Status: offline 		I used to use my computer mainly for gaming and net browsing, however my son decided to use the dvd-drive as a stepladder a couple of years ago...it still opens occasionally... Now my monitor is randomly tinting everything blue and a lot of website's ads are slowing my net-browsing down something chronic...

This comp was top of the line 5 years ago lol, I'd be tempted by a laptop to replace it but that would only be so I could sit in bed and browse online

yeah I've had to switch off the automatic updates at work as they have a habit of automatically restarting the computer while I get a coffee

Status: offline 		The PC arms race has slowed down, market saturation in the late Nineties is what triggered the tech selloff, current sales are mostly topping off, new businesses, and users, students, etc., not mass upgrades of entire sectors of the economy like the mid to late Nineties, when Y2K paranoia was a major marketing point.

Social media, since it's a relatively new market, is driving sales and that means phones and now tablets.

Status: offline 		In the segment of population that was using PCs for very light tasks to begin with tablets will cut deep just as laptops and netbooks do. For serious work/gaming though it's going to be a long time before anything like a tablet will be sufficient.

Status: offline 		Although there is an iPad version of Resurrection. That was very nifty little synth emulator, and I'm a bit annoyed that they've yanked the mac version to concentrate on sticking it on the other things instead...

I agree with this, however... Here in Seoul, the hours people work are insane - 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. is a common work day for many many people.  As such, when they ride the bus or subway home, gobs of people are listening to music watching television on their tiny phones.

Status: offline 		The airline reservation system requires a large amount of memory. I've yet to find a laptop that runs well with the program on it. The airline reservation system won't run on MAC. So, PC it is for me.

I've had desktops, laptops and netbooks since 1980 so of course I had to check out the new tablet craze. The well-rated tablets were $200+ and it seemed they were just larger versions of smartphones, except you couldn't make calls with them (aside from skype), shove 'em in your pocket, or add much storage. By the time you add memory, trick 'em out with a keyboard and buy a sleeve and screen protector for them, you're at a really good netbook or laptop anyway...which I already had.

Instead, I went for a no-contract smartphone for $65 (I've seen them as low as $30 at Best Buy). They can do everything a tablet can for a fraction of the price so it was a cheap way to try out if I'd actually enjoy using a tablet. Turns out, not so much. For a power-typist like me, they're poopy (though the android talk to text is nice. I have that on my phone).

When I had to replace a Gateway all-in-one less than two years after I bought it, I cried uncle. I need to be able to run high-demand Pro Tools for music recording. Those are huge WAV files, and PT needs a lot of RAM to run well. Best bang for the buck was a new HP tower, to which I added the cannibalized hard drive from the all-in-one and hooked it up to the 32" TV. Done. And I expect it to last 10 years or more, which I don't think is going to happen with these ultra-cheaply-made dealios like tablets. If one component fails in a desktop, it is simple and inexpensive to replace or upgrade...unlike laptops, net books, all-in-ones. When one thing craps on them they are throwaways unless you are a tinkerer in this realm.

So...I love my workhorse desktop; it does what I need it to do. I love my netbook; it's nice for reading/websurfing in bed or while traveling when I'll need to type. I love my cheap smartphone; it's great for 3G while away from wifi, and it's wonderful to have all my music, pictures, convenient apps like tuner/metronome/internet radio/Overdrive/Kindle and an actual PHONE in something as small and light as a pack of cards.

I doubt I'll join the post-PC era anytime soon, but as long as the new toys are inexpensive and fun I'll probably keep using them all.

Status: offline 		I love my laptop and iphone. I got rid of my desktops that had been sitting in a room unused for 2 years, just this summer when I moved. I just couldn't see lugging around the clunkers that would just take up needed space. I had a laptop then also but it was dying so I bought a new one a few months ago. I like that I can go anywhere with it since I like to be able to go to the park with it and do my college work or at a coffeeshop if I want to. I can take it with me when I travel and it takes up very little room. I love my iphone because it has almost everything I need on it. I mean I could even use it as a remote control for my tv and a flashlight lol. If there's an app for it that can be useful to me then I probably have it on my phone. It's just sooo very convenient for me. I mean I can even read my textbooks online when I'm sitting on the bus.

I've looked into buying a tablet but I just can't see me having any use at all for it. It just seems like a gizmo or a toy to me and not very useful especially if you have a smart phone.

Status: offline 		 ubuntu has most every program that both mac and pc has, and files can be transfered from an ubuntu program to its corresponding mac or pc program without a problem and all of this is for free, seriously, i lived on ubuntu for years and did what everybody around me was doing but without spending hundreds of dollars on software

also, when it comes to the pc mac debate, i say old mac, because new mac fucking sucks, too much form over function, too much trying to act like a pc, too much taking the pc problems of form over function, it renders it way too stupid to use and ive really tried, hell even current ubuntu is terrible, but you can sign in with ubuntu classic, at least it lets you use the good version, im dissapointed in computers these days being more about how it looks to the point that it makes it hard to do more then one thing at a time

anyways, pc or mac or linux, i have to be able to do at least four things at once, and how tablets are set up you cant see more then one thing at a time, makes it next to useless to me, makes me sad

ok, that was my ranting, its probably incoherent but meh

oh, ps, windows 7 doesnt come with even a trial of word, you have to actualy buy it when you do upgrade, sorry lady hib

Ubuntu is nice and will do what 90% of people require, but anyone who uses their computer for something other than web/email/generic office apps will likely require a computer running Windows/Mac OS.

I have an iPad that I use daily. It's great for what it does but it's nowhere near as usable as a dedicated desktop machine and that's not going to change any time soon.

It is possible that they may become more than that in the future, but it's a ways off. The human machine interface is just not there.

People have mentioned data entry and writing, but not programming. Even if tablets got some really good voice to text programs there would be a hassle trying to write code. How would you input this: m_HelpFile=%ProgramDirectory% + "\\My Program\\HelpFile.CHM"

That's just a bit of pseudocode.

When you can actually write an application for a tablet on a tablet I might take an interest.

Shit, I miss DOS - if I needed an app, I could just whip one up in Turbo Pascal.

Java is more powerful, but commensurately more complicated than quick and dirty linear programming, without having to mess with a complicated GUI.

Status: offline 		Yes. My uncle (A computer whiz-bang) did everythin in DOS until they removed it in XP(?). I never understood someone having the newest computer with the latest version of windows and using DOS. He managed it well, though.
