OK, seriously:

To me, it's a royal pain in the arse that there are half a zillion settings that need to be sorted out just to get something as simple as audio on a computer.

The first thing I'd do is try earphones or different speakers. Then, I'd download the Belarc Advisor. This will tell you what hardware your computer's using. From that, you can find out your sound card's driver.
