Skittles after you chased them - right?

More bullshit, typical from you. Show me where the laws say you can gun down a hoodie wearing, skittles carrying youth, or shoot a cop who knocks on your door.

Face it, you really suck at hyperbole.

I may be wrong, but I believe there is already a federal law that protects people from illegal search and seizures and no knock invasions.

As for Obama making a comment about this case--he was asked a question, he answered it in an eloquent way without commenting on the actual investigation.
